View Full Version : Music/Flash stuff on SmugMug???

I was just browsing some of the "very well done smugmug sites" and came across Sarah Stevens' Sweet Pea Pics site (http://sweetpeapics.smugmug.com/) ....wow, what a great website! The most unusual thing about it is that she seems to have 2 sites in 1, an html and a flash site. (I only discovered this when, after browsing a bit, I clicked on her header to go back to the homepage and was given a choice of entering either either html or flash.)

What really caught my eye (ear, actually) was that on the "flash" site she has MUSIC playing. This is right near the top of my list of DREAM features for my website.

So my questions are:

Can a flash site like Sarah's be 'powered by smugmug' as well or does it have to be its own entity?

Can I add music to my site?

And while we're at it, what the hell is Flash, anyway?

Feel free to point me to any relevant threads. Thanks!

Hi Rob,

So my questions are:

Can a flash site like Sarah's be 'powered by smugmug' as well or does it have to be its own entity?It will have to be hosted somewhere else. Smugmug doesn't allow hosting other things than images. If you have an off-site storage space, you are be able to integrate it into smugmug if that's something you want. But alot of stuff can be done without flash.

Can I add music to my site?Yes, it is possible.

If you are thinking of integrating music on your site, you have to be absolutely sure you really want to do this. I am more than willing to help you, but be aware of the fact that music integration on a site is actually at or near the top of the "annoying things when looking at websites" list. So if you are wanting to do this, atleast make sure you have a user choice to switch if of, and don't let it start at full blast without giving viewers a clue as to what is happening.

And while we're at it, what the hell is Flash, anyway?Flash is a program created by Macromedia. You can design vector based, interactive files. They can be 'static image type' file, or you can get 'dynamic movie type (http://www.andreaswannerstedt.se/presentintern/)' files. It was originally designed for narrow-band, since the files are relatively small, and can be started while still loading. It can also be combined with programming. In this example (http://www.navtrainer.com) i made very simple graphics, but there is a lot of programming behind it to make it work like it does. Flash does not equal better, it's mainly different, and it requires you to be able to design flash aswell.

Hope this helps some, if you have any more questions, let us know.

If you have to ask, you'll proabably want to stay away from it.

At least for now.

Ivar-
You said it was possible to integrate music with a slideshow if the music itself is hosted elsewhere. Within smugmug, is there a certain HTML code we use to call the music from the other site ?
If so, where do we stash such HTML code?

Thanks!

:wave Hi Neil,

Follow my FAQ, the FAQ :D
HTML goes in any caption, description, or your bio. Any html code goes sandwiched in between <html> and </html> tags.... so, if you were putting such code in an gallery description, you'd do this:

<html>
blah blah blah my words are here.
code code code code my html
more words
etc
</html>

Good luck, holler if you need help :D
