View Full Version : I've been OOB'ing
I came across this yesterday by accident. OOB'ing ( Out Of Border Images ) has a rather large following and some of the stuff that people are producing is stunning..
Here's my 1st attempts, good fun and makes a nice change...

Hi there Mog..... yes this is something I'd like to learn to do too, did you follow a tutorial?? or did you work it out for yourself ??
I can see you could have heaps of fun with OOB'ing :clap

OOB-ing can be really effective and really beautiful. I've seen some images that take on a 3-d effect because of it.
I used it once on a large collage of soccer shots:

This looks great but i keep hitting a brick wall..can anyone please help.
I get to the bit where you drag the inside frame about & it then asks you to "select add layer mask icon" but mine are locked out from me ???
Its on the 10th page of instruction. :scratch
I'm guessing here but make sure you have applied the distort, press Enter...

I don't know what I'm doing wrong...
I've tried to do three of these. Everytime I get to the point where I have to move the shadow, nothing shows up. If I get rid of the eye for the main image, I can then see the gradient layer as well as the frame layer and the shadow layer, but the minute I put the eye back on the layer to view it, a solid color covers the area where I painted.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Make sure the shadow layer is in the correct position, should be 3rd up from tghe bottom, see the screenshot below, the shadow layer is layer 3.
You can move layers just by clicking on them and dragging them.

Wow... so many great OOB's. Thanks to those who offered help on why I wasn't able to create my OOB image correctly, it turned out that when I went to paint the mask layer to expose the gradient, I had clicked on the image instead of the mask, so I was actually painting over the image. DOH

Hi there :D the tutorial can be adapted to other programs, it's a matter of finding out if your program has work arounds or the same tools, just located in a different area of your drop down menus.
I just brought PhotoShop Elements 5 as well, I don't have mine yet either.
It can be pretty frustrating when you see things get posted on Dgrin that you wish you could do too... if only you had the right tools ... oh well .. :rolleyes

When you do the "contract" step and the tutorial states "enter 30", if you choose a higher pixel number you'll get a thicker frame. Likewise if you higher res. picture you'll need a bigger number to get the "normal" size frame. :)
I've got no clue about beval though :)

But if you look at his/her image, the bottom edge of the frame is larger than the top and sides... was wondering he they acheived that.

Thanks, I just messed arround with the "perspecitve" and "distort" tools under the free transform or modify or what ever the tool is. For the bevel I just used "blending options" on the frame layer and set it to "bevel and emboss."

I tried the technique for the first time last week. My first attempts didn't work for some reason, but I tried again a couple of days later, and I got it. Maybe I could have chosen better pictures, though. This is Sharlene the Emu, whom I'm doing a 30 Day Pet Portrait Challenge on.http://pug8.smugmug.com/gallery/1951422

Matthew, I love this picture. I live a few blocks from where the photo was taken and I know how hard it is to capture the tortoise and hare. The distractions in the background (trees, buildings, trash can, benches) make composition difficult and the amount of space between the two statues makes it almost impossible to use a shallow depth of field and get both animals in focus. You found a wonderful solution for capturing the light heartedness of the statues (even though the hare, appropriately, didn't quite make it)!! Kudos. :bow:clap

Fantastic OOB renditions folks!
Matt...nice water spillout! Love the look of the front left rider as he enters the OOB world! :D
Splatt...very nice work! The only thing I would suggest is to change the gradient so that the darker portion is in the lower left corner to provide more contrast to the snow spillout. I know you changed it from the first one but I would still go with more contrast to help show the snow better.

Thanx Serrator,
I owe it all to your great tutorials. They lay everything out as simply as possible. You may have lawsuit issues for beeing such an OOB enabler.
General questions or statements.
1. In your second tutorial you did some great shading on one of the curved frames. Could you explain how you got your results and maybe some tips on how to do it?
2. I figured that I was hooked on this after reading your tut's and put together a PS action to create and name all of the layers and masks in the proper order. This gives me a good starting point and might offer an even simpler tutorial for those that use know how to use actions. I will try to clean it up and post it for others to use if I get a chance.
3. Also, I have seen some neat 3-D type frames on some of these. (Have thickness and texture). If someone could explain or give tips on how to do it, that would be great!

