View Full Version : Assignment #6: Extreme Crop
Nikolai
Sep-08-2006, 11:21 AM
We got nice Tilts (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41783) this week. Now let's do something different.
The new assignment is all about cropping.
The main difference between this class and the previous ones is to present not one, but two images per entry: the first should depict they way you saw the subject originally (like a street scene), while the second, cropped, should show the final image.
You might wanna use a zoom lens, or do some post work.
In any case: locate the target, take a shot of it with surroundings, and then take a closeup, or trim it in post. No need to go all macro like Brian does, but I would expect the cropped version being like 10% or so of the wider one..
For basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).
Let's get cropped! :D

I walked on the street some hours ago looking for tilted photos.
But this is good for the new assignment.
It's title is: Sideboard and pavements with shadows
Tell me about it Nikolai, please.

This is not something I meant. I didn't mean PP. I meant CROP.
Here, I stepped out a took a couple of shots (this is an example of real life crop as oppposed to purely PP one)
01: Patio: as is:
http://nik.smugmug.com/photos/93917283-L.jpg
02: Patio: closer (cropped) look:
http://nik.smugmug.com/photos/93917285-L.jpg
It's the same object (corner of the balcony), but me being closer actually allowed me to see the shady roof beneath it. This would not be possible just in PP...:dunno
See what I mean?
For the record: PP-only crops also count:-)

However - it would be tres cool to "zoom" not into the car badge, but into the that antic door with graffiti, don't you think? :scratch
Kinda gives the viewer element of surprise, and serves the main purpose of this assignment: the ability to see something small behind the something big... Everybody can see the car, you know.. But that door - it's so HCB..:wink :thumb

Have to admit I've been "lurking" here. Some really great things have been posted. But Doug's squirrel crop pulled me in!!! That plus I just happened to have taken some shots of a Red Tailed Hawk last night that required "extreme" cropping, since I don't have anything longer than a 200mm lens!
Here' the original:

Cropped version: It's a little too much crop for my tastes, but in order to see the bird, well, you understand!!! :dunno

Not bad for a start:-) :thumb
I know that 200mm is not "a birder lens", but hey, it's not about the gear, it's what you can do with it.
As I mentioned earlier, this assignment is about seeing a jewel in a pile of raw ore. Michelangelo was trimming the excessive stone from the block of marble with his chisel. We use the crop tool:-)
Glad you decided to play with us! :):

I must apologize: my first "explanatory example" with the patio corner apparently was pretty lame and not that at all "explanatory". :dunno
Here's what I think is a better instance of the "extreme cropping" which I had in mind (all pictures taken 10 minutes ago).
01: Normal view. Here's what I see when I step out on my driveway:
http://nik.smugmug.com/photos/94101731-L.jpg
02: This little thingie got my attention:
http://nik.smugmug.com/photos/94101754-L.jpg
03: Here's a post-processed (or post mortem:-) crop.
As it's easy to see, the original 8mp image does not provide enough resolution:
http://nik.smugmug.com/photos/94101756-L.jpg
04: Now that we actually saw it, we can use some real-time cropping: lens zoom or, in my case, "foot" zoom to get the crop we want:

Nikolai,
You did not only zoom by foot, did you ?
It looks that you have done both: zoom with the lens and zoom by foot.
It looks you have used a different lens for the leave: a zoom or a prime at 100/200/250 mm ...
I was not aware - my fault - of this extreme crop/zoom.
Tomorrow ...

A little bit of lens zooming (17mm at normal view, 68mm at closeup), yes, but only because I didn't want to lay myself flat on a h-h-h-hot californian asphalt:-). Otherwise it was the same 17-85 IS USM.
I was not aware - my fault - of this extreme crop/zoom.

Not much of a crop, but this guy caught me by suprise, I was actually shooting something else and then I seen this guy right in front of me! If I would of thought about the challenge I would of took a shot zoomed all the way out also, but this is full zoom at 150mm (300mm @ 35mm film scale).

These aren't fresh but they stand out in my mind of examples of how big a difference a crop can make.
I sort of discovered this one by mistake while working on an enlarged version in PS:

and a great crop of Ginger's:
http://gingersnap.smugmug.com/photos/6728371-L.jpg
This crop isn't so extreme, but I think it really makes the shot. It was Andy's suggestion on the Whipping Post:

I don't want to be a bore - may be I am already - but I would like to know if this concept of extreme crop, which is nothing but a crop of the same picture, is correct.
I would like to know because of the shots I'll be doing tomorrow for this thread.
I hope I made myself clear.
I put it in more telegraphic way:
I have seen crops of the same picture.
Do they fit the general ideia of the concept extreme crop ?
Sorry folks. :):

Please read the original post.
I mentioned "10%" of the original picture.
I also said PP crops are fine.
You can go with the pure PP crops, thus inevitably suffering from the lost of resolution. This is post mortem crop. This means a photographer failed to see the real target while s/he was shooting and only realized the real worth of the whole thing afterwards. This happens often, and Rutt's (even outdated) examples are the great proof to that. I have experienced similar issues (also with glasses:-), and I'm sure everybody has plenty of such shots.
My example with the real-time crop of the leaf on the cul-de-sac is what we *really* want to achieve. You look at the scene and you notice something. You are trying to zoom in, but your lens is not long enough. Hence comes the ultimate zoom, the "foot zoom". This is what this whole class is about - ability to analyze the scene in real-time and make shooting decision right then and there.
I said in the very beginning - PP crops are fine. Real-time ones are better. Changing the angle totally, like you did with the three people, is, IMHO, a bit outside of this particular assignment. :dunno

It was a cold February morning, and I was in a zone. Crossing 5th Avenue at 23rd street, I saw this - and fired off a shot. The whole thing was maybe 2 seconds. 1Ds Mark II with 50mm f/1.4 on board.

Antonio - I think those are all good, but I especially like the first one (the iron and ironing board pair). I like the pairs of photos where it's almost like a puzzle to see the first picture and then to try and figure out which part of first picture is the crop/close-up is in the second picture. I also that the second picture is interesting as a individual photograph as well.
Angelo - I really like the shapes and contrast in those photos. I'd be interested to see and even closer shot in the second one - all the way up to the ceiling glass or the details in the cross-beams. Can you fly? :D Obviously, there are situations where getting as close as we would like aren't quite so easy.

It's not important whether I like it or not.
I'm here only as a sideline field umpire to tell the players wether the ball is in (entry is compliant with the class subject) or out (it might be a Mona Lisa, but since no cropping is done - it's not valid. Besides, Leonardo did it way before we started the class, so he'd need to paint a fresh copy :rofl :-)
What is important is for YOU, as a photographer, to see what this or that particular technique does, and when it can be beneficial for you to use it. Some crops can be plain ugly. Some can be meaningless. Yet some develop a totally new, interesting meaning to the whole picture.
We are all here to learn. And we learn together:-) :):

Uh, I was interested so I took a look at this............Nik, what are we supposed to be learning here.
If one focuses correctly, with a great lens, etc., it is just too easy.
I mean something I can do right off has to be too easy.
And as I understand it, one can either do two shots of the same scene, one as kind of a wider look and one selecting part of the wide look and featuring it alone. One can either do that with two shots or in post, could not one? You said, "trim", that would be post would it not?
I am not trying to be argumentative here, smile, just curious...........why would one not do this in working any subject???
If one had time and the subject was willing.
ginger (waiting on the server) I am not big on cropping much in post, but am not against it either. But I do work a shot to death.

Thank you for asking!
What we (are trying to) learn here is to look at the scene and try to "see" something that is not probably visible at a causal glance.
Look at the harbor and try to see a beautiful ship.
Look at the tar pit and see a birsting bubble.
Look at the garden and notice a dragonfly.
Look at the dragonfly and notice there are, in fact, two of them, mating.
Look at the sanctuary and see a tiny stained glass flower far up in the window.
Look at the suburban summer heated cul-de-sac and the a fallen leaf, a message from a coming fall...
Pros and experts (like you) do this automatically. Mere mortals, like the rest of us, need to be trained.
Wanna play? :wink

Hi Ginger -
I think that one lesson we can take away from this is that we can become more aware of the details within a scene.
I think there are various ways that one could challenge themselves with this assignment.
1. Would be to take an ordinary scene and take a picture. Then, go in either with your lens or with your feet or both and find a really interesting detail that can be composed and photographed.
2. Take a really interesting picture which covers a wide view. Then see if there is something within the frame that is interesting in and of itself. Crop to see if it is a composition unto itself.
3. Take a picture of the wide view that is compelling, well-composed and well-photographed. A wide view (not necessarily wide-angle) that can stand on it's own. Then - choose an interesting detail and compose a close-up photo that stands on it's own as well - compositionally, technically, artistically. Accomplishing this would be impressive.
It's an interesting challenge to compose the large shot and to then try and re-compose the detail (extreme crop) shot. So far, I think that the submissions that are actually two different images have been most interesting. Capturing only one scene that is interesting in full-view and then cropping it in PP is something that I think would be quite a challenge - but then that is why this is a great educational set of entries that Nikolai has put together.
So, that's my take on it.
I have a second submission. I don't like this one as well as the first pair that I entered (http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=381164&postcount=40). I think the first image is pretty boring. There wasn't really any composition to speak of and it's full of unnecessary information. I like the second shot and took the first one with the second, close-up image in mind.
Wide view of things:
Boring:
http://furinfocus.smugmug.com/photos/94201452-M.jpg
Not great, but a bit more interesting, I think:
http://furinfocus.smugmug.com/photos/94201466-M.jpg
(both of these were taken with my 50mm lens - so the extreme crop is almost all due to my physical location - just a little bit of extra cropping PP)
I knew when I looked around on the street that I wanted my close-up to be of the yellow tape against the orange plastic. I took the first shot so that I could take the second one!
(note - now that I look at the first photo - I think that there may have been something interesting to explore with that black piece of "hardware" that is attached to the concrete in front of the cones - what is that? It looks kind of cool!)
One more thought (and as Nikolai said, the experts may do this automatically). There is a difference between going out to take pictures of the things that we already know are beautiful - a flowing waterfall, a freshly bloomed rose, a bee on a sunflower). The real challenge is to go out and find the captivating image that everyone else overlooks. This assignment is good training for the second approach. I know that's what I really want to learn and perhaps why I was motivated by this assignment.

I have another question then. Mary, you knew that yellow and orange thing was your goal. I think it is very interesting, inventive thinking outside of the box, etc.... all you were striving for.
But could you go back and shoot a non boring photo of the wider look?
Just a thought and an idea. I am itching to do it, but it is not my shot, I don't live there, and I have to be at the oral surgeon's tomorrow.
I do think that you captured exactly what you wanted in the second shot.
ginger
I actually don't know what I took over the weekend, I could dig up other shots, say of the harbor, but lately I have gone to quite nice looking places, IMO. Unfortunately.....................darn!!!

Ginger - It's funny that you ask - because when I looked around for the first shot the whole scene just looked so ugly! Taking a picture of the scene that would be interesting would definitely be a challenge. Which is another lesson - sometimes the wide scene is most captivating - sometimes it's the details. And, if both can be compelling - well that is something!
I may not be able to get another shot in the near future, though if I'm not running late for class on one of the nights this week I may try. This was shot mid-day on a Saturday so a weekday evening may make for something completely different. There will be more automobile traffic during rush hour and probably more people which could result in more options for an interesting image.
Thanks for the challenge! ;)

of the parts.........and then a closer view of the parts.
http://upacreekPHOTOGRAPHY.smugmug.com/photos/93752846-L.jpg
I did this a week ago and posted it on the Daily Community, but is it not a different type of example of which you all are talking about. Three separate photographs. Full frame, or if not, almost. No reason to crop them. The middle photograph I was a bit disappointed in. I liked the other two, but thought they would make a good "arrangement" seen in context, yet separate.
?????
Will look for another example that was a crop. I worked the flowers. But using people I don't know, or where the shot could be lost, I sometimes do have to crop.
ginger (I was working up some more photos, things I wanted anyway, when I realized that I can't stay up for a couple of hours until the server could bring my photos to smugmug. I will put them up tomorrow, or so. Unless I go shoot, if I do, I will remember this assignment and shoot some for it.)

Also known as "Top Fuel" dragsters. The other fun ones to watch are the "Funny Car" races in the evening - flames come out of the sides of the cars. The flames, along with noise make for quite an impressive spectacle!
(I used to work for Summit Racing - a company that supplies alot of the parts for these kind of cars and also sponsors the races and certain drivers. If it wasn't for that little chapter of my life, I wouldn't know a thing about these cars! About ten years ago I got to hang out at the start line of the Spring Nationals in New Jersey! Kind of fun!)
I was going to ask where you took the photo - but I see that your from Englishtown...So, I think I can guess!

Got this shot over the weekend on the CT river and it needed a lot of cropping anyway, so I post here for the assignment. We could hardly tell it was a bird at first with the naked eye. Between the focal length of the lens (280mm) and the crop, the detail really comes out. I know it's not very extreme, so I'll probably try something else later.

