So we took the kids to the zoo yesterday. Those of you that hate zoo photography might want to press the next-thread button now. :wink

It was an overcast gray day and the lighting was awful. I shot at ISO800 and 1600 mostly wide-open with the Canon 100-400 IS L. Some speeds were very slow. All hand-held. Image Stabilization saved the day. This next one was shot at 1/50th of a second.

I'm pinching myself at how well the IS works. I've got some more pictures from the outing here: http://www.jacara.com/cpg144/thumbnails.php?album=11
If you visit the gallery, you can see the EXIF data by pressing the "I" button near the upper-left corner of the screen. The EXIF will appear below the pictures after that.

Thanks for looking.

Joel I checked out your gallery. These are some of the best zoo shots I've seen in a while!!! You nailed some tough exposures, like on the snowy owl. I love the shot of the lemurs!!! Most of them don't look like zoo shots at all, must be a nice zoo. The shot of the condor is a heart-breaker! Your lens performed wonderfully. It looked like you were right next to them and at their eye level. Good job!!! :clap

Susan, thanks for the really nice feedback. This is the NY Bronx Zoo. It's an ok zoo. I recall other zoos, San Diego for one, as being better. There was either glass or wire mesh between me and the animals in most cases. It's amazing how that stuff disappears though.

All very nice shots, Joel. :thumb Not clear whether the tiger is growling or yawning :D. I really wish you hadn't mentioned that lens, though. I was doing a little daydreaming the other day about my next acquisition and thought, that would be nice but it's a bit pricey. Now I see that it's very nice indeed. Hmmm...

Regards,

Thanks, Richard. This lens is a blast. It's probably not as sharp as the 400 F5.6 prime in a controlled environment. However, the flexibility of the 100-400 range combined with excellent IS make this lens a real keeper for me. It can definitely do things that the 400 prime can't. Telephotos are addicting. I really would like to have both of them. :wxwax
