View Full Version : The sickness worsens...
Guys i have a very old (but perfect working cond)
Tamron 1:3.8
1:4/210
80mm-210mm
CF TELE MACRO
BBAR MC THETA 58
30 DEG - 11.3 DEG
Also says on barrel...1:2,8
1:1,4 2x conv
Also....32 down to 3.8/4
Well thats whats written on it anyway. Piece of cheap junk or will it fit & work well on a rebel ??.
AND ...I have a
Focal 28mm F2.8 Multi-coated Automatic Diaphram Wide-angle Lens (75 deg) for a canon (my old AE-1)
Again..is this stuff rubbish or will it fit & do ok on a rebel ?
Thats it..ive asked the question a day after i said i dont want a DSLR !!
Oh god help me....im in Ebay looking at DSLR's !!
And those long long white canon lens's...you know the ones..creamy cloured & smooth with a few black lines to throw a dangerous animals camoufage signal to keep clear.

Don't worry you can get real camo for those lenses here. (http://www.birdsasart.com/accs.html) Let us know when you get one or two. :evil

dunno if that's a luxury i can afford though... we'll see. i'm giving the ff camera a workout and if i like it, it'll stay. if not, out it goeS!

My guess is no.It has to be an EOS mount.

'gus, I think those lenses were for pre-EOS cameras, but I would not swear to the correctness of my answer. If they will fit the Digital Rebel they must say they fit EOS system Cameras somewhere. Look at the base of he lens that inserts into the camera and look for four electrical contacts.
I just took a quick shot of the rear end of an EOS lens for you to examine and compare with yours...

Regarding the Digital Rebel - I would not buy a new one now unless you get a smash-up deal on price. Buy a good used 10D, of hold out and get a 20D. You will be much happier in the long run, if you insist on going down the DSLR route. You know from the poor "L" glass addicts here how dangerous that can be to your finances.

no matter how well it is made, is worth the price of a new Chevy Cavalier. Unless of course, it can bend reality and bring you to the sites to see them up close and personal instead of just making them seem closer. That way a telephoto lens can let me meet the girl getting undressed in the window across the street! Then it might be worth it..

Thanks all...looks like its a paper weight then. Thats cool.
I think i am going to have to get a DSLR the more i think about it.
I really (i dont know how or why the typeface just changed !!) want to do surfing shots & anything under 400mm aint going to cut it. The FZ-20 has got that but i am concerned that if i grow out of it in 12 months then thats the price of good glass wasted. (do people on crack think like this ?)
Another question i cannot find an answer too...at least in laymans terms.
What is the REAL difference in a $2000 canon 400mm & a $400 sigma 400mm ? I understand glass quality but is that it ?
Im just going to go & curl up in the fetal position in the corner now & attempt to get that pic of the long white canon lens from my minds eye.

the glass is so much better - resulting in better color, saturation, contrast & sharpness.
but can the $400 400mm take good pics? sure, you bet. but you'll be able to shoot in more adverse conditions with the canon L - it's faster and also has i.s.

For surfing shots I suspect you will want at least 400mm in length,'gus, and at least f4 if possible. Auto focus works much much better with f4 lenses than f5.6 or f6.3. I like the Canon 400mm f4 DO IS quite a bit - no larger than the 300 f2.8 and no heavier.
You may find you want 500mm also. Sigma does make some zooms around that length I believe.
The Canon long glass if frighteningly expensive - but solid, sharp, and reliable and re-saleable if in decent condition. The mechanicals in the iris and the lens barrels are quite different than the cheaper lenses. You know the difference between a first class tool and a cheaper tool. The Canon L glass teles can be shot WIDE open - full aperature f2.8 or f4 and are sharp and crisp at those aperatures. Most of the Sigmas and Tamrons do not have IS and it is worth the cost for sharper pictures.
If you really want first rate telephoto shots be prepared to purchase a good tripod and ball head as well. The tripod and head suitable for long glass will cost more than the DMC-FZ20 though. I figure 1K USD
You may be able to hand hold a 400mm lens for a while, but not when you add telextenders or go to a 500mm prime. This is a whole new world and requires new skills. Think of looking through a 6x rifle scope and trying to keep it on target from a standing position - You WILL need support of some type, and the type is a good tripod.
I looked and looked last year for a more inexpensive way for real long glass and I have not found an acceptable alternative yet. I can find cheaper lenses and cheaper hardware - but the results are not the same and generally you can see the difference.
I told you it is a sickness, 'gus - You were warned! :rofl
An additional thought occured to me also - Anoher way of getting really long glass is called digiscoping - where you attach a standard digital camera to the eyepiece of a spotting scope ( I am not sure if that is the term in Ozzie - it is a telescope used to look at rifle targets from the shooters postion on a rifle range) - just google - digiscoping - You probably could use your curent Oly camera that way which would decrease the cost substantially. Won't compare to L glass and a 1D, but still prettty good and might work for you.
Another thought about long glass is that it is one of those things you dream about ( Me too - I own several long lenses ) When you really need one for sports or birds there are no real substitutes - but you really don't use them that much. My normal range zooms shoot 10 or 20 times more images for me than my teles -
Really long glass 400 and up - are very special tools and not walk around lenses. They end up being a lot of money that is used only sometimes for special activities - normal range lenses get a lot, lot more use. It can end up feeling likeyou spent a lot of money for an expensive lens to store in your closet much of the time unless you have a specific need and plan to do it often. Rental is the way to go otherwise. No such rental in my community unfortunately or that is the route I would go. You might see if rental is available in Perth or Sidney or somewhere. I know there are photographic tours of Ozzie that suggest lens rental is available. Just a thought.
the glass is so much better - resulting in better color, saturation, contrast & sharpness.

The beauty of long teles with wide aperature IS that the offer very shallow DOF with a very nice bokeh of the background isolating the subject very nicely. You can always stop a tele down ( except for mirror teles - but you can find 500 f8 mirror teles from B&H for under $300 USD) and get the larger DOF. But you cannot open to a larger aperature than the lens has. But larger aperature lenses f4, f2.8 f1.2 mean that the front objective lens is very large and that generally means it is expensive also if it is to be sharp and crisp optically.
http://pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/2848986-L.jpg
On of the reall differences between P&S cameras with 2/3 sized sensors and DSLRs with APS sensors ( twice the size of the 2/3s sensor ) or a full-frame sensor like Andy's 1DMkll, is that the bigger the sensor the more shallow depth of field at the photgraphers disposal. P&S cameras can be very sharp, but it can be very hard to create the shallow depth of field for artistitic purposes.
This is why the FZ-20 may not create images like a DSLR at long tele ranges. Andy can tell you more about the DOF available with the Sony 828 at the long end of the zoom versus his 1DsMkll.

:D :D :D I shot the snow goose with a 10D and a 400mm DO IS last spring. One thing about good glass is that it does not wear out and will be good for years, long after the 10D is passee'
What you can't see from the image is that it was shot from a tripod and a nice Arca-Swiss ballhead. With long glass, technique - tripod, mirror lock up, high shutter speed etc - are much more important. That is why handholding 400mm+ lenses does not usually lead to the quality of image that you are hoping for.
Andy is already noticing that the 16-35 L form Canon does not seem as sharp on the 1DsMkll as it seemed on the 20D in the corners of the frame. Full frame cameras are much more demanding optically. Micheal Reichman has written extensively about how higher quality digital sensors place increasing demands on the technique of the photographer and the optical quality of the lenses.
That is maybe one more reason to buy the best lenses you can, because as we upgrade our camers, previous interchangeable lenses may no longer be satisfactory. In the end, that is why I bit the bullet and bought the 400mm DO IS last year.

You are a wide angle close in shooter - I really thought you would prefer the 85mmf1.2 - Now there is a lens that will give shallow DOF and has a nice bokeh. And it is nice and black, and not as off- putting of candid subjects as the white teles are...... Just a thought. Comments?

Like I said 'gus - the problem with long teles no faster than f5.6 is that they tend to be slow to AF, and they usually not really good quality at their maximum aperature - so they may be f5.6, but need to be stopped 1 or 2 stops to f11 for really good image quality. This is a far cry from a lens that is f2.8 and can be shot at f2.8 - MUCH brighter in the viewfinder and much heavier to hold and much heavier to have to pay for. BUT once paid for, no doubt which lens you will prefer to shoot with.
What you will find is no matter which choice you make - you will want both. The Canon 100-400 is a very handy piece of glass because it can zoom. So I usually have it in my kit somewhere on a 2nd body. You'll notice that Andy has at least 2 bodies and an 828 as well. I'd venture to guess that you have more than one wrench in your kit too.
Most of the surfing shots I have seen seem to be shot with a 500mm f4 or a 600mm f4. Now these are big honking pieces of glass. And yes, they cost more than a nice used car - about the price of a new 650cc bike more or less. So many choices - so little time .......