I'm late to the party, Nik, I've been on the road, and just returned home Monday after 3300 miles in the saddle.
We stayed in Lamar Colorado one night, riding in just at sunset - sweet light. I shot this sunset with a Lumix DMC-LX1 - Hence the noise. But as I examined the scene, I saw this detail as much more interesting
http://Pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/95303655-M.jpg http://Pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/95308087-M.jpg
The next morning we rode to Bent's Fort (http://www.nps.gov/beol/) in SE Colorado in heavy fog.
Here is a shot of a saddle hanging in a doorway in Bent's Fort. I loved the soft side lighting, but not the whole image...

I think this one is much better than the previous one. I wonder if you could encrease the f/stop, say, to f/11 or maybe even higher to get more DOF.
It looks like you had used a slash, so you should have plenty of light...
Just a suggestion...:dunno
I'm always the first to admit that I often am not sure exactly what I'm doing-- so I will try this later when I have some time. I'm still one who is not completely comfortable fiddling with all them manual features, so sometimes changing little things intimidates me--- I'll definitly play w/ aperature later on this one and see if that helps out... and yeah I did use flash. As with most of my pics as of late, I've been having to do assignments at home after I get home from work since it's too late for the sun to peak out.

You learn something new every day Nikolai !!!!!
It is fairly uncommon to see a camels in Australia - there is a paddock full of camels at Redland Bay the next suburb to where I live - I often photograph them - they are very inquisitive.

I think I got the mother of all chances to do an adidas-zoom :D
The place is the HUT campus, right next to the main building.

How about that location for a gull's nest :D
There's a walkway 6 feet away, this is gonna get intresting come hatching time...
Here's a bonus, taking the risk of getting bombarded let's you zoom through the bird.

You'll have to excuse the slight jarring, didn't stay long... :lol3

I like the approach/vision. Technically you're in.
However the 2d shot is plain boring. Bird is in a dead center, nothing is going on, lighing is flat... :dunno

You're right, I tried a bit more pp on it, got the image replaced now.
Wouldn't give meself a passing grade on 'saving your worst shot' there, but in my defence, the shade had just reached the nest when I got there, and this is racing driver level excuses now, I can either think creatively or fast not both :D

This thread was started in 2006 if I read right - but there are posts from 2008. I know it was for the Assignments thread - can we still post to the different topic threads?
Maybe a stupid question but I'm going to get the list and try to work through some of them and was wondering if I could still get feedback from Darth SLR :)

The wood plug (that covers a screw) at the bottom of the image. You know, the part that's in focus. :wink :D
Its the same plug that's to the right of the hardware (as you're looking at it) in the second image.

Oh, I see.. I thought about that, but it seemed too insignificant to me to suggest it should the the focus of the whole image. I think it only shows that I don't know much about boats to appreciate this kind of stuff :wink

Nah, Nikolai. I think it means that I'm too much into looking for minutiae and trying to confuse people with it. I've done it all my life, and this assignment gave me yet another opportunity to utilize that tired, used up ploy again. :rofl

I actually did this one the other way around as I'm fascinated by birds of prey - although I don't have a birding lens really - only 200mm
First the scenery... on a really dull day but I was thinking of the technique more than getting an awesome shot
http://www.louandjase.com/dgrin/assignments/ExtremeDOF/DSC_8139.jpg
That tiny tiny speck just above the trees on the left...
http://www.louandjase.com/dgrin/assignments/ExtremeDOF/DSC_8134.jpg
Then my second - slightly more obvious attempt- pic of a stream (I actually stopped to photograph the bridge which dated to around 1700)
http://www.louandjase.com/dgrin/assignments/ExtremeDOF/DSC_8149.jpg
Then the extreme zoom
http://www.louandjase.com/dgrin/assignments/ExtremeDOF/DSC_8150.jpg
So is this the sort of thing - I did have to use my "feet zoom" in the first one but the second one I didn't as it would have meant walking off the bridge - a somewhat larger step than I was willing to take :wink
Thanks
Jase

Here are my attempts at a crop. My friend and I were casually smoking a cigarettes in my bathroom. Low and behold, a fly was buzzing around. After I chased it around for 10 minutes, I managed to knock it out. Needless to say, she was a very cooperative after that. Here they are, enjoy.
No photoshop, just submitted as shot.

It's a crop alright... However I would like to call your attention to the fact that we are not simply trying to use this or that technique for its own sake, but also deliver a quality result by using it. Your VP entries did great. These - no so much...:dunno

Silly me. You are absolutely right. The second you get lazy, it'll reflect in your work. I'll reshoot a proper crop. I took these for fun, and thought it fit the assignment. Thanks Nikolai. ;-)
