An excellent testament to the capability of the D50!
For a landscape shot such as this, I usually like to see more of a wide angle, like showing more of the slope of the mountain.
Everything else is fantastic -- the color, composition, contrast. Awesome shot.

move along, nothing to whip here. :D wicked shot.
did you pp or was that natural lighting?
I disagree about using a wider lens, it draws the eye to the hamlet/farm and makes that the subject rather than being a landscape shot.

I would crop off a tiny bit of the bottom, but other than that, I love it!!!

Wonderful light and an interesting scene. It reminds me of a Breughel landscape, though nothing terrible is happening in it. :D I don't see much to whip here, though I agree with Saurora that cropping just a hair off the bottom would help. There is a small horizontal lighter bit that is somewhat distracting and could easily be eliminated. Very nice job. :clap

damn bro... i'm very jealous; i'd be super interested to hear a lashing of this, cause I can't see flaws (other than the mini-crop :thumb)
but, i'd say even better than being near flawless technically is that it is a strong attention getter
the mood (mostly) dark & stormy looms large over the small (and slightly brighter) village (or estate?) [edit: looks like a cul de sac]
your site is coming along great too... i'll probably be stealing some ideas (I like the 'View All' option :):, and the pulldown menus are slick)
bravo,
LeDude

I agree with the mini-crop of the bottom, but I can't find anything otherwise. The pic has a majestic feeling thanks to the lighting. Nice.

Lovely view :thumb :thumb
I agree with the mini-crop on the bottom (getting rid of that sliver of brown in the foreground). I also think you may get a bit more pop from this image if you use a small amount of Curves adjustment (either RGB or Lab). Maybe even the "fog/haze" USM settings (20%, 60, 1). It also looks a little dark in some areas, which Curves can help you brighten :-)
Still, it is a lovely scene and as mentioned, where's da Orcs.....LOL

What a wonderful picture, looks like a painting by an old master, I love it. Also spent a strange night in Kamloops back in '98 when travelling through on the Rocky Mountineer Train with my Wife on our Honeymoon. I'd love to get back to BC sometime, it's our favourite part of the world.

Hi, Oakley
Great Photo! :clap
The only thing I would do is crop a small amount from the top and bottom.
Keep up the good work! :thumb

I agree with you about normally using a wide-angle for landscapes - but I think the portrait view on this shot is what makes it stand out for me.
Thanks for the comments!

Hi Adrian - thanks for commenting on my photo.
To answer your question - I shot the photo in RAW and applied some WB, exposure, curves, and all that fun stuff in my RAW conversion software. But the shot really is pretty close to how I saw it with my own eye.

Thanks LeDude - my site needs a lot more work, but I'm getting there, and I think I have some good ideas...it's just making CSS do what I say, damnit!!!
Good luck and of course you can use whatever you want from my site...

Thanks for the post Steve - I'm surprised that you think this photo needs MORE pop. I applied curves in my RAW program to get the shadows and highlights just where I want them. Perhaps another time I'll take a look at the other specific suggestions you have and see how they change the image.

Cool - I have a good friend who just started working on the Rocky Mountineer Train. She loves it and says anyone who travels on that train has a great time. Seems like you'd attest to that. Unfortunatley, there was a derailment a couple of weeks ago - but thank god no one was killed - or even injured!
Thanks for your post! And you're welcome back in to BC anytime you wish!!!

Ryan,
Ya know it wasn't really "pop" I was suggesting. More like "clarity" or "crispness". If I remember correctly, the background had a somewhat "hazy" look to it. That's the part I believe I was mainly addressing. Although, as an ex-Sony shooter, I loves saturated colors :wink Nothing better than a landscape shot for boosting sat using Velvia or Provia actions :lust

It's a great journey, we've actually been back to BC 4 times since our honeymoon, it's our absolute favourite part of the world, however we now have a 6 month old baby so it may be a little while before we return.
