:dunno I'm new to the pro ranks on smug mug. I'm trying to lay out a simple site to sell action sports photos. I really like the look of moonriverphotography.com
but hve been totally confused by the instructions on how to make a slide show on the home page, for that matter how to add other pages, and also how to create separate categories or groups for pictures shot of different teams and different days. Anyone who can help? Thanks. You can see what I've started at www.fleetingmomentsonline.com

Hi, and welcome to Dgrin :wave

Did you grab the instructions from the slideshow thread? It's very basic, and please do give it a try. If you mess up, or need help, I can have one of our staff do it for you.

The pdf instructions are here:
http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=28348

Check our FAQ

For the navbar info - and there's a short tutorial that explains it fully

As to your other question, I sent you an email from our help desk:

Regarding organization, well, that's up to you :)

We have:

Homepage>Categories>Subcategories>Galleries

So, you could have,

Homepage>Basketball>Team A>individual game galleries
Homepage>Basketball>Team B>individual game galleries
Homepage>Parachuting>Skyteam>France jump
Homepage>Parachuting>High Fliers>Kansas City

Etc.

It's all explained here, have a read and ask any questions on organization, back here :)

Yep, that's what we're going to try to do for you. What I mean by a link to the gallery you want to use for your slideshow is, go to your site, find the gallery of photos that you want to show in the slideshow on your home page and let us know which gallery it is. You can either cut and paste the URL (internet address - top bar of your browser, i.e., http://www.) or just give us the name of the gallery and we can find it.

Look in your footer - it's this line:

slideshowUrl = "http://fleetingmomentsonline.smugmug.com/gallery/1953530";

ONLY change the red :D

Done. I added this to your CSS:

.homepage #galleriesBox {display: none;}
.loggedIn .homepage #galleriesBox {display: block;}

YOU will see it logged in (convenient). Log out to see it as visitors would. BEST YET - get a 2nd browser, we love the excellent Firefox Browser, it's free from www.mozilla.com

Have a look now, click the link in your navbar

http://www.fleetingmomentsonline.com/Galleries is your custom category called "Galleries"

Now associate galleries with that category and you're off to the races.

Category>Subcategory (if you wish) > Gallery

You can put all your baseball and football in Sports category, if you wish. Or you can have your galleries in the category called "Galleries" and link them from your navbar. Or you can have MORE or DIFFERENT links in your navbar. YOU decide.

Look here, please:
http://www.smugmug.com/help/upload-photo

and here:

Notice, the CATEGORY Sports, and the SUBcategory, also.

Read, and then think how you'll organize.

You can make yourself a couple new private galleries and link them to your navBar.
The layout of the galleries could be either html only or journal depending on what you want to do.
HTML only info here: http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=186127&postcount=19

To link to your navBar replace these lines of code:

<a href="http://fleetingmomentsonline">Information</a>
<a href="http://fleetingmomentsonline.com">About Me</a>

With these:
<a href="http://www.fleetingmomentsonline.com/gallery/xxxxxxx/">Information</a>
<a href="http://www.fleetingmomentsonline.com/gallery/xxxxxxx/">About Me</a>
Replace the red x's with your gallery id numbers.
Remember to backup all of your code in a text file prior to making changes.
Easier to recover from any mistakes..

I moved your navbar down a little and gave you a temporary header. You can change the text in the header section of your customization. You can have a banner, in lieu of text. How? Make one, and then follow the instructions in my FAQ:

No, but YOU can do it yourself :D

My FAQ:
http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=26043

HTML Only Page, #88. You simply copy and paste the HTML from the SmugMug shipping page to your gallery, being CAREFUL to follow the exact instructions in the FAQ. Holler if you need help, thanks.

OH and to see the HTML on the shipping page, you use your Browser's "view source" button. I also HIGHLY recommend you get Firefox, it's much much easier to do w/ firefox :D

I'm finding this pretty difficult. The html & css thing is very confusing. I can cut and paste anything but to get the results I want i'm not having great success. This is what i really need: a site with homepage slideshow and nav bar.

We've done this for you:
http://fleetingmomentsonline.smugmug.com/

navigate to the gallery page and then i'm not sure how to handle this, i will be covering many different games each weekend and posting pictures for the parents. i want it to be easy for them to find and purchase the photos. do i make separate galleries for every game? what do you think is the best way to handle it?
What we think is NOT important. It's what YOU think.
You can have your games organized by SPORT, or individually. You have to decide. Why not poke around, view some really well done sites and see what others have done. Re-read the categories page I've given you a few times, so you can understand better. Make a few dummy galleries on your site, and practice with the organizing. It will only be good if YOU do it, so that YOU understand how things work.

Some sites: http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/1801307
click the link under each photo to get to the site.

We all CAN AND WILL help you, but you've got to invest some time in understanding how organization works, and once you see how simple it is, you'll be able to decide how you want it.

Please also put your website name in your signature on Dgrin - see You! upper left corner. This is so people can easily and quickly find your site.

Jeff,

As we said in prior emails and in this thread :D you will see your galleries when LOGGED IN it's quite convenient. To see your site as a customer would, you must LOG OUT. Best, is to have two browsers going. We love the excellent Firefox Browser, free from www.mozilla.com - get it, and install it. You'll love it. Be logged in on one browser, logged out on the other :D

You only need the parts that are in between
<-start content->
and
<-end content->

I fixed it for you.

Now, put the
.gallery_XXXXX .nophotos {display: none;} part in your CSS :thumb

Also, make a new custom category. Call it "Site Stuff" and then associate that gallery with your "Site Stuff" category.

A couple of things I noticed was the "This is a brand new gallery with no photos." warning was showing up when viewing with Firefox.
Repair this line:
.gallery_2008361.nophotos { display: none;} to this .gallery_2008361 .nophotos { display: none;}

Now you have a navBar you could hide the breadcrumbs on this page like this:
.gallery_2008361 #breadcrumb { display: none;}

You can also remove the style picker by forcing viewing style to journal.

As I was replying I noticed your site got bOrked again.
Is this what you are looking for?

i replaced the code with the htmle from smugmugs shipping prices page and now it doesn't show the correct info. I just need th US shipping info.Okay, now i see what you are trying to do. I got access to the code throught a 'backdoor' and changed it. See what you think?
