I'll need to use the 550EX flash next time. This is probably one area where IS would have helped.

Love the second, it's a house finch isn't it? Thanks Greaper. Yes, it is a house finch. I thought it was a purple finch, but fishwife corrected me. We apparently have purple finches here too, so I guess I'm going to have to keep an eye out for them.

I just love what that Canon 70-200/4 does to backgrounds (can I say Bokeh? :rofl) It's going to take some practice holding the lens still. I'm trying to use aperture priority and keep the shutter speed as high as possible.

Welll... OK... I gotta admit since I'm shooting with IS on my long lenses .. I don't have that great a reference. I'll turn it off next time to see how the "other half lives".
Just blowing smoke (figuratively speaking) .:D

:nod :nod That's almost impossible to do with my little G3, much to my annoyance.

Probably a western bluebird. They're in this area, but we've not seen any in the yard yet.

Love the pose as well as the contrast of the crisp subject and the blurry background. Nice shot.
Here's my first:
Our very own Sweet Pea - she must think the lens is edible.

Great bird shots. They say March. Did you really just take them or are they all time bests?

Great bird shots. They say March. Did you really just take them or are they all time bests?
They were shot in Bosque del Apache in New Mexico the second week in March 2004. They are also probably the some of the better shots of birds for me ( the second hawk frame I just converted from RAW this evening) I have better images of geese in flight but they will have to wait for now.
I have tried to get pictures of birds over the years with 35mm cameras - but with poor succcess. Too short of lenses and too much grain in film.
The 10D with its low noise and 1.6 mag factor is a great help. Also I bit the bullet and bought real IS glass for shooting birds for this trip 400mm DO and a 1.4 teleconvertor and a first rate tripod and ball head. The hawk shots were done from tripod - the road runner was hand held. The 10D just does an outstanding job. And good glass really helps.
Like Fish said - this digital photography can become an addiction. I held off for along time being willing to spend the money for L glass telephotos with IS, but there really is little else that will deliver like they will. Good tools always seem expensive when you buy them, but years later they will still work and you have forgotten the pain of paying for them. http://www.dgrin.com/images/icons/Laughing.gif Thanks for your kind words...

How in the world do you get such nice sharp images at 1/8th of a second handheld. You must be the most stable fellow around. You might have been a great sniper!http://www.dgrin.com/images/icons/Laughing.gif Lovely image - good shots of birds can be easy sometimes, but are usually more challenging than you would think. I just don't know how you can do it hand held like that. Great work.
