I and your volunteer helpers get a zillion private messages asking for customization help.

We won't answer them in private message. I've asked everyone to post new threads with the PMs, and answer the questions in the open forum.

WHY?

A question by ONE (you) can be answered by MANY (me, and all of the fine helpers on Dgrin). The answer by ONE can benefit MANY (you and the others that are new, or haven't yet asked the question, or maybe they find the thread by searching. And just imagine if a few of us here got hundreds of PMs a day :uhoh

You do yourself a disservice, too - I'm not the only one that can answer - and I have been known to be incorrect ...once or twice :lol3

So, please - no private message questions for customization help.

Thank you for 100% cooperation and understanding.

Thanks,

:wave Hi JR

In my FAQ:
http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=26043

#27
http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=223080&postcount=2

The part that's left is called the "mini-footer" and that cannot be removed. You can remove the cartlink and login link if you like, that's described here (#28 on the FAQ):

Hi Andy,
I love your 10-13-2005, 01:06 PM post with examples of people's
websites. This thread was linked the smugmug as examples of smugmugpower
users' sites. But I cannot seem to get my page to look anything like
these. I particularily liked thepupil.com, brandolinoimaging and Daniel
Desjardins as well as yours! I like them because they have a "splashpage"
(I think that's the right word for it). How can I accomplish this? I
have been reading all sorts of html and css guides on digital grin and
elswhere but can't seem to find an answer. Can you help me? Or know
where I can find help?
Thanks,
Maiwyck
p.s. I upgraded to power user because of these examples but I'm
concerned now that these may only be professional users

You can do all this with Power account.

Sure we can help you. Start a thread, with specific, detailed, and exact questions. Don't be shy! You'll get help, I promise. Don't forget to include your website.

A couple of us are away thru Sunday so your help may take a little longer in coming, but IT WILL come I promise you.

you to show me how to do my home web page on smugmug (customizing

Thank you very much in considering this request.

No, but you can post a message in the forums, and there folks here (Mike Lane, JerryR and others) who are qualified and will do the services for a fee.

Hi Andy,

I wonder whether I could ask a big favour?

I saw your forum post about a 'magic IE fix' to a problem with
pixelated
images in IE.

I have a logo that appears perfectly in both Firefox and Opera, but is
horribly pixelated in IE on a 1920x1200 laptop (I haven't been able to
test it on other machines yet).

The site is only local at present, but I think you were indicating that
it was a CSS problem, so I've pasted in below the code. The final line
of the HTML excerpt is the image that gets pixelated by IE. I have
already tried it with and without the size information, with no effect.

If you're able to advice, that would be much appreciated!

You need the IE png fix. It looks like this:

filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader (enabled=true,
sizingMethod=scale src='http://yourfilename.png');

Andy

Sent a pm but got an error message so sending an email.

My gallery is jamfoto.smugmug.com

I did a few customizations but they only work on some galleries. Can
you let me know what I am doing wrong.

Changes I made were

1. customize the right click warning
2. remove the smugmug logo from the header
3. removed the slideshow icon from the header

THey show up in the EMC/Vellum, gallery but the Santa Cruz Gallery
works fine.Thank you

You have hide owner turned on in customize gallery. Or you have appearance set to "smugmug" not "custom." Check these gallery settings and you'll be fine.

Also, where exactly does this code go on the webpage? In the head serction?

Good afternoon.
I think this is something I ask you and you, please re-direct wherever you think it is best. Thank you.
I have now 2 sites with you. In the customize window I tried to change my e-mail [to be the same in both sites] and it seems to me that the system does not allow me to.
I wish to receive the mail from both sites in the same recipient.
Is that possible please ?

Well I don't get many PMs about stuff, but here is one that I got recently:

Mike, I saw the link you provided in the customization thread to add a horizontal nav bar from MaxDesgin's website. I have not yet tried it, but it seems simple enough.

My question is once you get the nav bar completed, how to you create the links to each word you've included in the bar?

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm really new to this. Again, sorry to bug you. If you have a link or two to which you can refer me for a tutorial or something that'd be great.

Thanks, Dan
Hey Dan, you can create a link in a navbar just like you create a link in any html site. The link syntax looks like this (just the part in red):

I'm a <a href="http://www.cnn.com/">link</a (http://www.cnn.com/%22%3Elink%3C/a)>!

