gee whiz, looking at the list of "current" FR's, I see almost no requests for enhancements to the picture viewing experience... I know I've been a broken record about new features within the current styles... specifically in the Journal style.... and I don't see it listed :cry ...
from 2 FR threads ago, Dec 2005.
Journal Medium/Large (or whatever size I want) plus allow me to select how many pics per gallery page...

I've seen other requests to be able to see comments and add comments to pics while in journal style.

Arrgghh... I thought for sure I had posted this request in the Feature Request forum, but I just found it here (http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=283285&postcount=5)--obviously not in the right place to be picked up.
Request: Please extend the ability to set the default for TRUE color or AUTO color prints to Power Users.
Thanks

I'll second this.. and give power users backprinting or at least something new
Also, a vote for panorama's (since EZ prints does them)
And one more thing, id like to see the navigation buttons on the critique style bigger (as in buttons maybe, not text). I will get around to customizing them at some point, but frankly, i am perpetually having trouble finding them and i know people (like grandparents) that didnt even realize there were more images in the gallery

Clean, table version of the Your Statistics > More Details page as suggested by dortress in http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=361273&postcount=458
Yes, we can add Statcounter and/or Google Analytics, but there's no reason that smugmug can't clean up this page as well.

Not sure how doable this might be, but I know the photo replace feature is one-file-per in a command line fashion. Wouldn't it be possible to take the same idea, but use the Smuggy drag and drop? So when you'd click "replace photo (batch)" it'd bring up the same general watermark/move/delete batch GUI we're used to, the difference being each little thumbnail would be a tiny Smuggy face drag/drop window, with Smuggy replaced by our appropriate thumbnail. Seems like almost all the code is there, just would have to be reworked and each Smuggy instance would have to know where he belonged (to which file) and only allow for one file to be dropped. That certainly would make things a lot easier for batch replace and the new proof delays.
Speaking of the Smuggy drag/drop, I'd also like to see not just the a "View your upload log" and "Return to your gallery" but an echo of the filenames it received, cuz I'm old and sometimes I lose my place. :)

This is something I'd really like to see, and I know it's been previously requested on more than a few occasions, but here's how I envision it realistically.
1) A simple pro user interface, similiar to the pro pricing interface that allows you to add a new package profile and include certain sizes and amounts of prints. It would then show you based on your new package profile, Smugmug's @cost pricing for you and allow you to define a package price for the customer.
2) After you have at least one package profile set, you could add the option to each gallery, or globally (or another neat batch feature, with checkboxes or those neat red/green clicky borders) which would show an icon next to the shopping cart/buy this photo icons when viewing a photo that exists in a gallery where a package purchase is available.
3) With at least one photo added to the package option, the customer could be taken to a variation of the "arrange photos" GUI. Thumbnails of the photos they selected could be shuffled around to fill the available slots to decide how many of each and which size of what.
4) After the package selection is made, it'd be off to the shopping cart as usual, but with those selections automagically inputted at the correct amount and sizes, ready for fine tuning by the customer as to cropping, etc., only instead of price, listing the package profile name, i.e., "Family Package" or "Three 8x10 Package" or whatever the pro user defined.
I know this would increase my sales at least somewhat and make for a far more flexible, more professional environment for our customers.
As a side note, for us portrait and sports photographers, I'd like to eventually see the same type of system used whereas a pro user could upload an image, lets call it a custom template/border/whatever, that may have perhaps COUGARS 2006 and some baseball/football/basketball graphics or whatever, with certain print-sized holes in the template, that could in the same way have photos added to them and ordered/printed as a whole. You get where I'm going with this. Team photos, collages, personal baseball cards, magazine covers, etc. that would require little to no intervention from Smugmug or the printhouse (maybe different printstock?), but... baby steps! :)
Anyhow, hope these ideas are something of a consideration. Thanks for reading, guys! :thumb

"Allow /popular results to show to site owner"
I'm not sure if this is the same thing I'm thinking of, but I'll just make a quick request for it here...
I'd like to be able to see how many thumbs up and thumbs down votes individual photos of mine have had. Also, I would like to be able to see where my photos/galleries are ranked in the daily rankings.

Would love to see a feature to bulk upload replacement files as part of the proof-delay feature. Right now, each file has to be uploaded/replaced individually.

I second the below. I'd also like to see a "PAD" gallery, like Pbase has - a meta-gallery where one can post a pic a day or so for commentary, etc.. to bring it out from the masses and masses of photos uploaded.

Andy (or any of the smugmug crew),
any word on getting that 800, 600, & 400 pixel width option under the digital download section yet? (that way we can still use a watermark on the original file).
Also, as previously mentioned in a prior comment, anyway to get the wording of 'Low Rez" changed to "small rez/ or small size" or something? I've had a few comments from potential customers concerning purchasing "low rez "files ( they believe the wording refers to a low quality file rather than a quality small file ).
Thanks!

Hi JD, thanks for the suggestions. No, no word yet. The feature is very new, give us a some time. I'll be sure that the team sees your request though!
I really did look to see if this was already on the list.... I couldn't find it
Let me opt out of Smugmug's public access features from www.smugmug.com (http://www.smugmug.com)
How about adding Account level settings like these??? (Category, gallery, photo levels later )
Public Smugmug "Search" displays YOUR photos: NO
Public Smugmug "Browse" displays YOUR Categories/Galleries: NO
Public "Map This" displays YOUR photos: NO
Public "Popular Photos" displays YOUR photos: NO
Allow Google/Yahoo/etc crawling (if possible): NO
Allow Search access to your Real First and Last name from your account settings screen: NO (did you know this is intentionally not blocked?)
Lastly... Whenever I create a new gallery, I get all kinds of looky loos who have nothing better to do than browse the Family category for new galleries.... I say NO to this and any other public access features too.
This is all the security I need. hidden in plain sight (without Smugmug's searchlight) Not the same as making galleries private - which ruins the ability to invite someone to my site...
Of course, my keywords would still work.:thumb
a couple of reference links:
Feb 2005 - don't want photos to be public (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=6021)
Smugmug searches your real last name (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?p=307475#post307475)

I'd like to see the IPTC information in the original file get included in the 'smaller' versions that smugmug creates for viewing. it would be just one more level of protection for maintaining copyright to our work.
it would also be nice if the information entered into smugmug (keywords, captions, etc) were entered/added to the appropriate IPTC fields of the original. they would then go with the file as they are downloaded, regardless of how they are acquired.
thanks,
jpbeal.

Bug reporting thread and feature reporting threads were good when smumug was small. But not its all too big. Why not have a bug reporting system or something like bugzilla. Members can put in feature requests or bug reports.
Bugzilla has inbuild bug reporting system, that helps weed out duplicate bugs and feature requests. Lets move away from this

I'd like to be able to assign (or not) guest passwords by gallery. That way I could be sure guests didn't retitle or reorganize galleries they have no business with while giving them effectively free access to certain galleries.
To make this more concrete, suppose I want to have some sort of photofinishing group project or contest with various people working on the same shot and uploading their completed versions to a specific gallery. And suppose this was publicized on the web. It'd be nice to restrict the access.
At a minimum, it be nice to have a gallery option to allow/prohibit guest access.
I read the help pages, and if they are up to date, there doesn't seem to be a good way to do this.

This is a tiny request. In the cropping feature can we have a 7x5 in addition to 5x7. I find myself having to type this in the custom box way to often when uploading family photos where I want the orig on my harddrive so I just edit through SmugMug.

I know this had been addressed and smugmug wants to keep it simple. What about for pros only? Has this been ruled out as a possibility?

While I would love auto rotate on EXIF info, I would rename the current "Rotate Photos" to "Rotate Photos (Bulk)" and add 2 new options: "Rotate Photo Left" and "Rotate Photo Right" under Photo Tools. Reason is that in the current rotate photos page, all you get are thumbnails - for many of my photos its hard to tell which way it should be rotated, and if I can't remember, I'd have to leave the rotate page, go back to find the image, view it at a larger size, then go back and rotate again, a huge pain! (or if after I performed a bulk rotate, and notice later that one is incorrect, it could be adjusted immediately instead of having to go back into bulk rotate.) It would be so much easier to just browse through the photos normally and have rotate as a single image option so I don't lose my place.
Also, maybe on the Bulk Rotate page you can display what the EXIF rotate says, so we can at least see how it should be even if we still have to pick each photo.
Oh, and keywords & search for private and password protected galleries.
Thanks,
Brian

I need to somehow place descriptions over entire Catagory's &/or Sub-C exspecailly for sports photos.
Example Sports -> Softball (with a description) -> then all the galleries.
I'd really like the description to be listed on the page showing all the galleries... above the list of galleries. I'm thinking just adding the ability to put a gallery(s) in a gallery would be really helpful here as it would also enable: An extra catagory/gallery level. A whole new season/school year is beginning today. As it stands right now I'm wondering do I just start adding this years football galleries above last years (causes the sub-c page load time to be longer). Or should I re-name football to football 05/06 and create a new sub-cat titled football 06/07... I'd like to keep my list of sub-c page looking pretty clean and this may clutter it fairly quick. hmmmm decisions, decisions - lol.

