There's something special about taking your own portrait (self-portrait). Anybody can take a photo of you, but only you can do the hard bit about choosing how you want to be seen. It's not that we don't want to see your handsome visages taken by other people, but that we want YOU to shoot them and present them yourselves.
self-por·trait:
n. A pictorial or literary portrait of oneself, created by oneself.
Edit: I merged the two "show us your mug" threads. :)

Heh.. well, if you go look at my profile, you'll see one of my classic poses.. (my b-i-l caught my dear father digging for gold, so my sisters and I took the opportunity to poke some fun). Let's see here.. nothing exactly recent, but within a year.. (taken with an exceedingly poor camera, the Sony Mavica F73 - it uses floppies! ROFLE!)

Excuse me, fellers, but NO ONE said anything about it having to be a self portrait. We have this one character on our board, Bangbang, used to be a nurse at one of the state mental hospitals in Michigan, he shared with us once one of the most... moving, haunting self-portraits I have ever seen. He called the place The Big House (http://www.talktothehand.org/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=239). I just wanted to post this shot because it affects in a deeply personal manner.

Back in 1990, I got my first 1200 baud modem. At the time Lobo:The Mini-Series had just come out. It was a comedic re-rendition of an old Omega Men villain who was an intergalactic hitman. He used the term Frag! instead of F*** and referred to people as mother fraggers, but also used it to describe himself and others as killers. I liked the comic enough, that Fragger was my first handle.
Years later, Quake came out, and my handle was no longer sacred. For a while I got away with Fragger69, but soon you couldn't enter in Fragger on a new site without getting Fragger542021032982849. So since Lobo also referred to himself as The Main Man! I changed my handle to MainFragger.
Now that we got that out of the way..I got a question...
I uploaded my mug, saved right under where it asked me to do that, but my mug is not part of my message. What gives?

That is indeed the original meaning of it. But not the intended meaning in this case. Although, the use of it in the comicbook I got it from is only about 20 degrees off from that meaning in some cases. In other cases, it is merely used as an obscenity on a comic that needs to be Comic Authority approved.

Fragging is also used in online action gamming. A frag is a kill, a fragfest is a big battle, etc. Score is counted in (often) frags.

My favorite being the third of these four selects. (Although it doesn't show off the camera as well as some of the others).
The first is nice, but I would crop it tighter to lose the belt line, which I find distracting, and I don't think it's flattering--mostly because the high angle accentuates it.

I actually like the first one best, belt or no belt. The last one, I would expect an endorsement from Sony, lol. The others leave some room, geez, I don't know.

Now, if you watched more daytime TV (and who has time anymore?), but Rosie O'Donnel spelled that out very clearly, with mag cover demos, when she still had her show.
I guess the guy stood on a ladder with her. I am short, so I am always shooting up.............don't mess it up too much, I don't think. I tell people that I am always with me, so I make a handy "model" in a pinch. Sure helps with the boredom factor. A couple favorites. With all these assignments I have not had as much "boredom" lately, went straight to extreme stress, or as a friend said, "wound too tight". So no self portraits, or not many, may take some this afternoon, may take my camera to the beach, but it will be too early for nice color.............. anyway, a couple faves...
This is 3 or 4 AM a year or so ago. I just stay up and do my photos. I like being alone at that time of day, but eventually I kind of collapse and look like this.
http://gingerSnap.smugmug.com/photos/5506163-S.jpg
And this is a beach shot, or returning from the beach after taking the dogs and husband at dawn................ need to do it again soon, this was a while back. Depressing that I had gotten to a good weight.......
http://gingerSnap.smugmug.com/photos/5506496-M.jpg
More recently I was getting a haircut. Andy, you see in that picture above this type, the angle of the face. For someone in their sixties, no face lift (no make up), the angle kind of smooths out the jaw line which is just terrible at my age (never take it from the side as a candid), and the head tilt does about as much as shooting from above does.
This is straight on, see the jowls. I wanted to make sure I could show her how she had cut my hair that time. This is more recent. Actually my avatar is most recent. I have others from that day, and I notice that the ones I like the camera is being held, by me, up above me. The avatar I use, I just like the messy hair. I have long ago gotten bored with regular composition and stuff.
http://gingerSnap.smugmug.com/photos/5507055-S.jpg
This is just about a month ago, but it is flattering, believe me it is, and I don't know why. But I do love the breezes near the water in SC, this is the same time as the avatar. I got some good photos that day. And heard some good music. I am standing on a long dock, the place where the music is, it is to my left. (The dog chewed my other glasses, they are "repaired" except for some teeth marks on the lens, so I am waiting to see if I can see anyway with them on.)