Also you asked about adding thickness to the frame, this is easy...just make a duplicate of your frame layer. Change the color to a gray. Move this new layer below the main image layer and above the gradient layer. Move the new frame layer out as needed to create the illusion of thickness.

Skippy,
Thanks for your kind words and all! It is fun to see what others can do with their editing tools. I was hoping that the tuts would give some folks unfamiliar with editing the basics to try it out. I am always encouraged by others who take the technique and push the out of bound-aries...pun intended! :) I have seen some really nice work here and enjoy watching how beginners progress from the simple learning stages to the adventurous OOB masterpieces.
Here are a couple more OOB's that I have done.
This one is of a knight statue from the Art Museum located in St. Louis Missouri and I added a local castle looking building in the background:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/139/362167677_b2ce593936_b.jpg
This one is of a RC model jet (radio controlled), they came to our area and put on a big show of around 150 pilots with several hundred jets this last summer. These things fly at around 200mph and have real jet engines that are scaled down, this one here has around a 3 foot wingspan and costs around $20,000 dollars.

Wonderful OOB's guys! Keep 'em coming.
kwcrow,
You asked about shading...here is a quick mini tut I made that hopefully will help:
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=227887195&size=o
Also you asked about adding thickness to the frame, this is easy...just make a duplicate of your frame layer. Change the color to a gray. Move this new layer below the main image layer and above the gradient layer. Move the new frame layer out as needed to create the illusion of thickness.
Have fun.
Thanks again for even more help Serrator. You do some great tutorials. I agree that shading the frame can really help the realism of OOB's. I thought you might be using some tricks with a grey and white gradient or something. This is very helpfull and I like the idea of your daughter grabbing the frame and curling it, in your tutorial.

Basically I duplicate the Red Color Channel of the image (It has the most contrast with the blue water) and then use the levels command to create a mask from it by pulling the black and white and midtone markers in towards the middle and play with all three until I get the mask that I want. (not quite black and white but just so the foam is about the only thing that is not black then blacken in anything that you don't want showing through your gradient. I then select the image mask and do a load selection and choose the copy of the red channel that I made (you may have to do an inverse on this? I am away from photoshop and forget.) Anyway now you can just select a big paint brush and choose white and paint the selection. This will reveal only the water droplets from the image. For the Frame I do the same thing so that the foam or water is over the top of it. It makes what seems like an impossible mask very simple once you master the technique. If others are interested, I would possibly be willing to do a better tutorial with some images.

If you mean how these pictures are edited, then you most certainly do have the capability! This is my first post, too. Seems like a cool board. :thumb
Working on that basketball net was teeeedious. Had to manually redraw the left side of the net too, as there was a bright light behind it in the original photo that had drowned out that part of it completely. Final complaint: her arms and legs got the skinny treatment since she was blurred in the original. A sharper pic would've been better.
Edit: By the way, this is Natasha Howard, likely the #1 high school fresh(wo)man in the country. She's gonna be big, sho 'nuff.

-FotoPhocus, good job on the shading touchups. One more slight tip on that, try to shade only on one side of each protruding object such as the rhino's horn, only shade the lower area of the horn and not above the horn too. Try to match the lighting of the image and in the rhino's case the light is coming from the upper right it appears. Nice work though. Hope this makes sense...
-BlueHoseJacket, wow...using a touchpad, you are brave! Knowing that... you did extremely well on your OOB. Just consider adding some shading on the white frame under the car. Fun pic too!

Id love to see a tutorial on this. Thanks
Some of you were interested in how I created a mask to allow only the water splash and foam to show outside of my OOB frame. Here is an attempt at explaining it.
This is my original OOB.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/182/390911850_865a57f57c.jpg?v=0
Next we are going to click on the Channels Tab. (Assuming you are in RGB Mode) you should see an RGB combined Channel along with a Red, Green and Blue Channel.
If we compare these channels, we can see that the Red channel produces the most contrast between the white splash and foam of the water and the blue water itself. ( I will not go into detail of why this is so, other than Blue water contains little if no Red in it, therefore it is dark or black and white contains much red in it (as well as blue and green) therefore it is light. This is why we chose this particular channel to use as our mask.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/146/390911853_83e4825ce1.jpg?v=0
Red
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/166/390911847_6888c57948.jpg?v=0
Green
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/163/390911840_670d1078e1.jpg?v=0
Blue
1. First we are going to make a duplicate of our red channel to use as our eventual selection mask. Make sure that you have selected the Red Channel from the levels pane. Now right click on the red channel and select duplicate channel. You should now have a "red copy" channel. This is what we will create our selection mask from.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/136/390911854_04e7840607.jpg?v=0
Now this channel alone does not have enough contrast to make a good mask yet, so we are going to fix that using the levels command.
2. Make sure "red copy" Channel is selected and then Select from the Menu Image->Adjustments->Levels...
3. Now bring the black arrow(left) towards the center until you have turned the blue water to the level of black that you want without losing the splash and foam that you want.
4. Now bring the white arrow(right) towards the center until you have made the foam pure white where you want the foam to show through. I like to leave a little room between the black and white arrows to allow for some gradual fading of what shows through and what doesn't.
5. Now adjust the grey arrow(middle) to your preference where you still have a little texture in the foam. You should have something similar to below. Click OK and now we have a perfect selection mask.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/188/390913155_1f623b9490.jpg?v=0
6. Click the RGB tab so you see the OOB in color again. Click back on the layers Tab and select the layer "mask" (click on it) that is linked to your original image (very important).
7. Select from the Menu Selection->Load Selection... From the channel drop down menu, select the "red copy" as your selection mask. You should see something like this with the crawling ants as your selection that matches your mask that we created from the "red copy" channel.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/163/390911844_e6bad1e7c5.jpg?v=0
8. Now select a big paint brush and make sure your foreground color is white and start painting over the water. You should see that the white foam is showing through everywhere that you paint.
"If this is not happening then you probably do not have the mask linked to the original image selected." ("hint: ctrl-H will toggle marching ants on and off in windows")
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/173/390913158_68f5db15ff.jpg?v=0
9. Now we want to make the foam also look like it is on top of the frame in places, so using the same selection we want to click on the mask linked to the white frame(very important). But now we want to change the paint brush to black and then paint over the frame where we want the splash to be on top of the frame.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/84/390913157_671e670920.jpg?v=0
Hopefully you have something like this when you are finished. This method can be used for other things that are hard to mask. You just need to pick the color channel that provides the best starting point.

Thank you very much for taking the time to make these screen shots and go into detail about making a mask and showing us how you got that water splashing done in your OOB shot, this is how I learn by picture, the words without the pictures don't make sense to me, I learn by seeing then reading and doing.

-esheato, great cobra OOB. Perfect masking job.
-mbx777, outstanding masking and fun pic to use for your OOB. Nice frame warpage too!
-mercphoto, tremendous job...well done! I see you figured out the Windows to Mac translation. If I remember my Mac days the left click should just be the mouse button for Mac...they don't have a right mouse button or at least when I used to have one, but it's been a while??

The hardest part is the masking, which I'm not overly good at. I don't feel I get nice clean lines on my masks.

Bill, another nice job on your car OOB. As far as the extraction method masking, use a "harder" brush vesus a "soft" brush for hard edged items such as your car body and such. Also be sure to use the shift key when masking straight edged areas. Like for instance the car fender, just click on one end of the fender where it sticks out of the frame and then hold down the shift key, move the brush as far along the edge that is being masked so that when you click again the brush will mask out between those two clicks creating a perfectly straight mask line.
For hair/fur or other softer edged items use a softer brush accordingly.

Nice job Bill on both of these cars. If you are having trouble drawing the mask, with something with this sharp of color change edge like the car, the magic wand selection tool works very nice. It should be able to distinguish the car from the background easily and might be better than trying to draw the mask free hand. Select the car with the wand and if you don't get it all on the first click then Shift Click on the part of the car that didn't get selected. This should add to your selection until you have selected all you want and then inverse your selection and use that to paint your mask. I hope I didn't confuse.

Wow! These are all fantastic. I've just spent the last hour going through all 12 pages of posts and some just blow my mind. I thought I was doing something no one else was with my flowers. (below) Now I see there is a whole community built around these OOB images and much more sophisticated then what I have been doing. I think I've found a new home...hehehe
