View Full Version : Assignment #9: Reflections

Nikolai
Sep-29-2006, 01:32 PM
Our attempts to speed things up (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=43306) didn't bring us a lot of material.
So may be it's a sigh that we need to slow down, relax and reflect on things.
Which brings our next topic: Reflections.

The goal is to shoot things reflected.

A pond, a pool, a puddle, a shiny car, a chrome casserole, or, kh-m, a mirror or store window - all those will do.

A polarizer definitely can be a great helper here.

For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).

Let's get reflected! :D

Just to start things up.

NOTE: they are touched, but not cheated:-). I mean, no compositing....

Well maybe I misunderstood, Here are my initial attempts but will shoot some more along the lines of your examples.

The rest are some attempts at the challenge as well.

Reflected neon or lit by neon

That's pretty cool!
More neon than reflection:-), but still fits the topic:-)
Let's keep reflecting! :thumb

Shiney car.... hmm.... I like that option!

The last assignment, I really ment to do and I had ideas..... but one, there were no fountains around....and trying to capture the trees blowing was getting frusterating. ESP douring the BRIGHT mid day..... and saying this week FLEW by, would be an understatment.

I'll head out tonite and find some stuff!:D

I'll jump in on this one with 2 shots/ One from a week ago, one from yesterday.

The Ralph Lauren store window had a $88,000 benz reflected into it. (how fitting is that) And yes, the sticker was still on the car.

I only wish reflection was a bit more obvious.

I'm glad you did find some time for reflecting...:lust

They are all fine, but you've set your own bar so high before, that I cannot help but looking for improvements :dunno
So, if I may - some C&C...:wink

Wheel - could use some be cropping and curves/levels
Flag - rather nice as it is :-)
Window - well, it's a reflection alright:-):rolleyes
Mirror - I think some "extreme cropping" would defeinitely help here....

Another great set of entries!

And another set of C&C, hope you don't mind:-)

Spectacles - nice!
Maybe desaturate the rest except the reflection? Just an idea...
Street wall lantern - awesome.
Crop, maybe?
Patio furniture - another good one.
Maybe also some crop?
"No soliciting" - great capture!
Straightening and cropping would help greatly, IMHO.
B/W possibly?
Rowers - good catch!
"Crop, baby, crop"
Broken reflection - almost perfect!
Just a small trim from the right, maybe some curves - and it there wiil be no "almost"All in all, you've being very "reflective" today:-) :clap
Thank you very much for the great entries! :thumb

Thanks NIkolai.

Wheel- It was rather dark in the parking garage and I left my tripod in the truck a few blocks away. OOPS!! No PS so it is what it is- there is always opprotunities for these.

Mirror- yeah I know. Once I posted it I was like "ahh damn" never touched it.

Windows- so does that mean they're good- okay- or ho hum?

Welcome to the class! :clap

It's never late to submit a good fresh picture! :deal

However, I should say that I don't see a lot of reflection in this one.
I mean - there are catchlights, and it's glassy, but the whole image does not "cry" "reflection" as it's primary subject. :dunno
Wanna give it another try? We have the whole week, and then some :wink

Thanks! :thumb

Thank you for submitting!

As you know, PP is never required, but always appreciated:-)

Windows - with all honesty, it's probably the weakest submission from the whole set of yours today. Yes, it fits the assignment, so I have no right to say anything negative about it.
But, unlike your other shots, both from today and from before, it only fits the assignment.:dunno
I wouldn't give it another look should I see under different circumstances, you know what I mean?
That broken reflection with the balconies - some more PP, and it's a challenge material... Windows... nah, I don't think so...

I wouldn't say this at all if I haven't seen your other work, both in this class and outside it. I hope you understand... :lust

I just took these. I've got soem other somewhat recent, VERY good shots, If I get permission too throw them in, I will.

otherwise... here goes. I've gotten the reflection shots down. I learned to focus on the reflected immage itself, turn untill the reflection is crystal clear. I knwo thay aren't the greatest overall pics, but... It hasn't rained much in a while here...

NO tripod... f 4.0 2.5 iso 200 (could have been lower, too noisy).. Auto focus

NO tripod... f4.0 4.0 iso 80 auto focus.

Looks like a reflection off your windshield judging by the distortion and what looks like a windshield wiper. Images are pretty underexposed so it's difficult to make out, including the reflected image. Nice perspective though!

Thanx.. on the second one I went out to re shoot it and I lost the lighting on the subject, it was dificult to get back using a long exposure b/c I was, again, not using a tripod and in an awkward position.. I would shake if the shutter was open for longer than 5 seconds.

Our attempts to speed things up (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=43306) didn't bring us a lot of material.
So may be it's a sigh that we need to slow down, relax and reflect on thibrings our next topic: Reflections.

My first try at assignments...

I wish I would have paid attention more to what was around. It wasn't until I got home and uploaded that I saw the fire engine in the reflection. I wish I would have gotten just the engine. I was more worried about getting the kids (who were not complying). Oh well, just another lesson for me to pay attention to my surroundings :)

Ok cool I assumed (and we all know how yo spell that, ass u me, LOL) that you were thinking it was all post processed and I am a stcickler about that. Other than my IR shots I do very little to NO post processing. If I can'y get out of the camera and maybe do a little contrast or sharping with Photoshop then I am not proud of the picture. That picture was very proud of beacuse it was straight out of the camera.

Nik, I REALLY need help on understanding those dad-gum filters! I have an ND on the kit lens (because a friend said I should protect it with a filter), and it seems to blur everything up! Any suggestions on where I could go to read up and get a better understanding? Oh, and it has to be SIMPLE English for newbie camera people as anything more complicated, my eyes start to cross and I feel myself slipping into oblivion. :scratch

Well, it's a broad subject, I suggest to google for detailed techincal explanation and theory. Short writeup in Wikipedia is here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarizing_filter#Polarizer) (ND is right below it).

In brief, reflected light is often (if not always) polarized, i.e. light waves osccillate in a single plane rather than at all 360 degrees.
A polarizer filter has a property only to let through the light whose plane of polarization is parallel to its own, and block the light whose plane is at 90 degrees, with some intermediate values in between.
Rotating the filter while shooting the window can create either "mirror" effect (window will look like a mirror), or a pass-through effect (when window almost disappear).
When shooting for relection is almost always a good idea to have the polarizer filter on and rotate it for maximum reflection capability.

In fact if you are using a most convient pair of sunglasses with polarizing lens, you will see the density of the sky to change when you bend your head to the right or to the left.
Moreover, driving with polarizing glasses is very confortable as they cut the reflection of the road.
However, it is not advised to drive with too denses glasses. These are for very bright environments like snow or sea.

Try to look throught the viewfinder with polarizing glasses.:D

The first picture is without CPF and the second is with the filter. This one has obvious better results.

After a certain angle (depends on the media) you will get 100% reflection no matter what, it's a plain physics (google/wike/ask for critical angle, etc).

Yep:-)
Usually internal reflection is reserved for a media denser than another (e.g. glass or water vs air), in which case you get a less than 180 degree angle covering 180 view.. But in practice you need to shoot it from under water, so it's a bit hard to achieve... :dunno

I was just very excited about me posting stuff that I just uploaded and started posting... I haven't done anything to the photos, no retouching or anything - the watermark is my watermark on SmugMug...

But I will def. start working and doing light retouching to my photos for class...

Thanks...

BTW, here is a link to all the raw photos that I shot yesterday, so please, feel free to take a look and see what you think... I know this is not the whipping post, but I'm ready for everything. :clap

FINALLY!! I had some time to head out with the assignments in mind last Monday and had time yesterday to process a few...

Desktop Reflections (the OOF objects = keyboard, extra Canon battery and battery charger)

Reflections of San Diego (found in a broken window of one of the few abondoned buildings near downtown)

I'll flag that 2nd one for some more processing time when I get home, but I had to pump it up quite a bit to get it that visible!

Who-ho!! Passed my first assignment!! And I've got time to go out shooting tonight!! :ivar

Thanks Nikolai!! :thumb

I wasn't thrilled with my previous submission and have been looking for a better opportunity. Hopefully you agree. I visited Chicago last week and found this shot. Two-in-one.
