Playton, welcome to the forum! Unfortunately, the posted photo suffers from an understandable lack of detail - understandable in that 200 yards is WAY, WAY too far away to use a 200mm lens. Given the subject of a horse, I would not expect reasonable detail beyond 50 yards or so. So I think you need to get both closer to your subject and get a longer lens - from 200 yards away you'd need roughly an 800mm lens (on your aps-c camera) to get good/sharp images.

Please don't be discouraged. It's not a reflection on your ability only that the circumstance was beyond the abilities of the equipment.

2 is probably my favorite because of the detail of musculaturre in the horse. Great, sharp capture!

Thank's John they were some of the first shots i took with the 1D the Chatsworth shots were with 10D

Nice shots :) However as an egotistical yank I've got to point out that Burghley is just one of three of the most famous horse trials in the world. The other two being Badminton and Rolex Kentucky which together are the "Grand Slam of Eventing". Rolex offers a prize of $250,000 to any rider who wins all three in a row. The only person to have won that is Great Britain’s Pippa Funnell in 2003.

Love Andrew's confused look (first of the Chatsworth shots) and the angle of #4 makes it look like it should be at a beginner trial :)

I had a press pass for Rolex and I didn't realize until about midday that I could get a pretty cool shot of the jump around the corner over the heads of the crowd. :) Check out the no stirrup action too.

At first I was unhappy about the poor light here, but I kind like how it highlights the horses' and riders' faces, makes the competition seem more intense. (Or I'm full of crap and I'm just trying to make my self feel better? :scratch :thumb

I wanna see how a crop would look with the just the three horses on the right. What do you think?