So in your navbar you'll have something like this:

<ul>
<li><a href="http://yoursite.smugmug.com/whatever.html">Link 1</a></li>
<li><a href="http://yoursite.smugmug.com/whatever2.html">Link 2</a></li>
<li><a href="http://yoursite.smugmug.com/whatever3.html">Link 3</a></li>
</ul>

That'll make it so your navbar links to places. For more information about how to create links go to http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_a.asp and go play around with your new found knowledge here (http://www.w3schools.com/html/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_links).

Hope that helps.

Hope you don't mind the pm, but I'm having trouble figuring something out, and you seem like the guy to hassle

I had a post up, asking how to have friends upload pics. You responded with both the guest password and email options, but neither are a workable solution so far..

My problem being, I'd like to allow certain people to upload, but only to one gallery, no the others. My problem with a guest password is that it would allow them to alter my other galleries which I'd like to avoid.. (and some people have had file size problems with their email providers, which seems to rule out the email option..)

I think I 'might' be out of luck, but if you have any other suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

This is a question that any one of a dozen folks could have answered.
I'm sorry but I don't have another solution for you, I wish I did.

Andy,
I was lurking trying to get a fix for my footer... came across the html
page for that keeps the image from displaying... Anyway got side
tracked by your "Guarantee Page". I would humbly request to copy your page
verbiage (not photo) to use for my site? The only issue I have had with
SmugMug prints thus far was a print that got squashed in the mail. I
replaced it my self... did not realize what the "Guarantee was" so I
would like to add it to my Nav Bar so my customers can see it how to
handle issues as well. Nothing needed from you, except for the okay to copy
please.

Thanks!

A) Don't LURK- Lurking is BAD, we want to get to know you :D
B) We don't bite - see above :thumb

C) You may copy completely, it's the SmugMug Guarantee Page, just copied onto my own site for my own look and feel, here's the way to do it:

<html>

<!-- Start Body -->

<div align="center">

<br><br>

<img src="/img/prints/guarantee.gif" alt="Our guarantee" width="234" height="29" hspace="0" vspace="0" border="0" />
<br><br>
<TABLE border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="10">
<tr>
<td width="254" valign="top">
If you are unhappy with your prints or gifts, smugmug will reprint or refund your order, whichever you prefer.<br><br>
Simply send email to <a href="mailto:help@smugmug.com">help@smugmug.com</a> within 30 days of receiving your order.<br><br>

<strong class="blue">Note:</strong> smugmug uses a professional lab renowned for their color accuracy and consistency, but they do not attempt to make adjustments to your photos.<br><br>
The significance is you may not like their results if a camera setting was off, but you'll probably think their results are <a href="/prints/digital-prints.mg">better than any consumer lab</a> for well-exposed photos with good color balance.<br><br>
Replacement prints from them almost always look identical to the first set you receive, but smugmug can often help adjust your originals to provide better results.

</td>
<td width="252" valign="top">
<img src="/img/prints/AnneBridal.jpg" alt="Anne bridal" width="250" height="331" hspace="0" vspace="0" border="0" class="smborder" />

</td>
</tr>
</TABLE>

<br><br>

</div>
<!-- End Body --> <div class="spacer"></div>
</div>
<!-- End Content -->

</html>

Make a new gallery, and force the view style to all thumbs.
Put the above in your Gallery Description.

Add this to your CSS:

.gallery_XXXXXX .nophotos {display: none;}

Boom - done :thumb
I hope this helps!

Dear Andy,
I've been using your JavaScript to replace text in a long
innerHTML
page.
But how do you tell the process to stop, please?

Say I have ten pipes but do not know I have 10 so
I want to test some varialbel to see if it is no longer TRUE
But what can I test, please?

<script type="text/javascript">
// Remove trailing pipe (|) from "other sizes"
var objElement = document.getElementById("exifOtherSizes")
if (objElement != null) {
var str = new String(objElement.innerHTML);
str = str.replace('|', '')
objElement.innerHTML = str;
}
</script>

Best wishes and thank you for your tips

Ok you bloggers, help :ear

Hmmm, an interesting question. I wouldn't say that it'd be easy to make your SM site more bloggy. It may be easier to make your blog more smugmuggy... If you've got your own space on the web, I personally recommend WordPress. Others will tell you I'm smoking crack and that TypePad or one of the various others is way better. It really makes no difference honestly, you'll just need a blogging client. If you don't want to pay for your own host and bother with installing the blogging client and so on, you can go with a free service like blogger or any one of 10,000,000 other ones (just google search for free blogging or something like that).