Hi Andy & thanks for the quick response. I read the thread but couldn't find links to any pages showing this in action (what I want to see anyhow).
Can you share some links specifically showing this as a workable hack?
EDIT: I'd really like to see this enabled somehow easier (such as the current way of adding gallery descriptions) so I don't have to hack it ;)
Thanks so much,
Andy

I've just started playing with Smugmug - I've been a Printroom user and am looking seriously at switching to SM.
Here's my wishlist (excuse me if any of this is available and I haven't found it yet -- I've done a fair amount of reading in the forums, but possibly not exhaustive):
- framing (simple choices like http://www.dotphoto.com or ideally a more elaborate interface like http://www.pictureframes.com/)
- capability to directly place add-to-cart code on an external site
- e-card support
For the last 2, I'll offer an example. I use Printroom's 'print button' code capability on my web site. I'm generating these galleries with my own software; Printroom lets me inject some simple javascript which results in an clickable add-to-cart for that photo. Here's an example:
http://www.dclundell.net/running/photography/2006-07-15_tahoe_rim_trail_100_miler/scenery-P1000987.jpg_t.html
(The e-card link is a call to some e-card software that i'm running on my domain.)
Thanks much,

Now that we're nearing the release of IE7 and given all the hacks that we have to do for the craptacular IE6, I would really like to see a way to include CSS in conditional comments. Perhaps we could have an advanced option in the CSS places (themes and customization page) that would make browser-specific code blocks available for the user to insert code for specific browsers. By default the user would only see an added advanced button. When that button is clicked tabs would appear that would switch the input box to match whatever tag is selected. The tabs could be "All Browsers", "IE7", and "IE6 and earlier" or something along those lines.
This would simply dump the CSS into a css file that is uniquely named and surrounded by conditional captions. No more * html hack, underline hack, or CSS2.1 hacks required for the users and better code all the way around.

I'm not seeing this feature request listed, so my apologies if I've missed it.
I would like to be able to move multiple selected galleries from one category to another. To be clear, I want to move SOME galleries, not every gallery in a category. Given how many galleries I have, mostly currently categorized as "other", recategorizing each one individually is very time-consuming.
Just to convince myself I'm not alone in hoping for this feature (:D) I believe that this previous post wants the same facility: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=35018
Thanks in advance, I'm enjoying SmugMug more and more as I get to know it! :)

Could we get the Right-Click Protection turned OFF whenever I'm logged in to my site? It makes it really difficult for me to share photos on dgrin or change the wallpaper on my desktop. Basically when I want to do one of those things, I have to change my right-click protection off, do what I want, then go back and turn it back on (IF I remember!)
Thanks

The website only lists in US Dollars, so I need to know what the Australian $ prices are.
If you could let me know that would be great.
Thanks
DannyOne of several I have recieved along a similar vein.
Even just a quick conversion in brackets similar to eBays. ie US$ 100 (about AU$140) would do.
Thanks.

Like the title says,
I'd like to be able to apply a theme to an entire category or subcategory, this way I could have different styles for the different sections of my page. right now I can apply a theme to the whole wesite, or to a specific gallery.
The theme works great for the gallery but I would like to have the containing subcategory have the same 'look'
for example;
this is my main gallery page http://www.jrinaldiphotography.com/Galleries
and this is a gallery http://www.jrinaldiphotography.com/gallery/1215038
no problem there since the customization is global,
however, i also have a subcategory customized for weddings for which I like having a 'white' look
http://www.jrinaldiphotography.com/Events/205403
and here is a sample gallery http://www.jrinaldiphotography.com/gallery/1810909
I was able to implement themes in the gallery with great success but I'm obligated to still specify in my main css section what my weddings subcategory looks like. But, if I could in the subcategory create/edit page, also specify a theme, I could truly harness the power of themes.

Please please fix this. I've lost a lot of sales because people just don't understand that they have to look in specialty prints to find some sizes. What would be so hard about labeling it "Special Sizes" or something that gives a clue about what the distinction is about? Better yet, what about giving us better control about how this is presented? For example, I really just want to sell a handful of different sizes and papers. Why can't this just go on one list, since it would be a small list?
OK, you could make this a lot better with only a very small amount of energy and it's an old problem. Can't you just fix the titles quickly if nothing else?

Automatic use of keywords from XMP data, such as keywords inserted by BreezeBrowser Pro 1.5.2.2, would be useful.

Hi Edurant, do you know if/how these keywords differ from keywords in Adobe Bridge (which we take in automatically)?

I know this was requested more than a year ago (by jfriend) and I'd like to echo it again.
It would be great to have the ability to set a default "starting" gallery style, but still allow the viewer to change it after. I have a specific gallery (A wedding gallery) that I would like to always start in Slideshow mode, but allow the view to change it to whatever the like.

Hi Edurant, do you know if/how these keywords differ from keywords in Adobe Bridge (which we take in automatically)?
Thanks for the quick response, Andy.
The photos were edited from camera JPEGs in Photoshop CS and/or CS2. After that, keywords and various IPTC/XMP data were added to the originals in BB Pro 1.5.2.2. Specifically, the keywords were inserted using the "Keywords" tab "Edit IPTC/XMP Data" option. Then, the EXIF/IPTC/XMP data were cloned from the originals to the edits before uploading the edits to SmugMug.
Here are 2 examples that I just uploaded. The comment on the 2nd one shows the embedded XML with the keywords...
http://edurant.smugmug.com/gallery/1593071/1/90798309
http://edurant.smugmug.com/gallery/1593071/1/90799764/Large#comment
Looking inside the .jpg files uploaded to SmugMug, I see that the keywords are inside an rdf:Description tag with xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/". The keywords themselves are embedded in rdf:li tags which are inside an rdf:Bag, which is inside dc:subject.
This is what BB Pro produces; I'm not sure if it is correct way to embed keywords.
Thanks,
Eric

Perhaps somebody else suggested something like this in the past ... it would be nice to have an option to be able to add our own promo 'flier' with every order sent out, e.g. with some studio info, thank you card or a seasonal promotion. This could be in a separate gallery and added/turned on via the control panel.

The drop area on the Universal Drag & Drop uploader is pretty small compared to the window and it's off at the right-hand side, so I can't just shrink the window around it. This makes it awkward to re-arrange the windows on my monitor so I can easily drag stuff from my cataloging software to the Smuggy.
Would it makes sense to have a miniature pop-up Green Smuggy window?
I just want a small window where I can drop stuff, not much larger than the Smuggy applet, with the name of the destination gallery on it. This way I can open a couple of Smuggy windows to different galleries and sort my pictures into them.
(This is motivated by my workflow. I want choose a picture in the catalog, send it to Photoshop, make my adjustments, save the new image, and drag the image to the Smuggy for uploading. Then start on the next image while that one is uploading. Repeat over and over and over.)
That brings up another problem. Every batch of photos I drop onto the applet apparently starts an independent upload session with a separate tracking window. How about just adding the new batch to the existing queue and putting the progress bar in the smuggy window somewhere?
While I'm on a roll, how about allowing me to change target galleries from the Smuggy uploader window so I can send a few to one gallery, a few to another, and have them all queue up in an orderly fashion one after another?
Thanks for listening!

I think Club Photo had the easiest uploader to use... it was an icon on my desktop. whenever I wanted to upload some pics, I just dragged and dropped them on the icon... I dialog box popped up asking which gallery to put the pics in, or I could create one right there... and that was it. Of course it had a login feature that could remember my password, so it would not ask for that if you don't want it to.
Nothing fancy, it just worked easy.

I would like to see a feature where I can issue someone credits or a coupon toward the purchase of prints. The main reason is so I can pre-sell prints of sporting events.
I am okay with Pre-paying SM for this. Maybe something like this. I get a check/cash for $50 prepay, so the client ensures I get some photos of their child. I then come home and pay SM the $50 I received and issue the client some type of coupon or coupon number (or gift certificate) via email that they can use to buy prints from SM.
I am okay that the gift certificate could be used SM wide. This would just be an easy way from me to take "pre orders".
Thoughts?

Currently to get a copy of a photo into another gallery one must make a 2nd copy of the photo and then move it to the other gallery.
I think two new photo tools commands "Copy Photos" / "Copy Photos (Expert)" should be added to make and move a copy of any photo to a new gallery. The UI could be very similar to the existing Move Photos UI.

How about just adding to the "move photo" page
a check box or button to move a copy or the original.
And please stay on that page and not go to the "moved to" page.

I'd like to have the option to have the overall bandwidth statistics sorted from highest to lowest by overall download bandwidth. Ditto for the image statistics once you have clicked on the gallery stats to view all the image data.
This would allow for us to quickly see which galleries are gathering the largest amount of downloads and catch issues early if some rogue site(s) start linking to particular images.
It may also be useful to be able to sort by "hits" as versus "bandwidth", in descending order.
I don't particularly require that the newest galleries be listed at the top of the statistics page as per how the system now shows gallery stats. If I really want to see what a particular gallery is doing I can always use the browsers' CTRL-F function to search on the galleries name.

Copy to another gallery either as a separate "copy" command or as a combined "move or copy" command is still my top feature request. I have project galleries, and then I have show-off galleries for my favorite stuff. This would make it easier to manage.

