Hi! I'm new to the forum. I switched to the sand theme for my homepage and all galleries. Since I switched it has slowed the site down considerably. The pictures load a lot slower, even scrolling up and down is delayed. Any ideas? My site is carey.smugmug.com.
Thanks, Carey

It is an older computer. Windows XP Home and Mozilla is what I'm using. However, my sister commented about it too and she has a new laptop. Not sure which browser she uses. I can switch back to smugmug default and it's a lot faster.

have you tried other themes?
No, no other themes. But, I just tried my site on Internet Explorer and it did seem just fine. Then I went back to Mozilla and it was way slower. So I guess it's Mozilla and not the theme? I'll try a few other themes to see if it makes a difference.

If you are using plain Mozilla you should upgrade to Firefox 1.5 as the Mozilla browser is no longer being maintained.

Okay, so I checked and I was running Firefox 1.0.7. I upgraded to 1.5 and it is still slow when using the sand theme. I switched to several different themes and they were fine. I checked with internet explorer again and it was fine. It is only slow with sand theme and Firefox (though I didn't check every theme, but I did check about 6 different ones). What do you think?

ok time to chime in.....as i have said numerous times, i LOVe sand, but i have held this back for a variety of reasons...
i too feel its slower than others... i do a mouse roll, and after the browser has decided to make some coffee, it finally moves its butt...
i agree, i feel its slower than others...i certainly can't measure it, but i perceive it to be slower.....not quite as responsive as i'd like.....
now for the real interesting thing: seems slower to me in safari than in FF

Adam, are you on an older computer too? Do you have problems on your PC or just your Mac?
Sand was the first theme I wrote for smugmug so i'm sure there is code in there that could be written better. There have also been a lot of interface changes since then and the theme is probably duct-taped pretty good so those two things probably could stand to be addressed.
The thing is that i'm not seeing any slowness...or any pattern to the slowness (one person says firefox is slower than IE, another says that safari is slower than firefox) so its hard for me to justify rewriting the theme. I welcome more feedback on this so i can get a better grasp of what's going on.

Hi Lee,
here are my operating environments:
Main machine: Dual 1.25 Mirrored door drive G4 Desktop (Mac)
Tiger operating system (10.4.7-latest)
1GB RAM
gazillions of HD space
Main Browser Safari
ONLY webdev browser FF 1.5
Now a word about IE Mac - FAWGETABOUTIT!
about 2 years old
Mac G4 PowerBook 1.67
1 GB RAM
gazillions of HD space
Main Browser Safari
ONLY webdev browser FF 1.5
Now a word about IE Mac - FAWGETABOUTIT!
about 1 year old
and...because we can't all be perfect.... :-)
Lenovo ultra-portable (3000 V100) who-know-what new laptop
Windows XP (lets face it - its a windows world out there)
Main browser FF 1.5, also IE 6 to get frustrated by...
I'm certainly not advocating you spend time you go and re-write, but i do feel as i wrote prior... there seems to be a diference in the themes performance....
comparison in safari: sand vs mike lanes's site
NO comparison - sand is jumpy (scrolling) all around - mike's is MUCH smoother to navigate, scroll.....
wintel - les pronounced but ditto....

that's not a real comparison Adam, comparing a theme to a whole site. There are many variables at play there that could skew the results.
Please give me an example of a page that has a really pronounced slowness so i can look, thx.

yes i think your right...and i did say there is a preceived thing here.....
since all my pages are more or less the same, i don't see it any more pronounced than the home page....
thats where i see it the most...the only other area is the index page (when you clikc on the New Production lable, the next page is what i refer to s the index)
and please don't think i'm impugning your theme.. i have a lot of praise for it....but i DO wish i could "Hang" it LEFT justified, instead of centered only....

I have checked out most of the themes now and sand seems to be the only one that is slow. By slow I mean scrolling is delayed and when I click on the thumbs it takes considerably longer than the other themes for the pictures to load. I don't think it is just percieved, it definately is slower. As I mentioned before I only see the problem in FF, not IE. My computer is older, but my sister has a new computer (sorry, I don't have all of the parameter of her computer) and the problem is the same on her computer. I don't mind just using another theme, I just thought other people would be having similar problems, and I really like sand.
