View Full Version : Assignment #4: Stone

Shooters, rejoice! :-)
Number Three (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=40761) turned out to be our best class ever (given we had three of them only, but who counts :-), with a lot of neat ideas, some really great entries and many new and old participants.
It really set a bar rather high. Let's see if we can raise it with our new subject: stone.
As before, the idea is to produce an image that would - unambiguously - deliver the subject (stone, in this case) as its primary target.
Fresh pictures only, please (few days off is fine), remember the mantra: "go and shoot!"
Moderate post processing is OK, but no "smoke cloning", you know what I mean..:-) :wink
Or, at least, do it in a way that nobody would call you on it...:rofl
OK, let's get stoned!:thumb

I shot this a couple of weeks ago at a place called "tent rocks'. This was taken in a slot canyon in the area.
http://tomsprophoto.smugmug.com/photos/90877883-L.jpg
BTW - I used my demo version of Capture NX to bring out the colors from the original RAW file. Really like the software - I never could get the hang of PS.

What area are those "tent rocks" are residing?
Now, to make it more fun, do you think you can try to get us some fresh stones? ("isle four, customer needs assistance..." :rofl :-) :wink

The area is about an hour drive north of Albuquerque.
I will see if I can find some NEW rocks to shoot. :doh

You sure know your 'stone' and how to shoot it.:clap
I especially like #3. Perhaps a bit of adjustment would make the door and stone floor pop.

Ok, shot some stones. I like how smaller stones are part of something bigger. Am on the lookout this week for great stone shots. Too bad I didn't take shots of my buddies in the 70's...LOL :rofl

I'm very glad you like the idea, and the entries are all wonderful pictures... But allow me to reiterate (I highlight the key words):
...
the idea is to produce an image that would - unambiguously - deliver the subject (stone, in this case) as its primary target.
...
Thus far most of the entries, while definitely being nice pictures having some stony subjects, were not concentrating on the stone as their main goals.
We need "da stone". Not the man, not the clock, not the cat, not the door, not the lake... You picture must cry "stone".
As before, I suggest you ask some of your not-too-much-into-photo friends and relatives what could be the title of the picture (no cheating, like "does it remind you of a stone" :wink ;-).
If the title carries something like "rock" or "stone" (or any other related names) - you're in :-)
I know, it's harder than taking a picture with a stone in it, but this is what the assignments are for. No need to rush. Soak the idea of the stone into your brain. Look. Look harder. Become a stone, imagine what it feels like to be one...
All in all, as it's been said in the very beginning, let's get stoned! :rofl

I know, it's not gonna get any prime spots at Getty, but - hey:
it's a stone, and, being in a corner, it deserves a proud name of a

You continue to amaze with each new series of yours! :clap
No, I don't think you should've cut the truck out. It's pretty obvious what is your point (not the truck :rofl ) and it creates such a nice visual scale.
I also like how you get that single "uneven" rock to be a "center" of your composition in #4.
Great entries, thank you very much! :thumb

It's a stone. Stones usually have textures. It's kinda hard to get one without getting the other :dunno
I'd say: instead of worrying about Doug's stones why don't you bring some more of yours to the plate, your area seem to have plenty... :wink

Yes, stones usually have textures.

I googled 'stone' and top listing is "1 stone = 6.35029318 kilograms"
So should I shoot something that is 14 pounds? Does that include something that cost 14 pounds?
If I shoot something 28 pounds would that be something that is too stoned?
If I shoot pebbles, wouldn't Fred and Wilma get mad? (flintstones grin)
Help, Lamar
:rofl
Stone (weight)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_(weight)#column-one), search (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_(weight)#searchInput)
The stone is a unit of weight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weight) and mass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass). It is part of the Imperial system of weights and measures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_unit) used in the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom), and formerly used in Ireland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland) and most Commonwealth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations) countries. It is equal to 14 pounds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pound_%28mass%29) avoirdupois (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avoirdupois), or 6.35029318 kilograms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilogram). Eight stone make a hundredweight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundredweight) in the Imperial system. The plural form of stone is usually also stone, though stones is sometimes used. The abbreviation is st.
Though no longer an official unit of measure—kilograms are used in medical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medicine) and other technical contexts—the stone remains almost universal as a means of expressing human body weight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_weight) in the UK and Ireland. People in these countries normally describe themselves as weighing, for example, "11 stone 4" (11 stone and 4 pounds), rather than "158 pounds" (the conventional way of expressing the same weight in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) and Canada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada)). Stones may also be used to express body weight in casual contexts in other Commonwealth countries.
The stone was also frequently used in the past for weighing agricultural commodities. Potatoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato), for example, were traditionally sold in stones and half-stones (14-pound and 7-pound quantities).
Equivalents
1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.350 kilograms
2 stone = 28 pounds = 12.700 kilograms
3 stone = 42 pounds = 19.051 kilograms
4 stone = 56 pounds = 25.401 kilograms
5 stone = 70 pounds = 31.751 kilograms
6 stone = 84 pounds = 38.102 kilograms
7 stone = 98 pounds = 44.452 kilograms
8 stone = 112 pounds = 50.802 kilograms
9 stone = 126 pounds = 57.152 kilograms
10 stone = 140 pounds = 63.503 kilograms
11 stone = 154 pounds = 69.853 kilograms
12 stone = 168 pounds = 76.204 kilograms[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Stone_%28weight%29&action=edit§ion=2)]
In popular culture
In Ultima Underworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_Underworld), Ultima Online (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_Online), and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcanum:_Of_Steamworks_and_Magick_Obscura), stones are used to measure the weight of the player's inventory.
Everquest 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everquest_2) also uses stone as a weight measurement, although they do not mention this directly in the player's inventory.
In World Wrestling Entertainment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wrestling_Entertainment), the weight of the Highlanders (a tag team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_team) from Scotland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland)) is annouced in stones. I think they all fit nicely :-)
Now, do you think you can introduce some new "angle" with those stones?
These are pretty much "flat in your face", just like any tourist would do. You, OTOH (on the other hand), as a local, can probably bring up something from the same stones that a wandering tourist simply would not notice (or would not know how/where/when to look).
I'm sure you can do that! :wink

