I had my 1D Mark II set to Tv mode at 1/640. I knew this would be massively under-exposed but I didn't care, I was just trying something. To my surprise it set the aperture wide-open and slowed the shutter down enough to make a proper exposure.
Why?

See the manual: It's called "safety shift" - this is from a 20D manual but I'm certain it's the same on a 1D Mark II.

And silly me went to the section in the manual for Tv Mode expecting to learn everything about Tv Mode in the section that describes Tv Mode. :D
