Guess who?

Me? :)

I know who you meant, but had to chime in for myself.

I'm so tempted, I can't decide whether to or not, I know in my head I don't really need it, my current PowerMac isn't slow but I'm such a sad techno nerd I'm not sure I can resist.

Good grief Mac's and 'L' lenses, my downfall.

oh but I want one so badly!

But I'm going to wait as long as I can..and that means 1 year +. My Powermac is running just fine and I really can't justify upgrading at this time.

Sadly, no word on a MacBook Pro chip or memory upgrade. :cry

I've just set photoshop to batch convert 20 images, I'm recording some live TV, playing some music on ITunes and using Google Earth whilst performing a merge to HDR in photomatix and typing this.

My system can't cope, I clearly need a new Mac Pro, I mean this is just unacceptable performance.

That's good enough reason for me!

:thumb Thanks. New processor. No word on more capacity for memory. As David says, adding memory would make sense for a 64 bit processor. But it would also involve a redesign, maybe?

I'm still thinking about ordering a Mac Pro, however I'm not prepared to pay Apple's prices for RAM. I understand Crucial have withdrawn their Mac Pro compatible RAM due to overheating issues, apparently the stuff Apple installs has some pretty hefty heatsinks.

Has anyone installed 3rd party RAM in a Mac Pro without any problems?

After Crucial recalled his memory, he went aftermarket again?

AFAIK, he's still using the Crucial mem.

Really? He said he had a recall notice waiting in the mail when he got home.

Mine came in!!! WOOT! This thing is FAST, and transfering files with a MAc from ont to another... Couldn't be any easier, just connect a firewire and BOOM all done, right down the desktop picture.

All the mail was moved, all the mail settings, everything... In about 30 minutes.

I have spent days trying to do that on a PC!

I too want to get more RAM, at least 1 more GB, but I will wait to see what happens with Crucial and Apple.

But he never did it. It's in, causing no problems, and he figures he can always buy the heat sinks for less than getting the new memory.

Would anyone here own the MiniMac? Its specs are faster than even my WindowsXP tower, except for its hard-drive. My XP comp has an 80gig@7200rpm HD, while the $599 MiniMac has one that's 60gig@5400rpm. Wish Apple would stick a 120gig/7200rpm HD in the MiniMac. Maybe someday they will. I would like to see if I can get one by autumn - like in October.

And I probably won't install anything on top of the ram, either. It's working perfectly :deal

It's not like anything will blow up or something like that. And Mac makes it so easy to see that your memory is running fine.

No big deal, really :D

All things considered, I've decided to wait a bit longer, see how the memory situation pans out (plus inevitable price drops,) universal binaries from Adobe, the possibility of quad core processors and the fact that my current G5 still seems pretty quick (admittedly this has never stopped me in the past.)

Hopefully I can get my visits to the Apple Store, Mac Pro configure page down to two a day, at least I no longer enter my card details before pulling out, it's a tough addiction but it's not as bad as Lcholism.

i got my mac pro on friday and set it up immediately. going from a laptop to a mac pro with a 24" widescreen monitor is a bit of difference. unfortunately i didn't get to play with my mac much because i just had to pack it up last night because i'm leaving for college today.

what i've learned about my mac pro thus far:
it is beautiful, amazingly fast, incredibly heavy, and it grates cheese pretty well too!

THE TOUCH

I just got a new MBP (2Ghz, 512MB) and it feels like everything has a delay, such as opening programs, switching to/from programs, scrolling through emails, etc.

For example, in Entourage, I just switched from "Mail" to "Address Book" and it took ~3 seconds to switch. Or, I just clicked on iTunes in the dock, which is already open, and it takes ~3 seconds to open the screen.

Does this sound like a problem? IMO, my 833Mhz was faster than this! Are the PowerPC programs eating up the speed?

Thanks!

Thanks!Dunno, PC or Mac, can't imagine only using 512mb ram with today's ram hungry programs.

Dunno, PC or Mac, can't imagine only using 512mb ram with today's ram hungry programs.

I know...I regret not adding the additional ram and Hard Drive space when I bought the computer.

I could see it as a ram problem if I had a bunch of programs running but I'm having problems when just one is open.:dunno It's not a bad delay, usually 1-2 seconds, but it's enough to notice and I never had that problem before on my 833mhz/256mb.

Okay...I guess so.:wink

On the PB-G4 you just remove the keyboard. How's it done on the MBP? Also, I've never upgraded ram on a Mac - do you just slap it in and go?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

NOW I get it!

You have a MacBook Pro! This being a thread started on the MacPro (I know, easy to confuse!), I figured you had the tower.

I don't even dare to go back and read what kind of misinformation I've been giving you!

I put RAM in mine, follow the instructions, it's very easy.

Yes, but you have to install it in matching pairs. is that true for old PowerBook G4's too? I hadn't realized that, if so. (and I was about to buy a 1GB stick to upgrade my 512M to 1.5G, which may not work? hmm.)

not true. you can install 1gb stick by itself. As always, use the resources on Crucial.com as a good guide, too.
