View Full Version : Assignment #5: Tilted
Nikolai
Sep-02-2006, 11:25 AM
Well, it's a Labor Day weekend here in US and everybody can still do some hard work at least shooting the Stones (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41266), if not breaking or moving them :-)
A new weekend, however, also means a new assignment, and this time we gonna get tilted.
It's been often noted that the pictures taken at a strong angle can bring something fresh to an otherwise "beaten" view. And when I say "strong" I don't mean a basically poor job done with the horizon skewed by 2-3 degrees. Instead I'm talking bold, intentional large angles in the vicinity of 30..45..60 degrees.
As before (and hopefully always:-) in these classes, you don't need to be shy if your image is not worthy of the front page of Smithsonian or Time. The idea is to try and comply with the primary theme.
Moderate post-processing is welcomed, just don't go crazy.
You are also allowed to change your angle in the post, although the idea of this assignment is to tilt your camera, not your document.
If nothing else, all existing photo-editors only allow you to rotate your image in two dimensions (parallel to the sensor plane), while your camera can use the all the advantages of our three-dimensional world (let's forget about time for now:-). This vertical tilt can create an interesting 'convergence" effect, especially if you're using a wide-angle rectilinear lens.
For the sake of the class to keep ourselves on our photo taking toes, as usual please submit freshly taken pictures only.
OK, let's get tilted! :D

No need to erase. I was planning to post a few oldies myself ("one picture worth a thousand..."- leaves me wishing we get paid at this rate with every shutter click of our cameras:-), but you saved me the trouble:-)

Thanks, man!
I used Michiel de Brieder's 10mm Belorussian-made fish-eye lens for this shot. Since my 30D is x1.6 APC, it's cropped on the sides.
I still hope to save for a FF camera (like 5D) at some point :-)

Ok I cheated with this one and tilted in PS. But out of all the shots I took today at car show my tilted GT was by far one of my favorites and I wish I tilted the camera more while I was out, I didnt find out about the challenge till after I got back. Im planning on going to a different car show tomorrow and Ill be tilting my camera alot to see what I can come up with.

I agree, GT shot is far superiour :-)
Oh well, the assignment has just started. Sorry for the late notice :-)
Probably I should switch with announcing on Fridays, so we can shoot the whole weekend. OTOH, you have the whole week to think of it and the next weekend to actually shoot it.
What do you think, guys? What is the best day of week to start a new topic? :scratch

Nikolai,
I really like the chairs, but i did not want to capture them like i would normally take a photo. I wanted to try something different. I took this shot a few weeks ago. I also wanted it to be different because of the shape of the chairs. Hope this makes sense.
The tilt is subtle, that's me trying something different but not going all the way:): . BTW, thank you

I guess cars are very grateful objects for this kind of assignment:-):):
It's also possible to start making some conclusions, like:
the more aggressive the tilt is, the bolder car looks (to me, at least)
with the tilt you may get some nice reflections
Note 1: proper polarizer is always good when working with highly reflective surfaces, such as cars' clear coat finish, chrome and glass
Note 2: we need to watch for our own reflection, since in most cases we don't want it to be there
Note 3: we need to watch in general for WHAT is reflecting
Low vantage point tilt is very different from the high vantage point one.Just my observations, purely MHO, YMMV, etc.

How does this work for tilted
It's surely tilted and angled, so it fits alright.
However, maybe because it's kinda normal to view those types of things from this angle and "up close", it does not strike as a "novelty item", you know what I mean? :dunno
Let's get another tilt, we still have time:-) :thumb

Both your entries (day and night) are tilted, but I cannot help noticing to awesome quality of the second image.
On first one the tilt didn't help much (if at all), which is perfectly OK, since we're learning where what works.
But on a second one you nailed it, and I think the tilt was exactly what doctor ordered!:thumb