In addition to SMUGDATETAKEN can we have a SMUGYEARTAKEN token as well.
This will help greatly in providing the first-year-of-publication for an image's back-print.
E.g.
(c) SMUGYEARTAKEN Anton Spaans --> (c) 2006 Anton Spaans

There are no even prime numbers greater than 2.
And an odd number wouldn't look good at all unless you increased the number of galleries displayed across a page to 3. And in that case only odd multiples of three would look good.
Point is, you won't want a gallery hanging off on the bottom by itself.
Also, I think 4 is enough...the point of featured galleries is to have a few spots you want people to see, but there is always the regular gallery display. If you just toss all your galleries in there, what's the point of featuring any of them?

I've been using JAlbum and have just started switching to smugmug. One of the things I've really liked about JAlbum is that it has a "smart upload" where it only uploads changes to the given gallery/album.
One time this is really helpful is when a connection is lost during the upload - all the uploaded info is retained, so the user only needs to upload remaining changes. Right now, if the Mac uploader fails to upload, the whole gallery needs to be uploaded again, with duplicates.

I like the sales to date info on the control panel but often when I'm away from email (work) and want to check on sales, it can be a pain to try to tell if the total sales have increased and it takes foreeeevvvver to load the sales details (to see the latest sale).
My request would be to have a summary of your "not paid" in the sales summary in addition to the total sales. Would this be tough to add by SM?
Thanks!

One thing that I have not seen that might be nice:
Allow pro users to "set" a default print size/type for each image in a gallery. That way, if a gallery has a plethora of differently-sized images then, when a users puts it in his/her basket, the checkout screen will show that pre-selected print size/type; e.g., hightlighted in red, by default rather than the smallest print size for which the photographer has set prices.

I am using Smugmug (Pro version) for posting online galleries of weddings I shoot. I usually create a new subcategory (under my wedding category) for each wedding I shoot and then add 5-10 galleries covering different parts of the wedding (e.g. The Ceremony, The Bride & Groom, Dinner & Dancing, etc). To maintain my client's privacy I make all of these galleries private and then create a sharegroup containing the galleries. I then email the link for the sharegroup to the client and any of the wedding guests who sign up to receive the link at the wedding.
This is working ok, but not great. When a viewer finishes with one gallery, they have to go all the way back to the sharegroup or click on the original link to the sharegroup since they can't just go up one level (since the galleries are all private, they won't show up).
I understand a lot of users love the sharing aspect of SmugMug, but as a Pro user I do not feel it is right for me to post the images of my clients to websites where anyone could stumble across them through a keyword search on Google. I make almost all of my galleries private for this reason and don't caption my images because I am paranoid the captions would be picked up by a search service (even though the galleries are private). I think it would be great if SmugMug came up with a way to "turn off" the usual SmugMug sharing features for pro users so we can focus on serving our clients and not worry about privacy concerns. I know I saw some discussion on this topic a while back and appreciate that there is only so much SmugMug can do to keep things private when they are posted on a publicly accessible internet site. Even with my current system, someone can still stumble across my galleries by just looking through smugmug gallery numbers, but at least it requires some effort and there is no easy way to search the private galleries.
If there is no way to really do what I am looking for above, then I would welcome some incremental improvements to better organize sharegroups or create a similar feature to simplify the viewing experience for my clients' private galleries. Or maybe I am missing a better way of doing this within SmugMug's current capabilities?
Also, the slideshow feature is very nice when it works, but I have had several clients complain about the speed of the slideshow - images display at inconsistent intervals and sometimes appear to be stuck. This may be due in part to slow internet connections on their end, but I have had trouble with this from time to time with my high-speed cable modem connection. I request better slideshow functionality - maybe a little smaller size to speed the loading time with a crossfade between images? The Shutterfly slideshow function has these features and looks very nice to me. Anything to make the slideshow more aesthetically pleasing and faster to load would be great!
Thanks for continuing to improve this service - the new backprinting option and custom watermark abilities are great!

Hey Smug fam,
I have a feature request that should be pretty easy to achieve. Some of you may know I'm an event photographer. I shoot lots of individual people at one event. Occasionally I have a need to search for images of John Smith from an event gallery and make a separate John Smith gallery. As it is now, when I find images of John Smith, one by one I have to "Make a second copy" of each image, then using the Move tool, go back through 400 photos looking for duplicates, and move those to the new John Smith gallery. Is there an easier way?
What I would LOVE to see is using the same system as the Move tool, a bulk Copy tool. Same function exactly, just one step removed, that being deleting the photo from the original gallery.
This would make things so much easier in setting up personal galleries, compilation galleries to use as a source for our slideshows and portfolios, even subcategories like "Black and White" without having to reupload or pick through our online galleries twice over.
I know your agenda is long long long, so please consider this quickie.
Thanks guys,

http://www.downriverphotography.comYou could tag the photos with keywords that would make it possible to have a virtual gallery for john smith. For example you could tag a photo with event name; john; smith; and then if you went to http://www.downriverphhotography.com/keyword/event%20name-john-smith you'd get all the images of john smith at that event name. I just want to chime in on having better statistics. I've just started to really use my Pro account and noticed that there's no easy way to determine which pictures are being viewed more than others.
Also, the number of graphs is becoming unwieldy.
Also, although it would have no real use, it would be very interesting to be able to tell where in the world my visitors are coming from.
Thanks!

That is a great idea and I'm going to make use of that elsewhere, but for this event situation it's not appropriate. I would have to keyword 400+ photos with 1-10 people in a frame, then either reveal real names, or hide the keywords. I imagine that would be the most thorough way to do things "just in case", but like the proof delay, why retouch 400 photos when you can proof them and retouch the 10 that sell.
Thanks for the idea!

If you click a graph itself (not the header above a graph), you get a page with showing hits for each photo. That at least gives you the per-photo usage within one particular gallery, but not sitewide though.

It would be very nice if:
iff (you are logged in && viewing one of your own galaries that is private && and the image being viewed has keywords set) then instead of not displaying the keywords at all, you printed them as:
Keywords (not used because this is a private gallery): key1 key2 key3.
I'm sure it will help others who run into this, and I'm sure it will help me the next time I forget this little detail.
ALTERNATELY:
On the keyword edit pages (single photo and bulk) a reminder that "while you can set keywords in this gallery, since it is private, they will not be used." Or words to that effect.

I was looking around for a way to bulk edit geography and ran across this thread on the subject (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=16896&highlight=geography).
The basic issue seems to be that if you give a bunch of photos the same location you'll get a bunch of pins on top of one another on Google Maps... which of course is not ideal.
But what is also not ideal is going through 5,000+ photos (and I know I am on the smaller side here based on some of the SM collections i've seen) and giving them locations individually.
On top of that, I have 100s of photos that are basically from the same location anyway. For example, I've got several hundred wedding photos, my sister's graduation, etc... so even if I did all those individually it would still result in the unwanted pin stacking on the map.
So... why not simply assign a location to a SmugMug Gallery instead of individual photos? In this scenario I would just customize a Gallery, say wedding photos, add a location for Google Maps, and be done. That location is not given to each photo, just the gallery. That way if I want to give individual locations to photos I still can.
On Google Maps it shows the thumb for that Gallery and the link takes me to the gallery instead of the individual image.
My guess is that this solution would work for most people who want to bulk edit Google Map locations since there is a tendency to group travel photos in galleries anyway.
Something similar would be grand for Share Groups as well.

I agree with this scenario... I just pick one representative picture from the gallery and set location on it... then the map just shows 1 pin... the viewer could follow that pic to the gallery if they want

I’ve had a few visitors leave gallery comments that obviously were
targeted to a single photo. I think it would be more intuitive if it
read like this below the photo and was a point or two larger:
Replace this:
original size: …….
With this:
photo comments: 4 add photo comment
original size: …….
In the dropdown after clicking “gallery comments”
Replace this:
new gallery comment:
With this:
new gallery comment: (For specific photo comments pick “add photo comments” under picture.)
This probably could be done with a hack but I think it would be
advantageous to everyone.

I would like to have more than 4 featured galleries. It seems silly that there is a hard limit at all, I mean it seems like it would be pretty easy to just let you add as many as you want, and they would just get added like regular galleries get added.
Also, when bulk adding keywords, if I add
word1, word2, word3, word4
in the Add box and hit preview, it puts it in the keyword as "word1, word2, word3, word4" with the quotations. So now it's one big keyword instead of 4 seperate ones. The workaround to this seems to be to go into "remove" and type " and then click preview. This is all well and good (besides being an extra annoying step) but if you have other quotations for some reason it will remove those as well. Why can't it just add the keywords without quotations?

Well, you can actually have as many as you like, simpy by making your homepage view by "galleries" not categories, and making private any galleries you do not want to have show on the homepage.

In fact I would rather they couldn't access the control panel at all (even though they can't change anything it would be better not to tempt them to try).
2. Multiple guest passwords/accounts
It would be nice to be able to have more than one guest username/password that can upload and caption photos. Maybe even with a log of who was on when.
Thanks for that.