I can see the issues that evolve as the best surf shots are late evening or early morning so you HAVE to have the fast stuff in that light.

the 85 f/1.2 is nice - but heavy, and slow on the af - so i opted for 85 f/1.8 which i just ordered today, having shot with it a couple weeks ago (borrowed it from steve cavigliano). the 85 f/1.8 is universally liked, and for the money, it's a great value.
yeah, the 85 f/1.2 is superbly creamy in the bokeh dept - it's a specialty lens that i would consider after owning the 85 f/1.8 for a while, and if i find myself shooting that fl much, i'll upgrade :wink
the 200 f/1.8 - yeah they don't make it anymore, so it'd have to be a used purchase - but i do have my eye on it!
i'm slowly drifting into wanting primes. i have the 35 f/1.4, the 50 f/1.4, and now the 85 f/1.8. at a minimum i'm considering the 200L f/2.8 - also a really good bargain (relatively speaking)! but damn - that 200 f/1.8 whooo boy :lol3

yeah 'gus - i can 100% guarantee that you won't be happy with any f/5.6 - 6.3 lens, becuase you're right - not only are the best shots taken during the "magic hour" and so light is low, but you also need fast shutter speed, so light gathering ability is paramount in for this type of shooting. additionaly, the faster glass (f/2.8 or f/4) would allow you to put on a 1.4x converter for yet more reach, still losing only 1 stop.
save your pennies, you'll be glad you invest in the better glass. and, as pf says, the glass will outlive any camera you buy :D

I decided to buy a dslr this year to take better shots of Motorbike racing. I bought a Canon 20d. I had an Olympus C-300, 3mp with 2.8 zoom. I took a lot of pictures with that camera ( even some good ones:D ).
Now I have a camera and lens ( Sigma f2.8 70 - 200 ) that exceed my capabilities.
Shot of garden with olympus.

I was playing with the focus on the d20, alternating focus between the vine and the birdhouse in the background. When I examined the pictures I found that I had got this

If I had set the shutter speed higher I might have got the fly in focus. I could never get this type of photo with my point and shoot.
Go for it.

Anything else in life than my perusal of ebay, all camera outlets, ads, etc, for a 20D that I can't get until I get a substantial tax return, and that is an if. Gonna get lots of clothes ready for Goodwill (a deduction).
If I can feed my camera hunger then I am sure I will graduate to LENSES.
What do they say about boats, it is a something that you pour money into? I place cameras as more dangerous than boats. Every day now I am getting a large 4 color Canon Ad in my newspaper. At least with boats, they don't hit you everytime you open your newspaper. You have to look for the boats.

i'm slowly drifting into wanting primes. i have the 35 f/1.4, the 50 f/1.4, and now the 85 f/1.8. at a minimum i'm considering the 200L f/2.8 - also a really good bargain (relatively speaking)! but damn - that 200 f/1.8 whooo boy :lol3
Primes are way cool. Problem is, you gotta carry 'em all with you. I'm slowly drifting toward L zooms. Uh...strike that...I'm firmly entrenched in L zooms. Got the 17-40/4, 24-70/2.8, 70-200/4, and I'm considering either the 70-200/2.8 IS or 28-300/3.5-5.6. It's definitely a sickness and once you shoot with L glass, you don't want to go back.

Tks andy/PF & all others that offered advice.
No way im going to buy 'half' a camera so some good quality 'normal' stuff will do til i get famous.
So the drebel has a very good AF system and image engine. Cheap too. It should carry you while you stock up on good glass. Then, some day, you'll cough up for a better body, and still have the good glass to use on it (assuming you stay with Canon).
Personally, I'd skip the PlastiRebel and go straight for a used 10D. Or if you're feeling flush, just go for the 20D. Or a 1Ds Mark II. Oh hell...just take out another mortgage and get one of each.
Hope that helps...

