We had a major database problem. I believe it is fixed now, but we are way behind on image processing.

I have had upload crap out on me twice in mid-stream. What did make it still shows as processing. Is it safe to assume that those pics will eventually show up?

I'm also experiencing a very slow smugmug site today. Can't run a slide show (lengthy pauses between images) and even viewing images in a gallery at medium size is taking over 60 seconds.

Please keep us posted as to when this will be resolved.

Perhaps I've missed them, but other than a response to this thread, I haven't seen any official announcement as to the problem and when it will be resolved.

Thanks.

I believe it actually is fixed, but we need to catch up on processing images. We have about 10,000 images waiting to be processed and until we catch up, it will be quite slow.

I'm sorry folks, we're doing our best to get this sorted out.

Not exactly ideal... If you don't mind waiting a bit, it would be nice to help us work on the queue first.

Patience....

With 11074 photos in the queue, your photos won't be processed any time soon.

Orange you taking this a bit far? Are you trying to make us all green with envy with your typographical prowess?

Call me a simple man, but I think text should only be colored for a specific reason, that's all. :D

Yep.. it's still quite slow.
Besides that i get tons of 'connection exceptions' from the Java Uploader and a bunch of 'File had errors and could not be processed.' (about 20% of my pics that i have tried to upload) are reported as well... and i know the files are OK.

I guess the server can't keep up?

So where are we at today (Tuesday)? Responce time seems to be a little better. Most of the 115 photos I posted yesterday are in the folder I posted them to but 4 still say they are being processed.

Most of what I uploaded yesterday got processed overnight. However, about a dozen pics either got screwed up or showed as still processing. I deleted all of those and uploaded them again without problem. Response time looks normal to me. YMMV.

Cheers,

My new photos uploaded no problem but today I am having problems viewing certain photos in my galleries. I loaded this gallery a few days ago and had no problem viewing the photos shortly after they loaded. BUt today, many within the gallery are not loading. I click the photo and it just ends up endlessly attempting to load. Are there still problems today? Thanks for your help!

Guess what. I tried just getting out of Firefox all together. Then I reloaded Firefox, went back in to Smugmug gallery, and voila! No problems. Hope this really easy fix helps others.

I'm getting some timeout issues and occasional "photo not found" will show up where my image should be. Is there some maintenance going on? It's 8:35 CST on May 30th. Thanks Scott

Thanks for this advice. I was getting a bit freaked with yesterday's new gallery being suddenly unavailable. It was fine, all present and correct a few hours ago, now even more older galleries have disappeared and the new one only shows a few of the approx 400 thumbnail images and gives a "picture can't be found" message for missing ones. Disappointing as this gallery has created the most hits plus email enquiries we have had for prices. Will we need to re-upload the ones which have disappeared or might it right itself overnight (being almost midnight Tuesday here)?

I just saw "photo not found" on several of my thumbnails. When the page loaded, 3 thumbnails displayed as an image that said "photo not found". When I opened a gallery and paged through it, an occasionally thumb in the smugmug style would still show as "photo not found". The problem is intermittent. Sometimes when I returned to the same gallery, the thumb that used to show "photo not found", fixes itself. FYI, these are images that were uploaded Friday night, so this is a problem on an existing gallery, not something uploaded during the Monday problem time.

I captured some screen shots of the "photo not found" in my galleries and I've uploaded them so I can link them here, but they are not showing up in my gallery yet (still some upload slowness, I guess).

EDIT: Here are the screen shots:

I uploaded a whole heap of internet ready (read small c.a. 150kb) files last night and expected them to be there this morning and half of them are missing.

I've also been uploading full size JPGs over the last 4+ hours and so far only 158 have gone up, whic is slower than usual..

Plus all my galleries are in a mess today.. All the orders are screwed up. There is definitely something not quite right..

Any trouble reported with items dropping from the shopping carts? Come on guys/gals this is crunch time (end of season) for me.

Yesterday and today, I tried to set the Custom Pro Pricing on my latest gallery. Each time I received a message from IE that it couldn't find the requested page and was I typing in the right address. Since I was clicking on a preset address, I knew that couln't be the case. I tried a different gallery with the same effect. Then I received a message "Temporary Service Interruption". Hopefully the pricing will come back when the service does.

Both my Smugmug sites report a "down page" that says there's a temporary service interruption at Smugmug.

Any idea how long this will be?

No, we don't have an idea. Onethumb took it down for repairs, and he hopes to have it done as soon as possible. Both he and Wireless are working to make this as brief an interruption as possible.

Thanks in advance for your patience while we work through it.

Hard to post when you need an update from us most because we have all hands who can fix the problem fixing the problem.

Hardware malfunctions all the time and usually we're able to adjust without service interruptions, but this one is more difficult. We're doing everything in our power to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

And we're terribly sorry about the problems it's causing everyone.

Thanks,

We're not through it yet. You may have noticed that keywords no longer appear on people's homepages. Our engineers think that a massive number of keyword hits may have been causing the problem, so keywords have been temporarily removed from homepages. Sorry!

I would recommend that everyone stops further work until the problems are resolved.

I would like SM to put a similar statement on their website as well.

But until then perhaps a sticky "Announcements and General Support Info Thread" thread in this forum would be useful to post official SM information (e.g. only SM staff allowed to post) ...
or a
sticky Maintenance thread...

oh wait there are threads but no SM info.... :rolleyes

Best wishes guys I know the "joys" :bash of trying to bring production servers back under pressure and I don't envy you. Remember to document what you did and a have a debriefing after the crisis to prevent it from happening again.

Perhaps its time for redundant hardware AND software AND database AND internet connections to avoid this happening in the future?

We're back in action, I believe. I'm busy making sure we're back, so I'll keep it brief. :)

(BTW, we do have redundant hardware AND software AND database AND networking. This was (and still is, we're working around it manually) a huge bug in our database vendor's software.)

Sorry for the outage ... I can promise you that I've experienced an order of magnitude more anguish over this than you have, though I know that's no consolation.