#1 A stone statue (clearly not the 'essence' of 'stone' though)
http://tonymcguiness.smugmug.com/photos/170858160-L.jpg
#2 A stone levy (a bit closer, I suppose)
http://tonymcguiness.smugmug.com/photos/170858434-L.jpg
#3 And finally, nothing but...
http://tonymcguiness.smugmug.com/photos/170858401-L.jpg
I found it rather tough to pull anything dramatic out of a stone on an overcast (typical) Nortwest day. I definitely will go back to this one considering the heady-ness of a subject like stone.

sorry, man, don't remember, I don't have the PSD with me. :dunno
I think it was a simple combo of channel-based Curves and Black-and-White adjustment layers. I wouldn't spend more than a couple of minutes on it, and I remember it was a complete improv. :rolleyes

Here's my contribution to this assignment. I'm getting started a little late as I have been on Vaca and I'm planning a wedding. This was taken at the lake near my house this past weekend. feedback is appreciated!
I'm very happy that you're catching up, but I'd suggest to start with the most active subjects and only then do the post-mortem:-)
On this particular image: it's very difficult to provide any sensible C&C on a post-stamp size image. :deal Got a larger version? :wink

Here is a stone within a stone. i'm not sure if this is natural or if the triangular piece just managed to get wedged in there during tumbling.

I hope it is OK that I am working through these old assignments. I try shoot something everyday and these old assignments are great inspiration. This one in particular was great because I have had this stone in my back yard forever, but never really thought about shooting it. I am really glad I did, it has some great color and texture.

I wish I could have shown scale better. This rock wall would have impressed even the ancient Hawaiian builders. ~2-3 yrs. old, it's around 50' high! Big stones at bottom are 6'-7'.
C&C appreciated. I masked the blown out sky and dropped in a properly exposed one.

It's a good one... My only concern is you "the other day" comment... Did you took this shot (and other ones from this series) with this class theme in mind?

Yes, I did. In fact, it had been over ten years since I had visited this park but I went back (with my young grandson) three times in the past two weeks with this assignment in mind. I remembered those rocks! And I borrowed a wide angle lens from one of my sons to help me get some of those shots. The 24-105 L lens just isn't wide enough.
I already had some photos I thought would work for the stone assignment, but then I "caught" my grandson staring up at the rocks. He had been nervous around the rocks the week before but started "interacting" with them right when it was time to leave. I remembered that people in these stone/rock photos were OK if they contributed to a sense of scale or didn't become the focal point, so I turned my camera back on to see what I would get.
I also took several shots at this park with the vanishing point assignment in mind but not sure yet whether I will use them.
Thanks.

Antonio Correia, In the second shot with the beach behind your stones , seems to have a lot of noise what was your iso/shutter speed setting?
You were fast ...
The ISO was at 50, the lowest in the 5D (old model)
May be a have overdone with clarity. :dunno
To me it is OK.
Thank you for commenting.
BTW: do you like the image ? I myself have some doubts if I really like it. I mean the second one.
The first one is clearly a poor picture because of the light. Or may be it is just me who doesn' t know to "work" the file properly ...:dunno
There are certain pics I clearly like, while others ...:scratch
I forgot to tell you that the speed was 1/200 at f/7.1
And excuse me but this picture was shot with the 20D at the lowest ISO on this camera 100.
And it was shot with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS L USM
I am sorry to be confused because I was using both cameras at the moment.