For pro sales, can we see how the customer cropped the photo? This would give us great feedback on what customers are looking for, and will help us with proofing based on how they cropped the shot. :thumb

I would love to have the "save photo" option appear all the time while I'm logged in. If I'm logged in then I'm the owner "most likely". It's a pain to switch the gallery to allow originals just to save a photo... cause then I have to remember to switch it back and I'm a "man". Remembering isn't one of my features :rofl
**Update** not only do I have to check allow originals but I have to uncheck the protect copyright for my photos :(
Cheers!

I see you all added a feature for uploading from Photoshop Elements 5.
It sure would be nice if you could talk with the folk at Corel to get upload support for Paint Shop Pro Album.
I believe they currently only offer easy upload to shutterfly (boo).

P.S. hopefully this would be available for standard accounts, since that's what I have. ;-)

I'd like to be able to assign (or not) guest passwords by gallery. That way I could be sure guests didn't retitle or reorganize galleries they have no business with while giving them effectively free access to certain galleries.....
I'd definitly vote for this.
My SM setup is for our church, and we only need a standard account, which doesn't allow guest passwords at all. Considering that I'd like to let others at our church upload to the site, or at least to particular areas, it'd be *real* nice if we could get guest passwords in standard accounts, not just pro.
... and 2 levels of guest passwords, that allow either access to the whole area or just to one gallery would be great.
IMO, this would only be a good thing for SM, since it lets us use your standard accounts for things like our church, or for family setups, without compromising our main login. Think how many people would like to let other family upload to their SM account without giving them their main login? Gotta be tons.
So, it'd be giving us an important feature, and it makes SM generally more secure. What's the downside of that?

I would also like to see some type of discount system.
Another request would be the ability to download the original when the admin is logged in. This comes in handy when you don't have access to your originals at home.
It would streamline the process so you don't have to go into the customize area -- turn the feature on -- go to the gallery -- download the photo -- and then go back in to turn the feature off.
Thanks,

I can copy other gallery pricing to this gallery but there is no way for me to get the portfolio pricing onto this gallery so I can then add 25%.
Suggestion:
In the drop down list that allow me to select other gallery pricing for this gallery, add an option to select the Portfolio pricing as well.

I would like to see the "Page Title" option enhanced with smug keywords, something like:
SMUCATEGORY
SMUGGALLERY
SMUGIMAGENAME
SMUGIMAGETITLE
So we can have easy (no javascript hacking required) customized page titles like:
My Gallery - SMUGCATEGORY - SMUGGALLERY - SMUGIMAGETITLE
which would translate to
My Gallery - Other - People - Some shots of friends
It would also nice to somehow suppress the separator "-" if one of the keyword didn't exist.

Yes, I know about that hack. I tried it. It doesn't work with search engines and you can see the page title changing from the default/standard title to the hacked title when going from page to page. Yeah, but as you already told me, the standard smugmug popular photos link cannot be changed to default to a specific style.
However I just figure out how to change the standard link:
http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=386995&postcount=84
Problem solved (even though it would be nice to have this native to avoid code bloat).
One problem I see with smugmug is that the three different passwords can cause a lot of confusion. Just for a review there is the "album owner password", the "site wide password", and "album passwords".
Scenario 1:
I use a site wide password and hand this password out to relatives and friends. My dad, who barely can use a computer had problems accessing the site because the password I gave him didn't work. It turned out that he followed the "login" link on the top.
Scenario 2:
To give aquaintances access to selected albums I group them using "share groups" and password protect each album with the password hint "The password is: blah". While the owner can be hidden on the albums, the owner can not be hidden in share groups. Thus the site root is listed as a link. Clicking on it asks for a password that most likely will confuse people.
The simplest fix is to make it more clear what is going on and what passwords are asked for when prompting for a password. Phrases like "this site requires a password to continue" and "to proceed, please log in below" really doesn't help someone who took a wrong turn. Better, however, would be of course an improoved access control system.

My apologies if this has been brought up before....13 pages is alot to read through.
Fickr has a feature where you can draw a section on a picture and create a comment for that part of the picture. In this comment you can enter a link to another picture. Many people use it to create maps or guides that the user can literally click through a picture to be taken to different places..
I actually created a tool like this years ago, and was happy to see flickr actually bring it into main stream use.
Are you familiar with this feature?
Are you planning on implimenting it?

would it be possible to somehow have passwords at different levels? then allow keyword searching within the category the password has access?
Let's say by category/subcategory.
I have a category of friends.
anybody can go into that category and view and keyword search into all pictures that aren't in password protected galleries.
If they enter the category password, there keyword searches ALSO include the pictures in galleries protected by the category password.
A sturcture like this:
Category
password
SubCategory
password
enforce Category Password (Y,N)
Gallery
password
enforce SubCategory Password (Y,N)
Picture

Enforce Gallery Password (Y,N)

The ability for smugmug to edit orders that have been placed... specifically remove a print from an order.
I'm not too happy about it - one photo that was uploaded shouldn't have been. It was slightly out of focus, and the person actually bought it! :D I was proofing sales for the day and went "OH CRAP" when I saw it was a 8xD they ordered. Its not like I don't their money or anything, but if they got that print in the mail they would be pissed! :rofl After contacting the customer and explaining, I tried to get that one print removed. We had to cancel the entire order and place a new order to resolve. :rolleyes

We can't edit them but we can cancel and duplicate the order without the one you don't want - just email help@smugmug.com and we'll happily do it, IF IF IF we can catch it in time. Our ordering process is highly automated, and the orders go DIRECTLY to our print lab. There is a window, sometimes, in which we can cancel.

I'd like to add myself to the "others" who have requested this too. Another feature I'd love to see would be the ability to have the share photo option for the gallery owner only. As it stands, this and the view original sizes can only be off or on for all. This would also differentiate the owner from the casual viewer.

I'm sorry not to have time toread all the thread so if his has already been suggested...or discussed...
I find it really difficult to arrange (or rearrange) my galleries and categories
Im sure I will manage it but it reeally is very counter intuitive (for a Mac user!)
Everything was fine until I try to change the arrangements; at the moment I am trying to only have four folders on my home page and then want to arrange everything else in tose folders but e.g. when I try to customise there is the option for a subcategory but no option to actually create one....? (or is there?) with all the going back wards and forwards through different control panels I completeley lose my way. Now I know I'm getting on , (53) but I have no problems with windows or macs (Macs preferred) or websites so I have to ask... why am I having trouble (consistently) navigating the controlsd to manage my galleries on SM?:dunno
Is there not a better way to organise this (easier, more logical, more central, even more mac like possibly?) ???

Thinking about it what would be great is if the galleries could be sorted into categories and subcategories in the same way as the "arrange' button for photos,
- so if you decided you'd like to completely re arrange your galleries into different categories , you could just highlight the ones you wnated to move and tell them where to move from a drop down, mush faster and easier than doing each and every one individually through 'customize' each time

So... why not simply assign a location to a SmugMug Gallery instead of individual photos? In this scenario I would just customize a Gallery, say wedding photos, add a location for Google Maps, and be done. That location is not given to each photo, just the gallery. That way if I want to give individual locations to photos I still can.
...
Excellent idea!

Thanks for the feature request!
Andy, others.
I'm writing this comment to see if anybody else understands this because I have a gut feeling that the very helpful support people that I've emailed about this earlier haven't maybe understood the beauty of this.
This suggestion of in a way or an other layered privacy is one of Flickr's excellent features. The way it's set up in Flickr is that user can assign *each photo* with a privacy level of: public, totally private, family and/or friends. Now that their userbase has heavily grown and anyone with a Yahoo account (ie. everybody) can login to Flickr with that it's proved its superiority.
<dreaming>
What the whole Internet would need is a way to identify oneself and custom views and what can be seen/shown or not just the way Flickr is now doing. The horrible MSN Passport was a great idea and I have no idea if similar systems are even in the pipeline not to mention if they would even become adequately inexpensive (aka. free), easy to use, light (not resource hungry), secure, and widespread to be considered a real alternative. Maybe this is something that Google will be able to provide - and hopefully do it rigidly and delicately enough... Yahoo, not to mention MS, is way too closed to ever have a slightest chance for this.
</dreaming>
My two points:
1) Flickr's approach to allow per photo privacy level is fantastic. It allows users to e.g. post all their vacation photos in one 'album' (Flickr uses 'sets' which is like categories in SM but in a bit -- a lot -- nicer way: it allows one photo to be in multiple 'sets' (ie. categories)) and pick and choose which photos are shown
- to public (e.g. scenery, buildings, etc), which
- to both friends and family (most photos with people in them -- people are getting more and more aware of privacy issues of the fully open Internet, finally...), which
- to family only (photos that bore friends, but are nice and mom likes them, and the rest of the family, too)
- to friends only (party pics, anybody?), and also
- to no one (some romatic photos maybe that you stil want to upload for backup, etc)
It's also noteworthy that Flickr has managed to go even further in the 'layering' (as I call it) of the photo privacy: if you post fully private photos to Groups (Communities in SM, right?) they are shown *to group members*.
Also Flickr has been able to allow full search of tags, etc meta data of all the photos they are allowed to see (that their friends/family allow them AND the photos that are posted to Groups that they are members of). This is quite frankly FANTASTIC!
2) As SM doesn't have the userbase and it *seems* that (for a number of reasons / made choices) is not going to try to expand itself tenfold in near future there'd need to be another approach if the 'layered' privacy system was to be set up (which I'd very much hope as it's just so very brilliant).
I've suggested earlier, at least in a few emails to the support, that SM would build a layered password system similar to Flickr username id system which would allow a 'sub-global' right to view the photos of one specific user. With the same flexibility (id not better :) as Flickr's.
(I do know that some people have already raised their concern about the usability of the current multi-password system. And I agree that it might already be no-so-clear, not to mention if SM would add yet another password system. .. I just think that the 'layered' passwords could very well work together with the album specific passwords.)
So, please ask for clarifications if you don't see the beauty of the Flickr system! (And I wan to clarify that even if you all do it doesn't mean that SM should necessarily do the same. It might not be as great for SM's more professional and maybe more static userbase, even though for Flickr-type more photobloggin-ish use it absolutely Rocks.)

