View Full Version : grey headed flying fox
crop shot from my balcony-just caught it in edge of frame-australias largest bat with a 1 meter wingspan-it flies up to 50 km per night looking for nectar and is an important natural pollinator of eucalypts and other native flora.10,000 of these are camped on the banks of the yarra river, running through melbourne

Ive been trying to get one of these shots for yonks gtc. I cant get close enough. Get a few thousand fly over my place every evening.
I get a lot of abstract stuff in the low light.

Neat catch. Just being there and shooting leads to unexpected surprises sometimes :1drink

i like these images-kind of like manta rays
i am lucky enough to be on a second story flat which is between two parks-they like to fly over trees as much as they can-it took me a while too-i used my hvl-1000 flash and Oly tcon-17
and gave up trying to compose-too fast-rather I blaze away by pointing the lens at them after I have achived rough autofocus on a lit window from the flats next door which approximates the height.
i can only do it every couple of weeks as otherwise they change flight path
for quite awhile-the other way to do it is to wait for stragglers-older and younger bats which fly a little lower and sometimes a bit off course.
the trick is though to gain a bit of height-up on a roof etc and get some choice
good luck

Heres my other attempts if you can see past the 'noise' Im on the top floor as well between 2 large inner city parks as well. They really take flight when fireworks goes off.

i like it! they look a little like alien space ships-particularly 1 & 2 . Noise dosen't worry me in something like these images.
It looks pretty light in these shots so I would imagine the fox camp would be fairly close, if you want to get closer to them.
