Here are a few I had the opportunity to shoot in a rthistle patch by a lake before an overzealous groundskeeper cut them down.

I wish I had a better longer zoom....the baby wrens are about to leave the house.
Can't get close enough for a good shot without mama bitch'in! :uhoh
75-300mm F5.6 doesn't cut the mustard.

I walk softly with a cheap lens. :cry

Excellent! :thumb (seems like an inadequate adjective)

Finches love thistles.....now if I can only figure out how to have the finches without the thistles in my yard! :D

Wow! Those are awesome. Even considering the 500mm lens, how close did you have to get?

As for the bokeh, these thistles were at the edge of a lake inlet so the background was the hilly shore on the other side - 40 or 50 or so feet away.

These a bit cropped, but I was somewhere below 20 feet away - pretty close.

Cheers
Gene

Gene,

These are fantastic. The compositions are just incredible -- I love those thistles. I imagine you spend a lot of time out in the field looking for shots like this. I'd say your diligence paid off. I don't think I've ever seen better goldfinch shots anywhere.

-joel

These 5 photos would make a wonderful set of framed pictures to display on a wall.
