I just love the Dog A Day thread! However, I have 2 beautiful cats as pets (no room for a dog just yet) and am starting a thread to compliment the Dog A Day thread. I searched, and there's nothing of the sort already (unless I missed it, sorry!)

So - have at it! Post your pics of your favorite feline friends :D

I have a cat, too. She really suffers from lack of attention with two big dogs in the house. Fortunately, she was happy to help me test out my new lens!

yeah, I think I needed them much more than they needed me though.

Here's Sombra --- she was just 6 weeks old when she washed up in my back yard during an out-of-sorts rainstorm in May last year. We have lots of ferral cats in the complex, and lots of nasty little kittens. I saved this one, only b/c she was so tired and hurt she let me get near her. I fostered her, and my Sasha and Chloe helped teach her lots of cool kitty things (like drinking from the water dish, what cuddles are, how to play nice and not bite). She's now living with a grandmother/granddaughter pair somewhere in Tucson, and I heard she's doing good.

Someday, when I have a house with a spare room...I'll probably foster kittens, it was very rewarding.

First night, feeding time while getting warm.

Those two are so cute! I take the cat and dog pictures for my local shelter (http://parmashelter.org/index.html), so I love to hear stories about rescued pets. There are days at the shelter when it is SOOO hard not to come home with a new pet!

beautiful eyes! Though, I will have to say that he's not a true Russian Blue --- they have green eyes. And looking at his coat, looks like some brown overtones and very very faint blackish/dark striping (in your other photo). RB coats look gray with blue overtones if in the right light. So, I don't think he's a Russian Blue, though one of his parents might have been :) If he does have RB in him, he will be a real gentle cuddle-bug just waiting for your approval and attention...so sweet! My sister had a brother-sister pair of Blue Russians and they were incredibly soft and very very sweet.

Thanks for keeping the thread alive!

It's so awesome you saved him from certain death!

geez, love those dark amber eyes!!!!

I think you are right. He does have dark striping but it is pretty faint. I'm sure he is not a pure bred but I think he at least has some in him. His previous owners adopted him from the Chicago ASPCA so he was probably a stray or mistreated. Then they adopted him and were going to put him down. Makes no sense. But now he has a good home. He is always by my side and is a great cuddler. Now if he and Molly would just get along it will be a great situation for us all. I still haven't picked out a name yet.

I'll keep that in mind. I am horrible at naming pets. So far my friends have suggested Ashtray and McQuarters (formerly of the Bears). I don't think they are trying to hard to help me though because I am currently trying to quit smoking and I hate McQuarters with a passion.

Here's Samara. She's an incredibly patient cat with our 14.5 month old. I can't believe what she puts up with without running away. They really love playing together. Gareth even pulls the stick around for her to chase.

http://chrisandjoy.smugmug.com/photos/98515963-L.jpg

She also really enjoys chasing her tail in difficult places (like the handlebars of the stroller). Only a couple of months old here, she's about 1-year old herself now.

This is our cat, Claus. He is also a rescue... and I love him so much! He has gotten fat, I assume it is because he knows nothing really as his mother had little to no impact on him. He is purely an inside cat (declawed) and is not very active I am afraid.

Ahh, a special thread for us kittie-lovers! I like that! :D
Great images here!

Here is our little hero. Once, we had a pair of mice as pets. One day, one of the escaped and we couldn't get it out from under the kitchen cupboard. Over three days, we tried everything we could think of.

In our despair we though, we should give the pro a chance. It was crazy! We opened the kitchen door, kitty rushed in, dove under the cupboard and came back one second later with the mouse in his mouth.
And then he placed it carefully into my outstretched hand! (The mouse was unharmed...)

I'm glad to see that your daughter does read - with kitty snuggled up like that, she must be enjoying the book.

Thanks Al and Gus. Yoda (the cat) is a girl so you can even call her pretty and she won't be offended. She got her name because of her resemblance to the "real" Yoda when she was tiny. She is a wise, even-tempered kitty who is a good balance to her more tempestuous, alpha sister, Princess Leia.

Gus, I love the photo of your daugher with the Devon Rex. The two sets of eyes looking at the photographer with cool, feline detachment made me smile.

Since we lost our Tiggee we've not been able to bring ourselves to get another kitty. However, it would appear that one has got us - or at least part-time! Meet Little Ginger This little critter makes itself quite at home in OUR home..comes and goes as he pleases - uses Tiggee's old cat flap - and is quite happy to plonk itself wherever. He gets fed, watered and cuddled as and when he pleases - no news there where cats are concerned. The really weird thing is the uncanny resemblence to Tiggee - he even sits by Tig's grave - spookie.. I'm convinced Ginger is Tigs in a new life!

Angelo, the shadowdane links are a riot.

Gus, I'm not even going to ask how "splodge" got it's name....

Adrienne, SMASHING idea for the thread!

Now our contribution... Our favorite model, here posing for me to experiment with my (then brand new) 20D:

http://cabbey.smugmug.com/photos/32950654-M.jpg (http://cabbey.smugmug.com/photos/32950654-O.jpg)

and here... kickin' it in her 'crib':

http://cabbey.smugmug.com/photos/32951103-M.jpg (http://cabbey.smugmug.com/photos/32951103-O.jpg)

(I've used both of those as examples of what the 20D can do, they link to the originals, check out the detail on the whiskers! I love this camera.)

And finally, in her All Hallow's Eve costume as Darth-Kitty (links to her own gallery):
http://cabbey.smugmug.com/photos/40327363-S.jpg (http://cabbey.smugmug.com/gallery/890044/1/40327363)

Now if only I could find the shot of her as a kitten atop the chair trying to intimidate a full grown yellow lab....

My friends just got their first kitten, they already have an older cat. I don't know how you can deal with three of them, their one is enough. He likes to run around and chase nothing at night, or chew on your hair. Here's a different friends cat, Sake. He is a rescue that had a broken leg and was going to be put down.

This is Lily, a kitty we rescued from our backyard during a heavy thunderstorm. We heard kitten screaming/wailing and when my wife went to check it out, Lily ran UP my wife and snuggled in her arms. I knew right then my opinion meant nothing, and we now had a new familiy member. She was wet, muddy, and COVERED in fleas. That was about two weeks ago, and here she is today after a hefty vet bill and lots of TLC.

Of course, she can laugh about the whole situation now...

This is Halo just after we brought him home from the shelter. My 14 year old is taking spanish, so I thought it'd be cool if he could pick out a spanish word for "shadow" or "cloud" (it was a grey, cloudy day that day) to give some variations on the typical name for a grey cat. He told me he found "halo"; later I asked him about it a bit more and rechecking his spanish-english dictionary, the cloud halo referred to was "under the cloud of suspicion". This little kitten is frequently under that cloud :rofl (particularly when asking who's disturbing the older cat or where did my pencil go?)

'Tilla endured a fifteen minute attack on his neck by Peanut (at about six weeks, here), and he never opened an eye. When Peanut's energy waned, 'Tilla officially ended her onslaught by holding her down. This event earned him the nickname; "Uncle 'Tilla."

Ooh, no posts today... I'll play! First up is our ocicat Tsarina. She was rescued from a breeder who died. After clearing out all the breeder's "good" stock, they found the less-than-perfect ones abandoned and neglected in the attic. Tsarina was up there because of her white chin, which she obviously doesn't think is a flaw. I need to get some pics that show off her spots.

http://TheBoneyard.smugmug.com/photos/299287973_pwCkL-L.jpg

We also have Mab the meezer. She's a rescue also, but we have no idea what her story is. My wife and I sometimes refer to her as "cat-alite" because she's always orbiting our feet.

He hopped a plane from the west coast to join me in my home on the east coast a couple years ago. :D

I was not a cat person until I met Dominic, Mackie for short and Mao for really short. Abandoned by the Dominican family who moved and left him behind, he was taken in by my family and named Dominic. There are 4 kids in the house, and he's been stepped on, pulled by his tail, squeezed, sat on, all sorts of indignities and he's never ever even bared his claws. He is a little paragon of patience even though he's up there in years, or we think he is anyway. He's been with us for 13 years.

I'm not really an animal person, but my gf is. We now have a cat living with us that used to be hers a few years ago. He's a black guy, with some red in him when the sun shines on him. He's also turning grey (He's turning 12 soon). I have to admit that, when he doesn't pee on the floor or puke on the couch, he's not that bad.

I am so sorry, it is never easy to lose a pet, much less a heart pet. There are some pets that just go beyond "Pet", may Chuck be playing and chasing catnip mice at the Rainbow bridge.

Condolences,

I was aiming for a window light shot of my cat Skittles who was checking out the outside world from the back rest of our couch. I guess during his five years of living with a shutter bug, he got quite bored with being photographed... (this is a yawn. He's not, as my friend suspected, singing opera :D)

I really like this shot, gotta check whether I can fix some of the blown out fur in RAW.

Dogs have a thread; hey, why not cats?:scratch :D

Stars seemed to be an inveterate ham for his first 3 years here- if I was watching, he was hamming, especially if I had the camera on him.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn261/chironga/climbing.jpg

He loved to catch things I tossed- snowballs, pieces of corncob...

http://i42.tinypic.com/243gcvm.jpg

He does not like rodents.

http://i634.photobucket.com/albums/uu64/chironga2/ss5.jpg

Susie also doesn't like rodents.

http://i634.photobucket.com/albums/uu64/chironga2/susiehole.jpg

People seem to dump cats near my across-the-road neighbor- they've got some cows and a barn. Their cats just say no to new cats, who seem to find their way here. Susie moved in last summer and quickly decided she owned the place.

http://i634.photobucket.com/albums/uu64/chironga2/susieq.jpg

Stars loves other cats - except for one, The Archenemy, but he's the honcho here and began giving her lessons in comportment.

http://i634.photobucket.com/albums/uu64/chironga2/ss4.jpg

They're good friends and sometimes hang out together when I'm not with them.

Looks like a puma. A fierce puma.
I've had continuous cats for years so the feeling of void is lessened but the heart-wrench of loss is pretty much the same, I guess.

I never saw Baerlein fierce (but he kept me rodent-free for 17 years - his last year was in retirement, and Stars took over - so he probably looked pretty fierce to mice) but he sometimes got angry when he told me it was time for food and I tried to play with him instead of feeding him.

She has gone from being a feral cat to a lap cat in a short period of time. To our surprise, and delight, she is totally NON destructive in the house - only using her scratching post, not furniture or curtains, for entertainment.

She also serves as a lighting stand-in model on a regular basis. Doesn't she look THRILLED?:rofl