Great thread, humungosity, thanks for pursuing it. :thumb Lots of great explanations here, PF and Andy know their stuff.:nod
I have a 300 F4, and think it's slow to autofocus, especially with the 1.4x mounted, so now I want bigger and faster glass. But lord, the price is staggering. :eek1 I've been pretty liberal splashing my money around buying gear, but I've met my match. Upgrading to a 300 or preferably 400 2.8 is going to take some discipline and savings.

imo, what you really should be thinking about is the system, not the body - bodies will come and go - but lenses and many accessories are forever.
both nikon and canon make great glass - there are differences in their lens lineups and you should investigate both carefully.
also - there's a big difference between ccd sensor nikon and cmos sensor canon images. here too, you should make a thorough investigation to see what you prefer. neither one is "better" than the other, but there are differences and you should be aware of that.

Here lies my pain andy...
I really really want a 12x lens..period.
I cannot justify $2500 USD in gear at this point in my life so I would be going backwards to just get a DSLR with normal lens for say $1000 USD. The FZ-20 (they say) has a f2.8 12x across the zoom range...now i accept that it probably wont be that good (marketing being what it is) but im happy to put up with a slower 12x lens for an entire outfit below say $700 USD...the lens will still do good zooms at sunrise & sunset light.
Now i really want a 'bulb' setting which the FZ-20 does not have but DSLR's do.
I think i can answer my own questions with "which camera will be used more"
Here ..on the 2nd row down is a zoom example of the FZ-20 in strong light. I wish i could see some zoom shots in lowish light.

There is a very strong chance that I will be buying a D20 in February and selling my Rebel.
My Rebel cannot be priced high for a Rebel, as I have the original box and paperwork, but that is about all. I can vouch for me as a very casual beach going camera user. However, I am not giving it away either.........For that I would keep it.
I also have a Canon S230 pt and shoot, haven't decided on that.

The lens I used to take the photo of the dogs in the portrait challenge, first photo, and a very small part of the original photo, but excellent detail, etc. That was my walk around 28-135 Canon, NOT glass, but it is IS. Just thought someone might want to know. I like it a lot, no problems with it. Wish I could say the same about my 70-300 Canon, not glass either, but IS. I want a long lens. It would help if the long lens was not soft when full out. Kind of defeats the purpose. I am not buying new lenses.

Well, the 35mm equivalent of the FZ-20 is 36-432. So what you are looking for is either
for Nikon lenses that cover:
36/1.5 - 432/1.5 (= 24 - 288 )
for Canon lenses that cover: (considering you'll opt for the D30/D60/10D/20D/300D)
36/1.6 - 432/1.6 (= 22,5 - 270 )
Now, about Nikon I know absolutely nothing :D I think there are some people who can help you with that. As for the Canon setup I'd suggest:
17-40 f/4 L
70-200 f/4 L
1.4 TC
That'll do for starters and it will give you the same reach (a bit more even) as your FZ-20. You'd have to look around to see if it fits your budget!
Hope this helps a bit with your research!

I'm new to the dslr realm also but when I was purchasing I was stuck in the middle between the d70 and rebel, the more people I talked to about the d70 is yah its faster but the quality drops quickly, higher ISO's are unusable so I was told, so I went with a rebel, till I can get a few lenses in my pocket then I'll upgrade bodies. Just something else for you to research I guess. Well that's my story, I'll be joining the Lens Addidts Anonymus before too long.

'gus,
I have received the DMC-FZ20 earlier than I thought. I will try to begin to upload some original frames from it in a few days, so that you can see the quality and decide for yourself if it will meet your needs. It looks nice in black, the lens is large, the body is plastic and feels like it. It is very light.
A review is here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz20/
A camera you might consider, which has not been discussed here, is the new Nikon 8800 - which has a fast long lens and includes antishake technology in the body, similar to the A2 Minolta. The Nikon 8800 is an 8 Mgpixel camera and should have the nice Nikon color quality and a high quality Nikon lens. It is selling here in the US for $999. I have thought about one a travel camera on a bike - It uses an electronic viewfinder
The reviewer's are saying it is much better than the 8700 Nikon which did not get great reviews. Lots to think about. You can read about it here -

PF..i cant wait to see what you think about the lens speed over the entire 12x range...they claim f2.8 thoughout & see your samples in some low light.
Yes i am also looking at the Nikon...it also has what i want except in a lot of personal reviews i read problems with higher iso's (noise) but it does have a bulb though & i want that. It also has time lapse which would be interesting to play with.