Then once you have your blog set up, you can go to www.feedburner.com with your RSS or ATOM feed and make it so any one of your various Smugmug feeds are automatically displayed on your blog. Right off the top of my head I can't think of a better way than that. Anyone else? :ear

Dear (Andy),

I am pleased with my professional membership. I configured my cname and
I have done a fair amount of reading on custom configurations.

I am very familiar with css and html. I have found the screenshot with
the varying id and classes for galleries. However, I am unclear how to
proceed. I swear I know the code, but I am at a loss for how I can
translate my HTML and css knowledge to something like
http://qapete.smugmug.com/gallery/7041 or like
http://bigwebguy.smugmug.com/ and of course
http://bigwebguy.smugmug.com/Madeline.

My inclination would be to build an awesome page then just drop the
various php, css, or javascript elements into the proper container or
coding. But I need the magic bullet to convert my real world acumen to smug
mug coolness.

A lot of blah blah for a weekend. But thank you for your awesome
reply, in advance.

Hi Andy,
I'm new to SM but an experienced web developer and photographer...I see
on your site, above the thumbnails, you have shown "keyword pages:"
before the individual page links, 1 2 3 4 5 6 > >> ...also....how
do you get the word "buy:" just before the "photo" link and cart
icon....does it only appear with certain CP settings or more so something
needs done in the theme customizing area. It seems pretty straight
forward, but I can't figure out why I don't have what you do on yours.
Here's an axample gallery of mine to see what I mean,
http://propointmedia.smugmug.com/gallery/1573043.

Thank You....I really like what you've done on your site.

Dave C.

Hi Dave :wave

"keyword pages" shows up when you are in a keyword view - I did no customization to make that happen.

The word "buy" is there on your site, too, it's just that your background matches the color. If you use FF and the FF Web Dev Tool (both free and both linked in my sig) you can blow away your css temporarily with the tool and see those elements.

put this in your css and you'll see what I mean:

.cartbuttons .title {color: red;}

#albumNav_top .title {color: red;}

Looking forward to your participation on the forums here!

I figured it was a color problem as to why the text wasn't appearing, but when I'd drag the mouse over the area where the text should be it still wasn't highlighting. The CSS code I inserted,

.cartbuttons .title {color: red;}
#albumNav_top .title {color: red;}

into my theme CSS never made the "buy this" appear....do I need to put it in a specific place? CSS is not my area of expertise. Thanks in advance.

I figured it was a color problem as to why the text wasn't appearing, but when I'd drag the mouse over the area where the text should be it still wasn't highlighting. The CSS code I inserted,

.cartbuttons .title {color: red;}
#albumNav_top .title {color: red;}

into my theme CSS never made the "buy this" appear....do I need to put it in a specific place? CSS is not my area of expertise. Thanks in advance.
Sure we can help - your smugmug site again pls - nickname.smugmug.com ? Thanks.

You do yourself a disservice, too - I'm not the only one that can answer - and I have been known to be incorrect ...once or twice :lol3

So, please - no private message questions for customization help.

Thank you for 100% cooperation and understanding.

Hi Andy,
My name is Dan. I have a pretty simple question...how can I create a customized homepage on smugmug (i.e. no galleries), similiar to yours? I don't necessarily want to put any flash up, but I do want control over the structure of page.

To establish some context....
My good friend is a photographer and asked his 'techie' friend (me) to help him create his web presence. I'm a j2ee guy by trade and an open source enthusiast. I can tell by your site, profile, etc. that you and smugmug GET the open source / innovation comunity thing. I'd really appreciate any help/advice you may have!

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

my page has no flash on it, it's 100% SmugMug, and our customization that we do here on Dgrin :D

First, read thru the sticky threads in the customization forum. Then, post your questions in a new thread, I and the many helpers here will get you going in NO time!

I HIGHLY recommend Firefox and the Webdev tool, both free and both linked in my signature.

Once you have gone thru the basic threads, then start a new post, list our your questions - don't forget to give us the sitename, http://nickname.smugmug.com and we'll help you fast!

HI Andy,
I am new to this forum and I am trying to update my smugmug account and customize it. I have read through some of the tutorials and I am totally lost.

I want to make a elegant but simple website. It would basially have my bio, pricing and galleries. I don't want it to look too busy though. Do you think you can help me?

As of now I have photos online, but I have not sold any off of the smugmug site. My site for now is basically to view. But I am going to go into business soon and I am trying to get the site to look more professional.

Thanks,

I was referred here by SmugMug for my inquiries on customizing my site. Now i realize this not smigmug anymore or is it? I am totally lost now.