This is a classis photographer pose, but it doesn't show "you", sure shows the camera and who made it. It does look official, though. Nothing off in the composition. Makes you look "for real". I might put that on my business cards, or such, for CEO types, lol.
http://www.chewyphoto.com/photos/5475641-S.jpg
I like the top one. It does make you look younger than, say, the bottom one, so it really depends on the message you are trying to put across. g

Did you stop drinking after your Chinese "white lightning" experience? Haha...
I dont drink & the photograph can't show that the other 3 have consumed several bottles of 'rough red' & a few stubbies & were getting quite pissy. I had to balance the camera on my bike helmet & they were laughing at me as all the shots were on an angle.
Im always the 1st target when they start getting pissed & i am still a target for their amusement several hours later.

I reckon I'd vote for these two. I like the camera shot a lot, except that your one eye doesn't look very friendly, it's kinda intense. First one's very friendly, and is what I imagine you to be like.

Andy,
I'm gonna buck the trend and say the street shot is more representative of
who you are as a photographer. I might be wrong but that one seems more
natural to me.
I gave it a quick crop. Sort of an idea for making it your own.

I think most camers have a timer, and you could set the camera on a table. Place an object where you think your head wil be and focus on that. Then it's a matter of trial and error. Press button, run in front of camres, smile, check photo, repeat.

Nice picture, I like the DOF too, to me this shot says something about the Armed Forces/War/ the world we live in.... the expression on your face works well with the style of photo too.

I would sure hate to ask for another poll, or opinion, though why not, I don't know. But I would sure like to put one in the Challenge. Somehow I think I should stick with the "green" shot of the marsh and cat tail..........

I always said that I took so many photos of myself, because I was always with me. Haven't taken as many lately. Not that I have not been with me anymore, just don't look as good, or something.
g
I did get a really good photo on my Deers Card (med insurance, my husband is retired navy). Got the card on Monday, when I went to get it the first time, I washed my hair, thought of what to wear to be photographed, etc. Couldn't get the card, paperwork, so we had to go back to get it Monday, I was a mess.
What I did, I put lipstick on, for women, and messed my hair up. It is so mussed it looks good..............and it was terrible. Best photo I have had taken in years.
Unless you have raised your prices Thomas, it would be fun to see your set up and get my photo taken, smile. Again.

I've been taking a few self portraits lately, mainly cause I want to play with lighting etc but very few people I know are willing to have their photo taken. I always find that in photos of myself I want to go real extreme with photoshop, compared to the natural way I like to leave others. I think its because in photographing other people I want to show something beautiful about them, whereas in photographing myself I want to show something about how I feel.

It's my "Say what?" pose. My sons claim to be quite familiar with it.
Hah, I can see you say it... Lovely portrait. I like how sharp it is...

Here is a shot of me and my clan. Y'all may recognize some of the kids. They tend to be my "test" models. This was my first attempt at a beach family portrait. Pretty tough to set up with all those kids :D . This is actually a composite of two photos because I couldn't get one with the whole gang actually looking at the camera.

You guys are missing the point. There's something special about taking your own portrait (self-portrait). Anybody can take a photo of you, but only you can do the hard bit about choosing how you want to be shown and editing the image. It's not that we don't want to see your handsome visages, but that we want YOU to take them yourselves.

Hi Fish,
Yeah, that was me in the avatar, but it was done with an artistic effect filter, cutout, I think. Anyway, it was not a "true to life" image. It just had blocks of color. I made a new avatar with my first "in the mirror" shots. Camera covered my face, but it was a natural, unretouched picture. These last two are natural photos with gausian blur used on the background. Taken in natural window light, by me, and I confess to the use of a little bit of healing tool. That big smile causes more crows feet than I can bear to look at. Smile. (Darn, I just got a new firewall program and it's not letting my smilies work.) Aaaak, new programs make me scream. So anyway, now you know what I look like, really.
Mmmm, the corned beef sounds great. Glad you liked the meatballs too. I made a big pot of chili last week. Had to put some in the freezer, there was so much. This weather has really been making me crave comfort food. I also made beef stew the week before last. Oh yeah, and I made 15 bean soup with ham recently too. I put a can of diced tomatoes and chopped carrots in that. Have you tried that? Very good! I didn't make anything good this weekend. We went out to dinner on Sat.

Hi Sid,
Thanks for the picture. I'll have to confess that after all the teasing back and forth, I still didn't believe that was you. In any case, your face is still covered with shaving cream.
