The 1D Mark II has some settings for the in-camera JPG that appear to not be documented well. For Tone Curve, what do the options Standard, TCD 1, TCD 2 and TCD 3 mean?

For this weekend I will be shooting RAW until I get a grasp on the in-camera JPG settings. (I'm not looking forward to 3,000+ RAW photos in one weekend). For the curious, I'd like to eventually find a setting that roughly mimmicks my 20D in the Parameters 1 setting, or as a "Standard" picture style. Neutral tone, bump +1 on sharpness, contrast and saturation.

(actually I might shoot RAW + small JPG, use the JPG to quickly sort and judge the photos by)

So far I'm thinking a color matrix of 3 (high saturation). For Set 1 parameters I'm not sure what tone curve to use, but thinking 4 on sharpness and +1 on contrast. JPG quality at 10.

Bill,

I found this:

"Q : What is the "Tone curve data"?
A : Tone curve data is what the EOS-1D uses to adjust the color density and brightness of the original image captured by the image sensor (input) to produce an adjusted image (output). The EOS-1D's standard tone curve can be modified by the user with the supplied driver software. The custom tone curve data mentioned in this guide has been tuned for noise reduction.
Q : How do I upload the tone curve data to the camera?
A : A : Once you have downloaded the Custom Tone Curve data from this Web site, you will need to follow the instructions for uploading Custom Tone Curves to the EOS-1D. Please refer to the EOS-1D Software Instructions starting on page 3-24 [Setting the Parameters] for more details."

I found it here:

Basically, it appears to be a very similar in function to the "Curves" function in PhotoShop, allowing that type of control over in-camera processing of the RAW data, or tagging the data to allow subsequent "curves" processing automation by RAW processing software.

It looks like a very desirable function, once you have developed the custom Tone Curve data set to help process noise and shadow/highlight emphasis different from the default curves.

Yes it does look like a desirable function, and maybe one of these days I can play with the curves and come up with my own curve setting. (Doubtful, I'm not very good with curves). But what I still can't find is any sort of documentation on the four existing curves. I can find their names (standard, TCD 1, 2 and 3) but no description whatsoever on what that means.

Or, are TDC 1, TCD 2 and TCD 3 the names of the user-defined curves, and have no meaning by default by themselves?

Bill.

Did you find this relating to the File Viewer Utility?
