dgrin challenge 26 is here. it will run from monday, november 15th at 12:00:01 a.m. nyc time, through monday, novemeber 29th at noon nyc time. the guest judge for the challenge will be the winner of challenge 25, as determined by the voters.
remember, in order for everyone to benefit, you should be commenting and critiquing for others as much as you expect to get for yourself. you've got to give to get!
challenge 26 is about photography "in your house"
this challenge is a "no photoshop" challenge. only basic editing is allowed. this includes minor adjustments in color, contrast, exposure, sharpness. black and white conversion is allowed (including toning for same). that's it - no cloning, filters, special effects, etc.
your entry must be a photograph taken inside of your house, apartment, flat, tipi, tent, igloo, or cave.

so, how about some ideas for inspiration? a roaring fire in the fireplace, with a side-lit, portrait by firelight. some wine. what can you do with a stack of blue jeans? ever play with a bowl of nuts? are cleaning supplies poisonous? does your furnace look like a scary monster? does your house have a face? upstairs, downstairs. what's in that closet anyhow? do you have a computer? a tv? do you collect perfume bottles? snakeskins? snakeoil? do you own china? silver? crystal? do you have windows? window light? do you own a tripod? how about a big piece of white posterboard for reflecting the light for fill?
this thread, is the one into which you post your challenge entry, and remember, one entry per person, and the photo must be fresh, taken during the challenge period. you must post the date the photograph was taken or it will be deemed ineligible.
all of the rules of the dgrin photo challenges apply, please read them! (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=1338).
***challenge 26 will close to entries on monday, november 29th, 2004 at 12 noon nyc time***
enjoy (challenge) photography,
Brett

Whoops - I just re-read the notes for this particular challenge. It was late last night when I was shooting and posting so I glazed over the "No Photoshop" part for this challenge. I had originally posted an image that was stacked for dynamic range. The image you are seeing here is a single exposure - the "No Photoshop" version with just a tweak of the levels for contrast. Guess I'm not off to a great start... Go ahead and whip me. :whip

Story below
http://nik.smugmug.com/photos/11364423-L.jpg
I was born and grown in the country that does not exist anymore: USSR, Soviet Union, "sovetskij soyuz". The dwelling problem was always one of the direst. You were lucky to have an appartment, let alone 3 room one. And when I'm saying 3 room, I'm saying "3 room", not 3 bedroom (plus family, plus dining, plus an office, etc.). Total footage 380 sq ft total, 3 small rooms, tiny kitchen, 1 split bathroom (toilet separate, sink and bath separate), family of 4. And boy, we were lucky...
One of the typical "when/if we get a better life" family discussions almost always included "a fireplace dream". We imagined how nice would it be to have a fireplace to sit by..
We never got one.. In USSR, I mean. It was next to impossible.
It all changed for me, though, when I moved to USA. My very first appartment already featured a fireplace (I requested it online before move, now how cool was THAT?). Now I live in a beautiful 2-story 2300 sq ft 3 bedroom house which has not one, but TWO fireplaces - one in a big room (shown), one in a family room.
What can I say - "seek, and thou shalt find"!
Cheers to the dreams come true!:1drink

This house was built in 1954 and it has these nifty little gas and ceramic plate heaters in the bathrooms :D . They rock in the winter!! :thumb
This was taken just 30 or so minutes ago after I got out of the shower LOL. (11/27/04)

Unfortunately, I ended up being away from home for over half of this challenge, so I didn't get to improve on this one as I had hoped. In the spirit of keeping the challenges full though, here's my submission:
