My friend just bought the 17-40 and a 2x teleconverter. I tried to explain to him the light loss and quality....but he didnt seem to think it would be an issue. What do you guys think?

Of course your friend will have issues with that combination. Make a bet about it and make some money. :D

Teleconverters are not designed to handle the tight angles of light that the rear end of wide angle lenses produce. It is a poor combination and poor choice, but some folks just have to find out for themselves.

Heck, your friend may never even "admit" the problems when they manifest themselves, so you may have to just "let it go" to retain the friendship.

Thats what im thinking. He just got into the DSLR scene and has been scooping up new lenses and such. He said he had done "research" online about it. I said my peace and left it there. He said this would give him some range as opposed to buying a longer lens.... :cry

The 2X extender will not even mount on a 17-40 lens.

The Canon 2xTC won't even fit on the back of the 17-40. I rather doubt the 1.4 will either, but I haven't tried it. And why would you want to???

Canon has a very explicit list of the lens their TCs will safely fit with -

It says on the Canon USA website " This tele extender can be used with fixed focal length lenses 135mm and longer (except the 135mm f/2.8 Softfocus lens), and the EF 70-200 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 70-200 f/4.0L, and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS zoom lenses. Superb optically, it preserves the image quality of the lens it's mounted to and multiplies its focal length 1.4x. Effective aperture is reduced by one f-stop; autofocus is possible on any EOS camera when combined with a lens having an f/4 or faster maximum aperture. The new version II maintains the outstanding optics of the previous version, and adds enhanced weather-resistant construction, and improved anti-reflective surfaces in the barrel."

Yeah, the 1.4 and 2X extenders will not fit on a 17-40. The rear element moves all the way back to the end of the lens when at 17mm. Plus, the hole is much smaller in diameter compared to a 70-200.

Now you can say "I told you so.":wink