The second very nice thing that Flickr does well and I'd much hope SM would, too, is the stats.
I noted that there's been discussion on this in this or some other thread but I'm commenting it here as it's a feature request (and I can't find the discussion(s?)) right again.
* Views per photo: self-expanaltory (right?). In SM it's bundld in part in how the stats are shown, which has been discussed and which I, too, would hope that would be more clear. (Ideally it'd be possible to download both per folder as well as per photo views into Excel ie. as CSV of tabbed text.)
* accumulated views: BOTH per photo as well as per folder.
Of course, if it was easy to download the data on per-photo views into Excel it'd be pretty easy to sum things up.
But why not show things in a nice table and maybe even a graph or few in SM? (Accumulated / (rolling) weekly/monthly/yearly views, maybe?)
BTW. Would someone be kind enough to elaborate on how the StarExplorers stats are presented? I didn't find the info on the app's page to be enough to understand how it works / what it downloads/shows and how.
Thanks!

I've been looking at the info regarding the new Aperture 1.5 update. Apparently, you will be able to export photos directly from Aperture to "3rd-party service providers," such as Flickr, Pictage, etc. See here: http://www.apple.com/aperture/resources/exportapi.html
This would be a great SmuMug feature for those of us running Aperture.

Thanks for making this request, Jason! :thumb

Hello,
I'm new here, and I've decided to stay with SmugMug after evaluating it alongside Flickr and Fotki. But I'd like to make a few comments and suggestions.
1. It's great to be able to share private galleries by just e-mailing a link. But here's a simple thing that would make it even better. Allow us to create multiple links to the same gallery, with their own options (like password and downloading originals). And allow changing those options, or even disabling the links in the future. The way I envision this, you'd give a nickname when requesting a new link (e.g. "mom", "family", "Alice", "blog" -- for how the link would be used), and there would be "manage links" choice under gallery tools. Maybe even separate stats for each link in the future?
2. The keywords don't do anything for private galleries, correct? Could this be changed? They could be very useful for my own use (help me find photos among my own), and within share groups.
3. Virtual galleries, consisting of photos in other galleries. I've read a couple of threads here about v.g. based on keywords, and that just sounds like a big kludge -- lots of work, and incomplete functionality. I often want to create a gallery with all photos of an occasion, and another one with only the best, and another with the best of the best. And then maybe one combining the best's of several galleries, for "best of the year". Virtual galleries would be great for that.
4. The "make 2nd copy" feature is... well, strange. My guess is that most of the time it's used to copy photos into another gallery (partly because there are no virtual galleries). So why isn't the interface similar to moving, where you can select multiple photos and a target gallery? In addition to having to go through a cumbersome process, there is a period of time when visitors see duplicates in the original gallery.
5. FTP uploads would be very nice. Because ftp is a nice protocol, there are lots of clients with fancy features, and lots of people are already familiar with them. Queuing and automatic retrying with resume in Filezilla are simply great. And ability to upload from a command line is useful to me. (Uploading with Filezilla to Fotki was sooo sweet...) I know it's been mentioned before, but I just wanted to add another voice for it, and give a few additional reasons for why I'd like to see it.
Thanks for listening!

Hello,
... decided to stay with SmugMug after evaluating it alongside Flickr and Fotki.
Sounds very familiar... Off-topic: what are the other comparable good services currently? At least PBase was a serious choice when I was looking at different services. But I didn't try it because it either didn't seem as good as Smugmug or was it that they didn't offer any kind of trial period... Can't remember.
But the question remains: what are the other comparable good services currently?
"mom", "family", "Alice", "blog" --
This sounds awfully lot like my suggestion/request about the 'layered' privacy handling from Flickr (finetuned to suit Smugmug).
2. The keywords don't do anything for private galleries, correct? Could this be changed? They could be very useful for my own use (help me find photos among my own), and within share groups.
This has been requested earlier and I'm *very* much in favor of this, too. People are getting more and more aware of privacy issues related to phtos - especially with metadata! - as they should.
... One possibility would be to have (yet) another privacy level which would make the metadata private & unsearchable(uncrawlable). There are a number of photos that I could make fully public, but not their keywords and/or captions&descriptions (... please support more IPTC fields, too :).
3. Virtual galleries, consisting of photos in other galleries. --
Another feature very nicely done in Flickr.
4. The "make 2nd copy" feature is... well, strange. My guess is that most of the time it's used to copy photos into another gallery (partly because there are no virtual galleries). ...
Exactly. The solution is 'virtual galleries' (or sets, or whatever you want to call them).
... So why isn't the interface similar to moving, where you can select multiple photos and a target gallery?
My guess: SM wants to save disk space (and I'm not blaming them if this is the reason). .. This would be, again, a good reason to make the 'v.g.'s.
5. FTP uploads would be very nice.
Fully agree. Maybe this is somewhat a technical issue. Now the filenames are changed when you upload photos. Each photo in SM has a unique id. You can't say the same about photos' filenames.
I've learnt to give up my hope to get FTP. But I'd very much like to be able to - at least have the possibility to - download the files with their original filenames and allow my friends/family to do the same.
Keep up the good work!

I really NEED NEED NEEEEED a way for my clients to select favorite images and have them added to a folder which I can then retrieve. (Save back to my computer or ftp back to myself) Or.. at the very least have the selected image names emailed to me so that i may retrieve the full res. files from my end.) When designing albums and books it is very impractical to try to retrieve their favorites from the comment section. It is also impractical to place a big print order this way. Sooo... after I go through all the trouble to refind these images from these comments.. I just print them local mostly now. I am in the process of trying to find another proofing gallery because of this. I really hate to change because I love a lot of the features here.
The ability to issue Gift Certifates would be FANTASTIC. I would love to include a print order certificate in my client packages which let me order their prints at my cost while they purchased at their cost but handled all their own selecting and ordering. I would be sooooo happy!!!!!!!!!!:barb And YOU would get way more orders!!!! It needs to be SO EASY for them to order prints that they just cant help themselves!
I also believe it would increase my sales dramatically if my clients and their guest could 'collect' images in 'favorites folders' to share their opinions with each other and later use the collection of favorites for easy ordering.
My comment folder is OVERLOADED and it is just impossible to delete them all individually. It would be nice if you could bulk delete or have the comments sorted by event etc.
I would also like to offer Photobooks similar to shutterfly.com, mypublisher.com or firsteditionorigials.com that my clients could build themselves from the images uploaded here. (And I just set a mark up rate.) That would ROCK! Pictage.com does something similar to that on their site. Wonder if one of these companies would be interested in partnering with smugmug to accept your orders?? "Bazillions of images already uploaded to the internet just waiting to find their way into one of these precious little books! Hmmmm" Even if you could take the client's picks (for a book) from one of the before suggested 'favorite folders'.. and transfer them or send them to the appropriate company.... I'm not sure, I'm just a photographer, I need you guys to work all that out! lol
Also.. the new 'spam code' needed to enter a comment is just NOT WORTH IT!!! It makes it too much of a pain to enter comments and my client feedback has almost completely stopped since that was implimented.
I also need 10x20 print sizes!!!!! PLEASE!!!!! The entire wedding industry is now on this dimmension for the coffeetable books which are all the rage. Gotta have that size!! (Other sizes for the double page spreads would be great also.) I'm having to order those elsewhere too.. Which means I have to load them here for my clients to see and load them there to order them. YUCK! Double uploading.. YUCK YUCK YUCK
I love some of the improvements made lately. I especially love being able to rearrange the gallery without having to go into the old setup.
Thanks for caring!!! ricki

I would love the ability to group the prints I want to make available to my customers in one group, instead of the "Standard Prints, Other Prints", etc.
If I crop my photos w/ a 4x5 crop I would like to limit the choices that my customer can purchase that photo to those crops that will work well (4x5, 8x10, etc.). Same applies for the 2x3 crop, 3x4 crop, 1x1, etc.
The problem is that if I limit choices now the first thing my customer sees is the Standard Prints option and the first picture price is for an 8x10 (in the case of a 4x5 crop photo). In order for them to see the other option they have to KNOW to click the product drop-down and select "Other Prints". This is too complicated for a lot of people (I know, I know, it shouldn't be, but it is). Too many choices is bad in some cases - especially for those who aren't computer literate.
I need to be able to group the print options I want to make available for my customer in one drop-down. I don't mind having the photo gifts as a seperate select, but for "prints" I would love the ability to group them all together, which would allow me to zero out those print options I don't want available to my customer for whatever reasons.
Hopefully, that made sense. If this has been requested before please add my vote for this feature.
Thanks for a great product!
-Oh yeah, please work a better deal on the larger print sizes with your print partner. As it stands now I will probably tell my customers to order larger prints directly through me instead of through my smugmug site. When you guys are 33% higher or more in some cases on the larger prints it doesn't make sense for me to pay that on top of Smugmug's 15% cut (not to mention the slightly over-priced shipping). I don't want to do my own fulfillment on large prints, I would much rather pay you the 15% for that, but I can't pay a 50% premium - that's a business model that won't work. :scratch Food for thought.
Thanks and that's all (I really mean it this time!).

[...multiple links to the same gallery, with their own options...]
This sounds awfully lot like my suggestion/request about the 'layered' privacy handling from Flickr (finetuned to suit Smugmug). Not quite. The Flickr friend/family/public access is per-photo, which I think is serving a different purpose. It would be relatively simple to emulate with virtual galleries (create a separate v.g. for each access level -- not too bad since there are so few of them).
[...copy only one at a time...]
My guess: SM wants to save disk space (and I'm not blaming them if this is the reason).
I wonder what SM uses for the back end to store photos. I'd be surprised if whatever it is, it can't reference the same thing from several places (in a Unix hard links way).
[...FTP uploads...]
Fully agree. Maybe this is somewhat a technical issue. Now the filenames are changed when you upload photos. Each photo in SM has a unique id. You can't say the same about photos' filenames. The solution to this is to make FTP uploads go into a special gallery "FTP Uploads". You'd then move the photos to their destinations. This is how it's implemented at dotPhoto. To allow FTP downloads, you could do the reverse -- move/copy photos to a special gallery, and they become visible to an FTP client, maybe by the original name.

Actually, that's only one use of this feature. People like it because it lets them play with cropping and color effects without touching the original image.
A note on virtual galleries: I know quite a few SmugMuggers have done this using keywords, though this wouldn't work on your private galleries.
It might be something to look into for you public galleries, however. There's a thread on that somewhere around here... though I can't put my finger on it at the moment :scratch .

I get a few comments under "Gallery comments" that are obviously directed
at an individual photo.
I would like to see the photo comments removed from below the photo
and added at the bottom next to the gallery comment along with a view
comments link.
view comments "gallery comments" add comment "comment on this photo" add comment
Another suggestion is to combine the gallery/photo comments together in
one listing and if a photo comment, display a tiny/thumbnail of the photo
commenting on with the comment.
Just some random thoughts,

It would be very helpful to have an option to display file names of images in a customer's cart.
I recently had occasion to make a gallery of pre-cropped images for a customer who had a bit of trouble with the crop feature. I uploaded multiple crops of multiple images into a new gallery and the images were named: 01_4x6.jpg, 01_8x10.jpg, 01_5x7, etc.
The customer needed varying quantities of each crop.
Ideally, the customer could have placed all the cropped images into the cart and simply updated quantities (quantity 4 of image 01_5x7.jpg in a 01_5x7.jpg crop). In reality, I spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone helping the customer place the order, as the cart does not show file names and all the cropped images appear nearly identical, except for the red crop marks.
An image in the cart may be selected and its file name viewed in the gallery, but while doing this, the customer accidentally reset the entire cart to default quantity = 1. The customer took it well and even laughed a little. I cried.
Thank you for your consideration of this request.

It would be nice to have a PayOut button in the Pro sales to let smugmug now we'd like to be added to the next check payout cycle versus having to send an email. Then the "Not Paid" status should be changed to "Pending" until the check is cut.
This would be a very nice feature
Heck make it a slot machine and we can pull the handle. Winner every time!

I'm not sure if this should qualify under a bug or a feature request, so it gets its own thread unless a mod can make that decision for me. PSE 5 has a new map feature which allows you to drop photo's on a yahoo map and it generates GPS coordinates for them. Unfortunately, due to a bug or a design decision, it does not write this info into the EXIF directly, and thus, smugmug does not read it and does not place it on maps.
Since smugmug has the integration with PSE 5, it would be nice if smugmug would read the part of the XMP metadata where PSE 5 writes the gps coordinates and would use that instead, since there is currently no way to coax PSE 5 to do things the smart and extensible (and standardized) way. (Or better yet, if anyone knows of a plugin that makes PSE do it the correct way to begin with, that would be great. I'd write one but im not paying 200 bucks for the SDK.)
Hence, it is a bug in that the data is there and smugmug doesnt read it, but it isnt a bug because the data is non-standard and i request smugmug try to read the non-standard data. A cursory explanation of the problem is here: http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc1ddf9
Thanks,

Hi,
I don't know if this has been mentioned and addressed already... I skimmed the thread, but 16 pages... yowza!... Anyway, the request...
Would it be possible to have customized gallery URLs. So rather than:
username.smugmug.com/gallery/23434564
it could be configured to use something specific, like:
username.smugmug.com/my-pictures-of-cats
or
username.smugmug.com/mybest
?
Just a thought, I'd love to be able to give out direct urls for topics to family members (especially those who fear the Internet and type in urls manually). :thumb

I may have missed this one, but I don't think so. I know that we are able to order a back-up of our orders (CD's start at 11.99 etc) But is there a way for us to offer an entire gallery on CD/DVD. I for one, know that there are people out there that may rather spend a little more on EVERY picture on a DVD, then they would for 18 prints. Now obviously it would have to be priced pretty well, But I think that this would open up an area for some people to make even more money.
I know there will be people who say that they want complete control of where their images are printed... this option may not be for them. I think the user that would benefit from this may be the shooter that includes a DVD, already, for the contract signing client (ie wedding couple). Then later the guests/family/friends would have to the option to either buy prints, a DVD or both if they cared to.
Sorry for the long post.

:thumb :thumb Two thumbs up for the latest proof update with crop/color type.
Here's a small one that will make us a little less crazy.
When you go to replace a photo, you are brought to the window with the browse button. You have the thumbnail there so you know which photo you are replacing. Can you also add the file name next to the thumbnail?
I gather up all of the photos I need to look at, edit all of them, and upload them all at once. When I go to browse, I gotta remember which photo I need to replace next, and if I have like 20 to do it can get a little hairy. Much easier to match up file names on the actual replace window!
..no problems with the replace feature since the update... crosses fingers :thumb

So, Andy, here is my problem. I have a lot of images that are on my site, and a heck of a lot more to come. I need these images to be secure and therefore have a password to each gallery. From what i can gather you are not able to search using keywords unless the gallery is public and without a password. If this is true, that realy sucks, and i hope in the future the images would be searchable but not be able to be opened unless you have the password.

I'm new here and will post an Intro shortly, but I wanted to put this out there reagrding a feature request that I think is important - and surprised not to see it here.
I'd like there to be a way to show something akin to a 100% crop of a small portion of the picture to show the sharpness and/or detail of the picture. Resizing and jpeg compression can take the zing out of a lot of pictures by blurring fine detail, and that might just be the selling point!!
If there's a way to do this that makes sense, please let me know how. Ideally, I'd love to have a mouse_over kind of thing thaqt gives you a non-static pop-up of a postage-stamp sized crop while you're hovering over a picture, and have it go away when you move the mouse off the picture.
Thanks for any help/feedback!

For my digital download, stock image site, I have a couple of clients that would like to be able to pay an annual fee and then have free reign at my site to download whatever they like without having to fuss with credit cards everytime they need an image.
Have annual subscriptions been given any thought for those of us using SM as a Stock Image site? I recognize that there may not be a lot of incentive for SM to add this feature, as it would mean that they are bypassed on the 15% take, but at the same time they do allow anyone to set all of their images for Original Download.
I for one would be happy to submit copies of Annual license agreements and pay SM 15% of the contracted amount, just to be able to offer this convenience to my clients. For that matter the Annual license could be set up as a item of purchase at Smugmug at which they would automatically get their 15%.
I think that it could be set up without too much effort.
Any thoughts? What say you?

I agree, but wanted to share what I did that seems to be working well. It's a PITA to set up, but the client seems to like it: http://www.tippiepics.com/trimblewedding. It's basically an HTML only page with a bunch of buttons that go to the different galleries I'm allowing them to see/order from. (I did the same for the bride/groom, but have a few other private links for them like downloads and getting ready photos that aren't appropriate for all to see.) Each gallery then has a link back to this gallery with the buttons. MUCH easier for them to navigate!
(I did this a while ago and would now turn off the additional gallery browsing options at the top of the page. Not worth it now since it's an "old" wedding.)
HTH!
Oh, but I want to second that we need to have private CATEGORIES or SUB-CATEGORIES with the users able to see all the galleries under it - unless they are marked private, too. So the only way someone can get to the sub-category is if they are given the URL, but once there, they see all the underlying (non-private) galleries.

A few feature requests that have hopefully not be said before! (Or if they have, consider them even more important to include since I'm adding them... :D )
Pro - see when a check was issued - right now I see either paid/not paid and I'd like to see when the check was sent to know it's on its way.
Pro - see how much is outstanding to be paid without having to add up orders by downloading
Pro/Power - or at least Pro - LARGER video size in MB as well as the previously requested more options for video types. I would like to be able to upload longer videos.
Pro - matrix-type interface for pricing so I can create a "set" of prices and apply that set to different galleries. Then I can change that set and all the appropriate gallery prices update. Because I have different sets of pricing, I can't just set it with Portfolio pricing. And when I change my pricing for one set currently, I have to make sure I grab all the right galleries to reprice - and hope I didn't miss one. I would also love to be able to select that pricing set from "customize gallery" instead of having to go into the pricing page. Then I can set up a quick setting for my galleries and have a certain pricing set be applied, too. And then if I need to make any overrides, I can just go into the current way to set pricing. Wow. Does all that make sense?
Pro - digital downloads in smaller sizes - 640x480, for example - or somethign similar. (I know this has probably been requested, but wanted to restate it.)Thanks so much!

OK but for now, you know that if you have $500 or more in a month, the check will go out usually by the 8th of the following month. More than $200 and less than $500? Quarterly, by the 8th of the month following the end of the Quarter - (Apr, July, October, January). You may also request a check anytime, and it'll be sent the first week of the following month - all the details here:

Smugmug is awesome, but a few things would make it even better...
1. Would it be possible to have a single gloss/matte/luste option on the cart instead of setting it individually, or at least to separate the texture option from the size option in the individual menus so that I can copy the texture settings from one photo to all the others without also changing the sizes? Plus it would make the print size menu shorter.
2. Are you ever planning on having photo sizes smaller than 3.5x5 available? Well, I suppose EZprints doesn't do them, so no, but how about wallet sets that have four different photos instead of one? I like wallets, but I never need four, so I usually just stick four small photos on one image in an editor and buy that as a single 4x6, but a simpler way would be nice, and I'd be willing to pay .99 (the wallet price) instead of .19 (the 4x6 price) for something like that...

Hi again, sorry if any of these have been requested before. I tried searching, but the threads are so long it's hard to read them all...
1) Copy a Gallery option to make a duplicate of an entire gallery
2) Bulk 2nd Copy - present the same screen as Bulk Move, select the pics to duplicate, click Go!
-or-
Maybe integrate the two, select your photos to make 2nd copies of, then at the top or bottom, a drop down box to select a gallery to move the copies to. Seems like all it would take (in concept) would be to modify the move code to not-delete the files after the move...?
This would be awesome! :clap Ever try to make a duplicate of a gallery with 60 photos in it? Not fun. Especially if friends or family have uploaded some photos, so you can't "just re-upload" them... I have to do this every month, sometimes for multiple galleries... :(
OK, stepping down from the podium now... :wink

PS - Oh, and please correct me if I've missed some other way to do this stuff? Thanks!!!!

One more FR:
Add options to the Customize Gallery screen to be able to enable or disable all the different view sizes, not just Originals. I set up a gallery each month for my local camera club with the digital images that are submitted for competition; the makers have to submit hi-res versions for the competition; but they don't want the hi-res versions posted online. It would be nice to limit viewing sizes to only medium or something...? :ivar
Cool. Thanks!

Cool. Thanks. I knew most of that from reading up about it, but didn't know about the 8th of the month.... But you can't watermark it... And if you had "met" my last customer and "seen" just how confoooosed she was by the whole ordering process, to toss in a new gallery?!? ACK! Just way too crazy for her! LMAO! (But, of course, she wouldn't have ever been able to figure out how to grab that image from a screen capture..... :rofl )
Thanks so much to you and SM for listening to your customers!

I know that I have read other posts on DG on how SM wants to keep one page title throughout, and I am not exactly sure on all of the reasons that go into keeping it that way, but I would like to propose that an option be given to pro users to have the Page title reflect the Image Caption or some other field provided where data can be entered.
The site where I have my Stock Video listed has just changed their system to alow this, and I believe that it will be a real help with the seach engines, if we can have more control over what that Page title will be, especially if it can be tied to each individual image.
Here is an example of what I mean: https://www.pond5.com/item/55404
Pond5 Supplies the Phrase "Stock Video Footage of", and then what ever I provide as a title to the clip, is added, to make up the title for the page.
Could we get something like this going in SM please? I believe that this will translate into better Search engine placement, which will translate into better sales, which can only be good for SM

There are some offline programs that do this, but it would be cool to be able to compare two images side by side on smugmug.
I know you can open two or more windows/tabs other programs, save them to disk, etc... lots of hassle. A nice program can get the position/size exactly right without any futzing around.
Anyway, once the code is there it would be trivial to do 3 or even more... But just two would be sweet. I've certainly never seen it on-line!
Just a thought as I was browsing my pics tonight.

Yeah I know, and I do use them. I named them "My default gallery settings" and "My unprotected gallery settings", but whatever naming I can think of doesn't tell me as much about a gallery's properties as thinking of an existing gallery and how I use that.
I find creating and handling those templates cumbersome and unintuitive, so I guess that's where I'm coming from.

Now that SM has everything in place to build your own Stock Image site, I wish that they would also extend this over to offering the tools to build a full resolution stock video site. This is the next big thing and it would be great if SM could take the lead on this. Some sites have started to do this, but none that offer the ability to customize the way SM does.
I know this takes up a lot more storage space and bandwidth, but SM could offer the service for a larger annual fee or a larger percentage of the take. Currently the best that is offered is 50% at www.pond5.com (http://www.pond5.com)
With the customize tools, and offering the client 70% of sales, I believe SM could take the lead on this!

Would it be possible to get the upload log sortable by the various fields? Most importantly I think is FileName.
(I just had the uploader crash part way into a 500+ shot upload of a 2 camera * 2 week vacation, and I'm about to go spend some "quality time" in the upload log to figure out which ones had been uploaded.... since they seem to be sorted by when they finished processing, it's not directly obvious which ones made it in and which didn't.)

Quick work-a-round, on the upload log page do a "select all" (cntl-a on pc)
and then "paste special" as text into Excel. There you can sort.

haha, or as I've now done it three times:
save as... log.txt
madhatter:~/Desktop cabbey$ grep IMG_ log.txt | cut -c 24-35 | sort > ~/success
madhatter:~/Desktop/trip pics cabbey$ for f in `cat ~/success `; do
mv -v $f uploaded/
done
restart smugmug uploader, drop in the entire folder's contents
no multihundred dollar spread sheet application needed... all the tools came for free with the OS. (though, yes, I do have MS Office, I'd GLADLY trade Excell for an iWork spread sheet package.)
why yes, I am a unix geek... what ever gave you that idea? :D
ETA: ooops, on the most recent itteration through I realized I needed to also take into account the ones listed in the log that were failed. Easy enough to do manually, since there is so far on average 0.5 per attempt.

Now that I have decided (rather belatedly) that I would like to watermark ALL my pics it seems quite a laborious process
IF I understand correctly I have to customise EACH gallery (via 'customise gallery') now to water mark NEW pics
AND
Have to cusomise each gallery (via 'photo tools -watermarking') to watermark all the pics already uploaded
I would much rather I be able to do the whole lot in one go, old and new pics, and change the whole lot IN ONE GO if I decide to change the water mark
Is this already available and I missed it, or is it a real feature request?

I'd like to request that copyright and basic camera EXIF info be retained on Medium, Large and XL size images. It seems important that Smugmug should preserve the fields that would hold copyright notices (thus helping copyright owners protect their work) and, while doing that, it would be nice to preserve camera, lens, shutter speed, aperture and ISO. I don't need all the other EXIF/IPTC fields in the auto-generated sizes if their size is an issue.
I frequently post in photo forums and would like that information to be available in the images I post. The only way to do that today is to NOT use any of the generated sizes from Smugmug in postings and only link to originals which is defintely a pain because it means I have to break my normal Smugmug workflow and upload specially downsized images into special galleries.

Just to clarify. I'm not asking for a separate link that has my EXIF. I've always known I could do that. I'm asking for my copyright info and a subset of my EXIF to be attached to my image wherever it goes. I love it that I can right-click on a lot of images posted by others and I can just see the EXIF with a Firefox extension. I and others can't do that on the images I or others from Smugmug post. It also seems like copyright info should be kept with all non-thumb sizes.

That might be doable through the API.... would need some code written to do it though. (I've started work on a set of objects to wrapper the smugmug api, once they're done, this should be realtively straight forward, so I'll log a TODO to write a tool specifically for this. Though without a pro account, I'll be a little lost on testing... if you have a mac, can I ping you when I have a tool ready that you could try? I make no promises on when I'll be at that point, as I'm working on them in my nights/weekends freetime.)

A client of mine discovered (by accident) a very good use of the thumbs. I sent him a link to a private gallery as a proofsheet. He used the thumbs to try to tell me which ones he approved/disapproved. Unfortunately, the system is now set up to make it VERY hard to recover his votes.
My feature request: make it possible to recover the thumbs votes. In order for preference:
Show thumbs totals to gallery owners. SM has resisted this before, but I've never understood the reasoning.
Show overall positive vs overall negative thumbs totals to gallery owners. This gives away less than 1 if we are being paranoid.
Show thumbs totals to owners of galleries only if the gallery has opted out of the popular sweepstakes in some irrevocable way. This means that the owner has decided the gallery will use thumbs only for the purpose of communicating the totals to him. Because the gallery could never be reentered in the popular sweepstakes, the owner couldn't reverse engineer how the thumbs influence the popular thing.
Being able to use the thumbs for this particular purpose would solve a long standing issue I've had with clients. It's been like pulling teeth to get them to leave comments or send me email with links or file names that I could actually decipher. What I usually get is email like this: "Approved: the shot of Misha with that great turnout in 2nd position." How great would it be to streamline this process?
I must not be the only person who would love this.

It would be very nice if the API would allow us to do this. Something like adding X-Smug-ImageID=${old_id} to the PUT headers would seem to do it. Maybe also the MD5Sum of the OLD image should be required, just as a way to say "are you sure you have the right image?".

I get a lot of stuff via mail because I'm picky and the stuff I want is good (therefore expensive and no store with a store front could afford to give it shelf space in this cheaper is better world we live in), and these companies often throw in a freebie when my order is fairly large. I was thinking it would be cool if I could do this. I see the pro order tools have gotten quite powerful for those of us with proof delays. I think it would be neat if we could throw in a freebie that would get charged to our CC if we should choose to do so.

JavaScript/AJAX-based image browsing with image pre-loading for speed. We’ve got this in testing right now for SmugMug, and it’s really great. The downside is the URLs get a little uglier, but I think everyone can agree the speed tradeoff is worth it.
Hi,
I'm being very jealous of my friend's website speed http://albums.jprenaux.com/ and was wondering, especially after Don's post above, if this feature ever got out of testing on Smugmug ? Is there a way to see/activate it ?
Maybe coupled with the lower-rez photo displayed before the sharp one.
Thanks,
McGil

My feature request: that Smugmug would sort photos based on the same criteria as Windows XP does. Yeah, I know I can go in and manually move the images, but having to do that over and over for every gallery would be painful. I'm sure there's a better way. :D

Republished below:
In the Windows world files that start with an underscore (_pear.jpg) will show up before files that that start with a letter or number (pear.jpg). This issue is problematic for me in this gallery:
http://photos.jasondunn.com/gallery/1997142
If you scroll down to the very bottom you can see that the files after "ZZ Top" are files that start with an underscore:
_25-all-time-holiday-favorites-1994.jpg
It would be really, really great if Smugmug's system for sorting based on file name worked exactly like Windows XP does, largely because I imagine that's what most of their customers are using. Or if Macs do it differently, maybe there's a "Windows" and "Mac" sort function or something.
There are also problems with the way the Smugmug system deals with regular files names. Take a look at this gallery for instance:
http://photos.jasondunn.com/gallery/2034190
The first three photos, when sorted by file name, are:
L T Paniak's 60th Birthday - 007.jpg
L T Paniak's 60th Birthday - 011.jpg
L T Paniak's 60th Birthday - 012.jpg
Why would 007.jpg come first?
L T Paniak's 60th Birthday - 004.jpg:
http://photos.jasondunn.com/gallery/2034190/2/104648030
Comes just before L T Paniak's 60th Birthday - 045.jpg:
http://photos.jasondunn.com/gallery/2034190/2/104663045
There IS a logic here looking at the 004.jpg and 045.jpg, but I can't figure out why 007.jpg would be before 001.jpg.
As you can tell, I prefer more "natural" file names, complete with spaces, full words, and numbers. I really adore Smugmug, and am just starting to use it, but this issue is a painful one for me.:huh

I have a new template created for my galleries with the help of a skilled CSS developer:
http://photos.jasondunn.com
Problem is, many of my requests to him were met with "Smugmug doesn't allow us to do that". Specifically with the footer for instance, I dislike how much "dead" space there is there. I wish I could have added the Creative Commons stuff to the Smugmug footer, and heck, maybe even the RSS stuff at the very bottom. Basically, just more control over every single part of the template.
On the home page, I was shocked and a little dismayed to learn that there was no way to speficy the size of the gallery thumbnail images and the amount of text that appeared on the home page. We live in a world of increasingly higher-resolution monitors, and I find the gallery thumbnail size on the home page to be too small.
The size of the gallery thumbnail and the amount of text on the category pages is better:
http://photos.jasondunn.com/Parties
It seems like the code/capability is there, so why can't we use it? Or, if we wanted to, why not be able to control the image size for featured galleries (I'd have them be pretty big) and also control the size for regular galleries (I'd have them be about 200% the size they are now - my template has the space for it).
Smugmug rocks :clap, but this gallery thumbnail size issue is really surprising to me - who wouldn't want to have bigger images? :scratch

For a long time I've been wishing I could have a multi-column layout on my site. I've made a few false starts, but last week I finally put it all together. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, but it was a challenge, to be sure. There a few things that smugmug's page structure could do to make this type of layout easier. (See my homepage (http://www.shutterglass.com) to see what I did.)
1. The one thing I absolutely couldn't overcome was that I had to have a wrapper around the entire content well. So I actually hacked one in by putting an opening <div> in my header and closing it in my footer. But it'd be nice if it was already in the page, of course.
2. Seems to me it wouldn't be too difficult for smugmug to offer this type of layout as a theme or something. There's a fair amount of CSS tweaking involved. It'd be nice if SM just did for us. I don't know how much demand there might be for such a layout, but it's a very typical kind of page layout on the web.
3. Browser-specific CSS hacks are a nightmare. There are better ways to do it by serving up browser-specific stylesheets. Again, I could (and did, a little) hack this myself, but it'd be sweet if SM offered that kind of functionality built-in.
4. It's a pain defining almost identical styles for #homepage, #journal, #category, etc. It'd be nice if the main content div on each page type had the same id or some other easy way to select for it.

Andy,
What Gary means is...he wants a generic div wrapper around the main content, not including the header and footer. There is a div that appears, but unforunantely the id changes depending on what page or style you are on. Gary added a div like displayed below..
[header content]
[footer content]

I agree. One of the few things that I find frustrating about SM is admin navigation. It takes too many clicks to do something.

FYI, the reason I had to have the content-well wrapper was to implement a 3-column layout with fixed width sides and liquid center, as described here: http://www.positioniseverything.net/articles/onetruelayout/appendix/holygrail . I'm sure there are other layout problems that the content wrapper would also be useful for.

Something that would be very useful: being able to bulk keyword on the image level across multiple galleries and categories. On that same note, it'd be nice to be able to have certain keywords applied at upload, kinda like pricing and watermarking.

I think it would be nice to have some sort of personalized mini banner or button or such like the Flickr Badge - to put on our blogs or other sites to promote/spread word/entice folks to check out our smugmug. The Flickr badge is a pretty neat feature that draws the eyes... tiny images that start larger then shrink and move to another spot. Hard to explain, so here's an example I grabbed from someone's blog...

Hi!
A couple of my clients now have been asking if greeting cards, especially holiday postcards would be available to print via the smugmug website. Don't know if it's been mentioned before, but how about offering this through the "gift" prints section?
Thanks!

I'd like to be able to customize (not code) the password protected page per gallery. It could be in the create gallery process and also in gallery settings I suppose. I'd like to explain why a gallery is password protected and maybe link to a similar gallery that is not password protected.

I'd like the options "Move to gallery" and "Copy to gallery" under photo tools.
Today there's "Move photos" which takes you into a special version of the gallery where you highligt one or several photos to move. Belongs under gallery tools, I feel.
There's also "Make 2nd copy" which will make a indistinguishable copy (unless you have filenames on I guess) which can fool you to move the maybe featured or linked to original.

I'd like a Smugmaps viewing style where a map of a photo's location appears in some way when selected. It could be in a box that replaces some of the thubnails in the Smugmug viewing style. Maybe the map could load behind (in the sam box as) the currently displayed photo, and switch to map either on hover or cklicking a button.

Re: DDs (Digital Downloads) _Pricing and searching
If SM is serious about providing a serious pro functionality for this then -
Some very pertinent points raised here:
http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=356343&postcount=26
http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=380705&postcount=30
Basically the rights 'verbiage' as one poster puts it needs updating for more than the all encompassing personal or commercial scenarios
Also the ability to search needs upgrading as suggested in the above link
thanks

I'd like to be able to set more than one password to a gallery. The way I have it set up today is I apply the same password to all galleries and give the password to family and friends, meaning everyone with the password can view everything. If I could assign two or three passwords per gallery I could give the grand-pappy password (applied to all galleries) to those closest to me and give other passwords (applied to some galleries) to friends and acquaintances.
Icing on the cake would be a time-limited password, that would stop working after a week.

I'm in the process of adding watermarks to all my galleries - it actually goes pretty fast thanks to Firefox and its wonderful tabs :D.
But I'm thinking it might be nice to have a "bulk watermarking" feature so I can add/remove/change watermarks on many galleries at once.
Thanks in advance for reading this.

Sorry if this was already mentioned, but when a photo is opened full size and more then fills the screen, it would be great if you could just grab it and move it around vs having to scroll with the scroll bars.

I feature my most recent galleries and I would like the featured galleries to sort themselves "automatically". If I have four featured galleries and feature a new gallery as number one, I'd like the one which was previously number one to be bumped to number two and so on.

Albums, Albums, Albums...
That would let my customers go online and design coffee table books and allow me to mark up the price accordingly.
