Something a little different.

I asked my wife what she thought of the shot and she said "too bad the branches are blocking so much of the bird". I kind of like it the way it is because it shows the bird more in its element. Plus, technically it's more interesting because I had to manual focus on the bird. I wonder if some shots are simply more interesting to photographers than non-photogs. :scratch

i like it, however maybe a different perspective on the crop... ie one that doesnt center the blue jay...

Usually I don't like the obstructed shots but every once in awhile a shot showing the context is effective. I posted a similar shot of a green heron awhile back. You ahve to show the context sometimes so folks can appreciate what it takes to get an unobstructed shot.

Thanks, Troy. I'm not overly happy with the centered bird either. That's the entire image though, so if I crop, I'll be losing part of picture. Might be worth playing around with though. Thanks for the idea.

I lke it the way it is..........be bold to break the rules, and the picture becomes supprising good. I just don't ask my wife anymore. Good shot Joel.

Joel I agree with Harry. You are showing the true nature of birds, to hide behind branches so we cannot get a clear shot. I still have not yet gotten one single shot of a blue jay so you are one up on me.

Thanks for the comments, Harry, Dick and Nick! I appreciate them.
I'm not sure why I like this shot so much. I think I like the abstractness of the seed pods (or whatever they are), combined with the lighting. The blue jay just adds something to focus on.

Thanks, William. That's how I feel about the shot as well. It certainly wasn't meant to be just a picture of a blue jay. Otherwise I would have posted something like this:
