I really like the idea of the picture because it's different from usual skateboarding shots. But the flash seems out of place and he is also a litte soft.

I would recommend cropping to get better composition and it will also get rid of some of the foreground clutter. I would also recommend some post processing, to really make this image sing :D

Well I used a fill flash action that can be found here (http://www.atncentral.com/download.htm) I also used some curves, CMYK skintone adjustment (http://www.smugmug.com/help/skin-tone) and some USM. It's sort of like a recipe of a dish that you have prepared for years. It is easy for you to make, but hard to write down to be able to explain to another cook. I really just use photo-editing tools to make the image look more pleasing to me.

A big issue we see with prints, is under exposure. Especially faces or skin. Also bad skintones. If you look at your original image, can you see where it looks like there is a veil over it? I mean it looks sort of grayish and flat. This isn't atypical. You have to use levels, curves, sharpening and sometimes actions like fill flash to add the "pop" to these type of photos.
