I love taking pictures in an airplane. Oh well.
One of my favorite shots, just because I've never flown over the Grand Canyon! I haven't adjusted anything on these shots, so they're not the best. Actually forgot about them until Andy's suggestion. Thanks Andy!!

Hey Andy,

That first shot reminds me of when I was doing some work up in Northen Quebec, taking these little commuter planes (between Montreal and Alma). Funny thing was, they would read the safety stuff in French then as an after thought, say does anyone speak english. LOL

Mt. Hamilton - as seen from the air. I had the exposure comp set at -1.0 and the white buildings are still blown out (late afternoon, early evening). Sitting up in the open like that, they were almost like mirrors reflecting the sun. I tweaked the brightness and contrast a bit (the originals are worse):

If you bring up the original (full) size and look in the brown grassy area (lower right portion of the pic) you can see some of the twisty road leading up to the observatory...no wonder it's a favorite with local riders.

http://thwack.smugmug.com/photos/10948525-M.jpg (http://thwack.smugmug.com/photos/10948525-O.jpg)

Here's a shot taken from the last row of seats looking forward during flight. I think Andy's plane was considering larger than what I was in... :)

http://thwack.smugmug.com/photos/10948496-M.jpg

And here's a shot showing one of the problems trying to take pics from the air. We were flying over a local reservoir that I fish in from time to time. The water level is really low and that exposed some structure that I wanted to record (so I can find the little island in Spring when the water is up and the bass are hanging around it).

I had to shoot out the left side of the plane and the sun wasn't cooperating. That's not a double-exposure, it's my reflection on the window (which didn't show up in the tiny 1.5" LCD screen on the back of my camera...d'oh):

http://thwack.smugmug.com/photos/10948447-M.jpg

Oh well, at least I know where that island is now... :D

As we entered the pattern for landing, I had to sun behind me and grabbed a quick picture of the airport we flew out of...Reid Hillview in San Jose, CA.

If you've ever flown through Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, Reid Hillview is sort of the opposite. :)

I am like a kid in a plane, always looking out the window, watching the land move by. I took this some time ago using a 1.3mp digi. All my air travel shots need alot of work to look decent. This is of San Bernardino mountains.

Galleries here (http://www.photo.lynnesite.com/gallery/120152) and Alaskan ones from a float plane here (http://www.photo.lynnesite.com/gallery/118388). This was taken Labor Day weekend when my DH and I went to spend our anniversary in Sedona, AZ. He told me that he wanted to go up in a Cessna for my present to him. WHY would anyone want to do that? :dunno I caved and went on the flight with him.

Taken with Sony F828, and not the best shot. I'm still learning and was having a hard time taking pictures while I was constantly wondering if I was going to need the cute little white bag in the seat pocket in front of me. :sick

Oh yeah, I'm still kind of a lurker, but I have learned that I still have alot to learn. You guys are good at what you do!:thumb

Hey, Stef, glad to you are delurking.

Your shot is like an advertisement for something I'm doing. It's a reading group for a new book: Photoshop LAB Color : The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace The first thing this book teaches is a recipe for shots just like this. (The book isn't called "Canyon" for nothing.)

Using this recipe, it too me under a minute to modify your original to this:

http://rutt.smugmug.com/photos/37303791-O.jpg

using these LAB curves:

http://rutt.smugmug.com/photos/37303827-S.jpghttp://rutt.smugmug.com/photos/37303810-S.jpghttp://rutt.smugmug.com/photos/37303818-S.jpg

I think that if you (anybody) are going to learn to do one thing with photoshop, it should be this. Tune in on the reading group, here: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=18203

Rutt i hope to get some 10-22 mm shots for you today re its sharpness.

In 30 words or less...in LAB how do you know whether to move A to the left & B to the right or vise versa or the same way as you did here.

ie is it just eye or is there a set formular ?

Remember ..keep it simple for me.

By steepening curves:

A will increase magenta and green.

B will increase yellow and blue.

You can go by eye, or the numbers. Positive A values are magenta, negative are green. Positive B are yellow and negative are blue. You have to look at the colors and think about what's possible in the shot. Is it possible for that part of the shot to have some blue in it? Or that much?

Is that something that I can do in Photoshop Elements? I have it, and to be honest, have NO idea what I am doing. Like I said, I am new to this. But if I can get those results out of Elements, cool! If not, it will be awhile before I can justify spending the money on PSCS. (I wish I had it, though)

David is on the money, but I have a "For Dummies" answer.

Start off doing the simple thing. Steepen both the A and B curves equally and symetrically, by moving each of the four endpoints inward somewhere between 10 and 20 percent.

(Exactly 30 words.)