One day...in the not so distant future... i will be recognised as "that photographer" that was 1st on the scene with his lunch box & camera when they landed & tried to comunicate. I will share my ham & pickles with them over a chat & thermos of char.

get yourself a cheap-@ss lens as carry-around... Like the 75-300 that seems like an okay mediocre lens...
I carry my 17-40 and 70-200 alot with me. I've got a small bag where I keep the 70-200 and the body + grip + CF's + batteries in and I've got a belt pouch that I usually attach to the bag to hold the 17-40... I can show you a photo of it if you like :D (not to get you excited :wink)

'gus - I have time to play for a while with the DMC-FZ20 that I gave my son for Christmas. It has some very nice features and the lens seems reasonably sharp. The sensor is they typical 2/3 s sensor of a P&S and suffers from noise at higher ISOs.
I have three images to share - My son shot them on a very overcast grey winter day ( I doubt you get weather this grey and dark in OZ - :D At least the tourist bureau says you don't! :D )
The first image is at the wide end of the zoom and the second is at the long end of the zoom. The third image is of a dog we saw in the park. The dog was shot playing in the snow immediately after the sun went behind the hill at sundown and it was a very flat grey light nad the dog suffers from noise in the brown pixels of his coat. This is not the file straight from the camera but the file created after color balancing and saving as a jpg.

Hope this information is helpful. I do like the ability to switch between the LCD and the EVF - but the LCD cannot be moved or rotated. I think this camera - like most 5 MPxl cameras can make great pictures, but you must use the sensor area fully - the ability to crop is limited.
The last image is the same canine - Sarah is her name - taken with a 20D so you can judge for yourself how the quality compares.

when i can't afford a lawn or kitchen appliances for my new house, I think I'll regret it :wxwax
Lawns are overrated. You just need to keep watering and mowing them. Get some green paint and voila! :thumb

Nice shot, David, I love the fine detail in the fur and the perfect exposure.
Thanks waxy. I wish it would clear up here...really dark, gray, cold and rainy. No fun shooting. Hopefully I'll turn in some better shots in the coming days and weeks.

But now we are down to the 70-200 IS 2.8L which comes with a case and doesn't use drop in filters.
The 500 & 600 come with what I'd call a 'travel' case. Hard sided and lockable.
It's too bad the case says (in bold white letters) exactly what's in it :dunno

Sounds just like the cases Canon's 300 and 400mm lenses come in - They look like ladies cosmetic travel cases and say "STEAL ME!" in nice white Canon letters on the side. That is why I was looking at the Kinesis bags - at least they are black and fairly soft.
Fish - I feel your pain about the weather - It is raining here too and 29 degrees outside! :wxwax And lots of slippery ice and snow.

These are things of which I knew not!
I do remember loving the feel of my old, but not at the time, long Nikon lens, back in the early 70s. Positively Freudian.
I wonder if it means something that I know not of lenses anymore and just want cameras. I think not, I think that once I have that 20D, the lens thing will kick back in.
But nothing will feel as good as that old Nikon 300.

The other thing about soft bags is that they are easier to carry. With the hard case,
you mount the lens and either take another body or forget changing it. Prolly the
later. The soft case is nothing to carry(empty) and gives you something to stash
the lens for something else.

Ginger - a lens that costs more than a good used car deserves a case at the very least. You don't want that nice lens getting all dinged up in its travels through the world. Hurts its resale value and the owner's pride of ownership!

get it. you will not regret it.
OK so I am sold on the 2.8 apperture but I have the 100-400 L already so does it fit in the bag, even with the 1.4 extender which which I have does not give AF on the 100-400
:rofl great idea. you wanna come over and help me paint half an acre of dirt?
That is worth $500,000 here if you can get permission, Go for the lens, as Shark says nothing eles matters, except maybe an education...

Here's my bomb-proof setup, modified today to fit the 70-200/2.8 IS. Easily strapped to the TotL racks on my RT and GS.
Pelican 1500 (quite reasonably priced at bhphoto).

I have an old Pelican box bolted to the top rack on my 1150GS also Fish, but a 500mm Is will not fit in that box I suspect.
And I worry a little about the constant vibration in the box attached to the frame at the back acting as a lever arm...

I'm not all that concerned about it. Have you heard of any lenses being destroyed by motorcycle vibration? The only one I've heard about was Turkish's, but his bounced down the road after falling off the bike :rofl

Expensive? Pah!!! Just have a go at underwater photography!!! The housings, the strobe (just got a new one delivered, brought tears to my eyes - and my wallet - especially since mytrip to the Maldives will probably get cancelled now), not to mention all that pesky dive gear!!!
