we have an gander who has decided he is the protector of all the ducklings that hatched a few weeks ago. he wont let them out of his sight, follows them everywhere and brings them into the barn at night and then hisses at me for trying to feed them. if he can't see them outside, he honks and they actually come running.....

most of them are just a mish mash of different breeds we have had in the last few years. we have a mallard drake, and had some call ducks, plus we have a runner drake. they are silly looking ducks who stand straight up.

one of the mama ducks got taken by a critter, but we don't know what. goose chases away the other mom, though sometimes she manages to sneak into the group along with her mate.

mama duck, before goose took charge

Thanks for the additional photos. I don't think I've ever seen a runner duck, they sure are odd looking! I remember the first time I saw a Moscovy duck at a duck pond near where I used to work... someone was nice enough to tell me they're good eating... like I didn't need to know that.

I can't believe the gander chases the mother away!

What an opportunity you have to get some neat photos, as long as Mr. Gander stays out of your way! LOL...

thanks, everyone, i really do enjoy the ducks......

we used to have muscovies, but they were just SO messy, not that the littles ones arent.....

good moms, too, they would hatch a ton of eggs at one time
