View Full Version : Assignment #10: Shadow

Reflections (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=43772) appeared to be a interesting theme, lots and lots of great entries.

Now let's turn our lenses to something less shiny: shadows.

The goal is to photograph a shadow - primarily.
If something else goes into frame - it's OK (unless you want to clone/crop it out), but the shadow should be the hero of your picture.

As always: fresh pictures only, no massive PS compositing, etc.
For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).

Let's get some shadows!

Nikolai...get out of my head! I was on a walk and sure enough I was following this guy...this thread popped into my brain and there I was taking picutes of myself. All adjustments were in RAW conversion, just tweaked the exposure levels with Lightroom. Thought it would be fun to have shadow exposed correctly vs the norm.

No, that was 'The Kid', one of my partner's in crime who accompanied me on a cross country run through Colorado and New Mexico that I hope to get posted next week. The images from that ride can be seen here (http://pathfinder.smugmug.com/gallery/1882113)

I just realized I have another "shadow" for you also.

Got a couple shadows for ya! I hope they turned out well. Out of the whole afternoon, I had trouble focusing b/c it was so darn bright!

Those are stalks of corn.....we actually brushed the very tops of them with the bottom of the basket then gassed er up and floated high above again. Corn looks so different from the air! Thanks for the nice words.:thumb

Nikolai, i think you could be right about it needing a little more contrast. I was shooting with a harsh background light. Thanks for the suggestion.
Here it is again with a little more contrast:

Much better!
If I were you, I would also lose the bottom part (where the wall hits the floor), to make it pure abstract.

Also - as an idea - what if the picture is left in color? :scratch

Nikolai,
You were right about cropping at the bottom of image. I thought about the color portion, and it seems to me that B&W gives it an original look.

Thanks for your help......

There is a shadow, but it's sooo subtle... It would be the 5th or 10th thing that would come to my mind if I was asked what this image is about. :dunno