I've been lurking around here for a while and when I shot this, I thought of the "tilted" assignment. I know I'm *really* late on this, but hope it's not TOO late. (I took the shot 2 weeks ago.)
Now, there's one thing you have to understand about me.... I don't really like tilted photos 99% of the time. Why? I feel it's just something that many people are doing to try to make their photos more interesting. And it often doesn't help. :rolleyes
In this case, I shot the photo tilted because I was way too close with my prime 50mm lens - and unfortunately cropped the bottom of her heel too close. :doh
Anyway, I'd love to get some honest feedback on whether or not this works. Sure, I could put this on the "whipping post", but I'm not sure it's worth it for this photo... (I know it's good, but don't think it's great...)
Thanks!

Why not ?
As a matter of fact the lens was at 16*1,6 mm and I could not be more back than I was.
May be I' ll get a wider lens someday ... :dunno

One of the reasons - everything should have some reason, however subtle or personal this reason can be.
The reason of extreme tilit is - usually - to give some uniquess and novelty to an otherwise well-familiar and possibly dull/boring subject.
In your case it's an *Indian Palace*. :deal :huh
For all us westerners it's as exhotic as it gets all by itself. You had us at hello, no need to jump over one's head with strong tilts...
As I said, it's a valid entry, but from a purely photographic standpoint effect does not work for me :dunno

I like the #2. It's both a valid entry and a nice shot (albeit light is rather harsh). #1 is not so much either...:dunno

Yeah this particular shot has been through a lot. I keep making the fuile size smaller everytime I post it and this time i was able to make it bigger. Needles to say, it looks grainy now. O well, we're not supposed to be perfect here right? I'm actually sending in some shots that are just for fun. I thought that was the point here. If not, I'll start sending in better ones.

Well, it's definitely not the level of the LPS, but other than that the idea is to grow in all senses, not just getting subject, composition or WB right...:deal
So, by all means, please, send better ones..:-) :clap

I was trying to figure and interesting way to shoot this railing, then I remembered this assignment...so I tilted the camera a bit and got this.

BTW, tilt is usually harder to pull on the headshots, esp. pets, so you might as well try it on some more tiltable subjects first :deal

I can see your point, here. Had it been a fast moving sports car shot at a rakish angle while it rounded a sharp curve on a hill, it'd be different. But this one does look kind of like the shutter opened just as I'd dropped the camera. . . . Which, I assure you, was not the case. :rofl
I'll try again soon. :D

We had a break in rain so I took my lil one out today and snapped some pics for another challenge on a completely different board. I remembered reading about this challenge last night and snapped this crazy angle. As she was laughing her head off. I haven't shot like this before but I think it has some potential for future shots.

I like BW idea, but since you fond of the gree, why don't you try duotone with that green as a primary color? And try different channels as a source, you mught be surprised how cool it may look in any of the C, M, Y, R or B. BW adjustment layer in CS3+ is the tool to go. :deal

Tilting at a train (not a tilt train):
Ah, a classic! Good one! :thumb
But next time just tilt a bit more, so the roof if totally vertical, and let it fill the frame (maybe in post) a tad more, so you have that great convergence.
And what would be the absolute ultimate is a blend of short and long exposures, having the front sharp and the rest blurred. It's actually NOT very hard to achieve: have your camera on a tripod, manual focus, shutter priority. Focus, frame (on the previous trains). Set a short exposure time, probable continuous drive and try to catch the face. Now you have a few seonds while the rest of the train is passing by to switch shutter speed way low (40D/50D user settings are usually a life saver in this case, since it's one easy flick, but a fast knob operation would do the trick, too) and hit the shutter again.

I agree. More of a tilt would have improved the shot. I kind of like the expanse of sky though. Kind of gives the shot a certain feeling... a sense of solitude maybe?
This was a passing shot I took as I was walking. I happened to look up and remembered the Tilt assignment so I snap a shot. Need to remind myself to take more shots instead of less... not like I need to preserve film or anything.
Here's another shot I just took... better?
