Go to your gallery. Look at the photo-tools of this gallery. You'll find an option to 'zoom the thumbnail'. This allows you to create your own thumbnail, which you can configure to be square.

There's also a hack for bulk zoom thumbnails that works wonderfully, if you are a Power or Pro user:

Otherwise, you need to do it one photo at a time.

You need to carefully read the instructions for the bulk zoom hack. There is CSS code, javascript code, and header/footer code. All of the code is in the first post in the thread I gave you above.
