View Full Version : Assignment# 3: 3

Nikolai
Aug-19-2006, 06:45 PM
The One (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=40191) turned out to be difficult. Let's see if getting Three would be any easier/harder. :D

The goal is to deliver the idea of three (without cloning, erasing or manually coloring, naturally).

Father, Son and Spirit. RGB. Triplets. Ménage à trois. Three colors. Three trees. Triple fork. Pair of threes (although this is something more like two, ain't it ?:-).

Anyway, same basic rules: go and shoot.
Fresh pics only, please.
PS as your heart desires, but no cheating :-)

Good luck, everybody! :thumb

Man... I so miss my camera. I've missed assignment one, two and I'm now going to miss three. Which makes three, but in words. Hopefully the camera will return to me in the next week, so I get to participate!

Antonio Correia
Aug-20-2006, 08:58 AM
As usual, by the end of the week = sunday.
But waite a little until Nikolai - our teacher, expert and the one with this ideia and initiative - tell you about it.

Hey Nikolai, I'm right, am I not ?

Salut

Hey Nikolai, I'm right, am I not ?

Salut

Pretty much!
It's simply that
a) there no no prizes
b) next weekend there will be another one, and so on.

If anyone feels compelled to post in any old one - please do so (I can't lock the old ones anyway:-), but I'd suggest you spend your bandwidth on the most recent task :-)

Cheers! :1drink

It's funny how three is easier than one, no?

I remember something from the shootout to the extent of
"If it's one - it's done, if it's many - it's none",
referring to the rules of composition and usual - unfortunate - overcrowdness of the nowadays snapshots.

Oh well, let's proceed with three this week :):

Cheers! :1drink

Oops ... the weird-looking whitish rim at the bottom is part of the fence. Bad cropping I'm afraid ... kindly ignore the bottom pixels! Didn't notice when the image was on a white background.

I did a bit of cropping and some considerable sharpening, as the leftmost horse was slightly out-of-focus. The rightmost also is, but that hardly disturbs the composition IHMO.

Even I had a hard time making this one pop. Really should have used a fill flash or gotten them to sit on the other side of the bench. Really neither was an option (didn't have the flash, NO PICTURES).

Still there was a good lesson here. If your subjects are children, buy them ice cream. Can't hardly go wrong with that, can you?

The flash would have destroyed it : you got lucky not to have it.

The one little default of this picture is the cutted hand on the bottom...

I appreciate and share your enthusiasm, but I honestly think it's too early to call it any names. Once we manage to pass some "important" threshold, like at least 10 (mind you, as a programmer I'm using a hexadecimal notation, so it's 1610 :-) - then let's pop the beer or a bottle of un vieille veuve:wink and have some celebration:-)

In the mean time - I want to see everybody's threes!!

(sorry for the "damn" thing, I just think this word is so cool :D )
No photoshop trick- the raindrops were in a spiders web between the rungs of a ladder I simply placed a flower on the lower rung and photographed the refracted image of the flower in the drops. The only trick is that the image was focus stacked from 2 shots of the same subjects- one shot was with the drops in focus (well nearly) and the refracted image very slightly OOF and the other shot was vice versa (ie the drops slightly OOF and the refracted image in focus). Should add this only works well with drops about 2mm in dia or smaller as larger drops distort the refracted image too much. If you are lucky or are more careful where you place the object to be refracted you can sometimes get the distances/ focal length of the drops to match and get both the drop and the refracted image both in focus in one shot.

I was thinking about this assignment a bit trying to come up with something, and I kept coming back to number keys. The problem is I couldn't figure out how to get "focus" on just three keys. Then I remembered having some old keyboards that I could pop the keys off of and not worry about it. Once I got the keys off I realized that they were clear...so then I figured out how I could light them from behind. :)

A bit of C&C for you (and I still owe you a big one on your Ophelia post:-):

2) One of the things when using a window lighting is NOT to include the window in the frame, at least by much...

I meant for it to be blue! I like windows though. They offer a geometric dynamic to a picture... but I hear you. I was also trying new things... I had them up on a chair first and then in the hall and then on a rail. The window fit the best, particularly that one. They saw a lot of windows that day. The stupid red calvary buildings kept being in the background though.
I should have taken them to the relflection pool. I'll try it next time I'm trapped by a flood.

Well, to be honest, it's a bit of a stretch. We need a bolder concept of a three. Think billboard on a side of a buyse highway for a company that is interested in threes. A driver has less than a second to look at your picture and figure out what it is and if s/he is interested in that at all. It tok me about 30 seconds and your entire post to figure what it is and why it's even relevant... :dunno

Since this thread seems to be alive, I'll jump in. ;)

Took this pic Sunday at a great little winery in upstate NY.

Unfortunately I didn't realize until I got home that all the shots I took had white balance set to "incandescent" as I was testing at home the night before and forgot to reset. :( Some of the pics were washed out and awful. I find this one tolerable. I hope you do, too. I'm sure eventually I'll learn how to correct for a poor white balance.

But like this better. YAFP

First one is way too clever for me to figure out where the three is, unless you're playing tree/three wordgame :scratch

Second one is nice though! :thumb

The three bright trees. One on each side of the frame and the third about a third of the way from the left. I did say I was over thinking things. :D I was going to play with the colors and contrast to make the the bright trees stand out more, but decided against it.

Thank you for the entry!
1) clone out the kid
2) clone out the remnants of the sand castle
3) reframe in a way that all three birds are IN the frame, not cut in half by it.
