Hi Y'all,
I've been doing the 125 mile run to St. Augustine for most of my shooting lately but I still have the wetlands 10 minutes from my house.
The Black-bellied Ducks have returned
http://behret.smugmug.com/photos/73905829-O.jpg
This GBH was faced with the age old question of "should I make it into a belt or just chow down"? I think he choose the lunch option
http://behret.smugmug.com/photos/73905853-O.jpg
I hung out with this osprey a bit
http://behret.smugmug.com/photos/73905858-O.jpg
http://behret.smugmug.com/photos/73905863-O.jpg
until he decided to go for some take-out
http://behret.smugmug.com/photos/73905865-O.jpg
I ran into an ummature osprey hanging out at THE TREE

Taking a break from reptile consumption the GBH posed for me.

WOW!
I attempted to get some "bird with food ala Harry shots", yesterday. Actually, I was attempting BIF shots, but the birds were catching crabs!
I had my 400, left the extender at home (not intentionally).
I will post them, but they are weak compared to these!
Very cool!

Harry,
It must be nice to live in such a target rich environment. You always seem to have ample subjects.
And you always post such beautiful examples of the birds in your area!

Thanks Tom. We have around 8 of them at the wetlands. This is the time of the year when they come in to mate and nest. They will usualy have 12-20 ducklings per pair but the casualty rate is very high by the time they migrate away.

Do you ever take a bad shot??? WOW, these are great. I didn't not realize GBH ate snakes... now I'm a little worried of hanging around them... I don't want to run into snakes I can't see first ;)

Wonderful as usual Harry. I'm looking forward to the shots of the black bellied ducklings. You get some great shots at the rookery but I just love the variety you get at Vierra. Have the Caracara been around much lately? I've got a pic to post tonight for you. I just back from Missouri so I haven't had time to process it yet.

Hey Scott,
I had no idea what I was moving into when we built our house down here. It is truly bird central. Thanks for the kind words.

I take lots of bad shots, I just make sure no one ever sees them. :D GBH will eat anything they can swallow. The only time I've seen a snake in the wetlands has been when one was being chewed on by some bird. I would say if you want to be safe from snakes just hang around herons and egrets, :rofl

Thanks Nick the rookery is cool but nothing beats the Viera Wetlands/Merritt Island/Orlando Wetlands for the variety of shots. If the black-bellied whistling dicks keep too the schedules of the last two years we should start seeing some ducklings next month.
The caracaras have been flying through and a friend got a shot of them with a juvenile caracara in tow.

Thanks Dallas. I'm not sure of the snake ID. If definitely was not one of our black snakes but when I tried to get closer to ID the snake the GBH flew off. :uhoh

Thanks Al. I did better last year than the prior year. I'm hoping that they will keep on upping their survival rate.