Most of the time this will be great, but there are certain things that just have to be certain colors or the shot will look wrong (David's impossible colors). Fleshtones are the most important. Vegetation. Sky. Check the values for these with the color sampler. Fleshtones have to have both A and B positive with B at least as high as A. Vegetation has to have A negative and B positive, A more negative than B positive is better. Clear blue sky needs A slightly negative and B strongly negative. Clouds should be neutral or perhaps a little B negative (except sunsets.)

OK, Gus, now move this whole discussion to David's Chapter 3 discussion where it belongs, please. Make a link to my original post in your question. Thanks.

I clean forgot about these I did 13th July on the way from UK to Canada - I was very lucky with conditions. There are quite a few here, but it's what was honed from about a hundred, so they're pretty good, I think (without wanting to sound immodest). There's always the problem of smudge/scratches/steamed up windows in an aircraft, isn't there, which is why I took so many. Hope you like them.

Excellent photos - I'm not having much luck doing multiple pics as you have set up here, I managed one picture and then tried to send others by successively using the 'reply' button - one at a time. Consequently there are about 10 replies by me with no pics on. I must be really stupid, but how do you do multiple photos like you have done?
ps - I'll take this opportunity to post another pic, if that's ok!
Use a link from your smugmug gallery instead of an attachment. Do you see the little icon above the reply text box that looks like a mountain with a yellow sky and a moon in it? Click that and put in the web address of an image.

Also consider posting your best few shots and then let people go to the associated gallery. 10 shots is (IMHO only) a bit overkill. :dunno Just saying.

This thread makes me wish I'd done a better job shooting Manila, Philippines. One of the most densely populated areas of the world, it would have been cool to catch that aspect as well as some of you folks have displayed in this thread. I got pics, but with my film camera, and I don't have a scanner. Mostly smog and dense city.

To all
I have several pretty good air travel photos at this address http://neiluj.smugmug.com/gallery/788301

Please peruse at your leisure - it's easier this way and there is a better quality in the gallery anyway (not limited to 117Kb/pic)!

Hope you like 'em.

I thought I'd bump this thread with a book review :thumb

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/covers/windowseat.s.gif

Julieanne Kost uses her shots from the window seat of an airplane as examples
in a discussion of photography and the creative thought process.

Surprisingly, the book has more photographs than I would have thought. Many
are of places I recognize from my own travels around the country in the window
seat.

The author starts out with a list of things that contribute to the creative
process. Such things as mastering the tools, being open to things that come
your way and my favorite, sharing what you know and learning from others.

From there, we learn about the desire to be creative given the demands of
travel and subsequently through the process of creating a book.

The appendix does give information on data management and some on editing
in PS but otherwise, this is not a book that will teach you step-by-step how
to be creative. I found it usefull to contemplate some of the things in the
first chapters as I looked at the photographs in the book (I would guess the
book is maybe eighty five percent pictures).

I enjoyed the book. It's a quick read and you'll enjoy looking at the pictures
as you think about the creative process.

AGGGRRRRRR, I just wrote a letter to double exposure... Her pics are great, nice, beautiful, but I hate the descending tone she applies to readers.
She is called a genius, and frankly, I have seen shots here from air from smugmuggers that are as good as hers. Not everybody gets to travel though every week.

My feathers are ruffled because she gives the impression that she is the only one to take pics out of a plane window. I hated it when she wrote : "most people don't even bother to look outside". DOH... I bother, and I did it from the first trip I took in a plane, and that was before she started shooting.

I had the same problems she has, not sitting in a window seat, although I always ask for one, stewards telling you to close down, sitting on the wing, night travel... I have seen it too.

So it bugs me that she gets all the credit and is called a genius...
(Yes, I am jaleous...):rofl :rofl

I think she's right about not looking out though. I can spend the entire trip
wondering where I am based on city lights. Others don't often share my
enthusiasm :D

Certainly the window seat shots are just a vehicle for her creativity and
shouldn't (IMHO) be viewed as anything special.

Andy and I met her at PMA and from our short conversation, I don't think she's
at all condescending.

Good, then she comes over better in real life... I don't know her and have not met her, so maybe she is the most friendly person on earth... I was just venting. Having said that, there are some passages in the book (that I bought BTW) that I find really condescending... Maybe I need to read it again.

Found an old shot from about 2 years ago, taken from the plane window when flying either to or from Denver USA. :D

I have no idea how many thousands of feet in the air we were, but the image was soooooooooo ghosted out, I had orginally planned on dumping it.

This edit is probably over saturated, but gosh you can really see just how barren the land was that we were flying over, I believe we were very close to the Canyons that form the Grand Canyon if my memory serves me correctly :scratch ......... enjoy.... Skippy
