Not sure I'm ready for this, but......

I'm planning on printing one photo from my portfolio several different ways for clients - different sizes, different finishes, etc. This is the photo I'm thinking of doing.

Before you complain about the beard, though, I live in Crested Butte, a very outdoorsy place. The beard probably wouldn't be noticed by most...

Anyway, take your best shot!

Thanks,
Andi

PS Forgot the technical stuff: ISO 200, f1.4, 1/180, canon EOS 10D, natural light....

oh, I love it! :clap I can't' believe I'm the first to say anything about it!!!!:huh

I didn't even notice the beard...it's not distracting, facial hair is back in style ya know?! don't know who decides such things...but nevertheless. :D

this is such a calm and loving photography, really makes you see a connection between the two. I think you caught a wonderful 1/200 of a second in time. fortunately that split second will be remembered forever thanks to your photography!!!! :thumb

I have not seen all of your other photographs of this shoot, so I can't say for sure that THIS IS THE ONE you should get printed out in all different sizes....however, I'm sure they'll like it. was it only he and his daughter or were their more people involved in the shoot? because if there was more, you'll want to print a photo including them all. you don't want one to feel left out of the only printed photos they receive from you. and if you get that one printed out, (expecting there may have been more people) then print one out with the baby and only the other person - - - evens things out.

okay....sorry that took so long. hope it helps!

oh yeah, it looks like it's cropped to a weird size and won't fit exactly on standards like 4X6 or 5X7...am I crazy? it is past my bedtime...:rofl

- RE

also sorry about all of the smilies...I've been overly smilie-happy for the last few days....HAHA!:rofl :D :wxwax :huh

...you may as well have it..:-)

Pros:

composition
charactersCons:

very flat
rather soft, or, shall I say, OOF, since part of man's beard seems to be in focus (hence - no special soft treatment was applied) and the rest of the picture is not (and the beard is definitely not a subject here:-)
for some reason - and that's also strictly MHO - I don't like sepia in this caseHTH

Thanks for your replies!

RE - This is my husband and youngest daughter... I actually have a similar photo (by someone else - a pro) from when my oldest was about this age so they work well together. This also explains the sepia as the other image is in sepia..... So I actually will have TONS more opportunities to take pics of both girls and their dad - and no one will feel bad! LOL! :D (But it's definitely something to think about!)

Thanks for your kind remarks... I just love the emotion in this shot. It's just so sweet! Thanks for your feedback!

Nikolai - Sheesh! What do you think? This is a whipping post or something? LOL!

Thanks for the nice pros.... Now to answer your cons - and ask....

When you say "very flat", are you referring to the contrast? If I bump that up (and this seems to be something I'm not so great at), will that fix what you are talking about?? Or is this "flatness" something that's just part of the image and unfixable?
I will do a few things to try to "fix" the OOF issues. I have had this happen on one other occasion and did a little PSing and it ended up turning out okay, although not perfect (as you can imagine).
The sepia was chosen to match another image taken by a professional of my other daughter and husband. I will try it as a more pure B&W to see what kind of results I get.I will post a new one later on since I have no time currently.

Thanks so much for your insightful feedback! I truly appreciate it!:D

momma,

We try to stay away from how-to here in the Whipping Post, so that it stays centered on critique. The forum Photoshop Shenanigans would be a great place for you to ask that question. Post the pic there and ask about boosting the contrast and any other questions you have.

Oh, I wasn't trying to ask HOW to boost constrast, just whether or not that was what he was trying to say... It this photo flat because of lack of contrast or is it because the lighting isn't good and therefore there isn't much to do to fix it?

I actually understand how to boost contrast...

Is what I'm asking still within the rules? Thanks!:D (I'm new here so i dont' want to mess up!)