These are my questions I sent "smugmug help section" :

Why is it that in my Travel Galleries, under the title "Colors of San
Francisco", the font of the description text is different than the
others in that same travel gallery page? Could you pleas check it out?
You've put this in the other galleries, in the description area:
<FONT size L-1>This is the prison island owned by France. It was popularized in 1970 by the best-selling book of an ex-Devil's Island convict named Henri Charrière published under the title PAPILLON. On the Hollywood film the leading roles were played by Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.</FONT>
That's why the others are different :D

I also need help on how I can make the fonts of my clickable name
"andresalvador" which means "home page" taller or bigger and with a
different color. The same thing with the "Category Name" that comes after "andresalvador".
put this in your CSS (control panel>css> )
#breadcrumb, #breadcrumb .nav {font-size: 20px;}

and adjust the size accordingly.
Now that I have sent this to you, do I get answers through my email address or I have to look for it here at DGrin? I am new to all these. All I know is to naviate my computer and a little HTML.

Dgrin is our support forum - owned and part of SmugMug :D

Andy, thanks for your re-post of 11-10-2005. I am able to follow your instructions.

My question is how do I put a different header for different ShareGroups?

You said that "if you want to have a specific header for a category pages, add this to your CSS stylesheet:
.category #my_header {
display: block;
margin-left:auto;
margin-right:auto;
background: url(http://yournickname.smugmug.com/photos/XXXXXXXX-L.gif);
height: XXpx;
width: XXpx;
}
I also want to have a different header for different categories. How do I identify these named categories? Example, I have categories named cat1, cat2, cat3.

Thanks in advance for your invaluable help.

my wife is helping me create mine and i wish to include a slideshow on the main page similar to yours. my questions are: does the help tutorial help with this? i'm also hoping to sell my images. do you upload the full original size for optimum printing?

thanks for any help you can share. just trying to get a good look going :)

thank you,

Hi Andy,

How are you? I hope you can help me. Look here
http://paulsmit.smugmug.com and you'll see black link underlinings in
the header (my customized navigation). Now look here
http://www.paulsmit.biz/features.html and you see underlinings in the
same color as the linktext itself. That's the way I want it to be.

I do not succeed in getting it right in the Smugmug header, although
the code I use is the same as for the other header mentioned above.

How can I get this right? Or do you have an easy tweek you can add
instantly to my header? Thanks for your reply, best regards,

ugh, font tags. I'll skip the lecture, but font tags are deprecated (http://www.communitymx.com/blog/index.cfm?newsid=244).

Anyhow put this in your CSS to change your underlines to red. You can change them to be whatever color you want.

Andy I got everything else to work. For my galleries and about me what would be the best way for me to add those links. I don't have one for about me, what would be the best way to make a link for about me, but galleries I can't fiqure out the link.

It's easy. Make a new gallery - "About Me" and force the style to Journal. Then write your Bio in the photo caption area. Then, use this gallery link, in lieu of # in your navbar html in the header html area on your customization page.

For "Galleries" make a new custom category, called "Galleries"
Put any gallery you want into this category, then navigate to that category page. http://yourwebsite.com/Galleries and copy that url, and put it in in lieu of # in your navbar html in the header html area on your customization page.

I hope this helps!

Also is their any way I can add a slideshow to my home page?

Slideshow? Sure! Here's the thread with all that info:

Hi Andy :)

I just recently joined SmugMug (botanist.smugmug.com) and i'm looking to customize my site...as extensively as I can I guess so that I can get a more one of a kind user experience. However I think i'm getting in my own way ;) See the problem is i'm a web developer already...I own my own server and have 110% creative and programming control over everything. So now I join smugmug (you offered features I couldn't dream of building on my own, not in a short timespan at least, so thanks for that) with the hopes of creating a unique site.

Well...3200 lines of CSS and code later and i'm drowning. So I wrote down a few questions. If you'd rather I make a thread in the forums that's ok too.
:wave welcome to SmugMug, and thank you for joining! Yes, please ask your questions here in the customization forums.

The problem is I don't need the typical n00b answers. My real problem surrounds the fact that I'm a ground up programmer faced with a pre-existing interface and no "technical" documentation (that i've found at least) to accompany it.
The folks that will be answing you are not n00bs. It would be me, Mike Lane, bigwebguy, Ivar, Barb, Devbobo - and countless others who give freely of their time, and have "been there, and done that, on SmugMug." We promise that you'll get the help you need.

Documentation? It may be misnamed, for you, but Customizing for Dummies is OUTSTANDING: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=25441

As for anything else - see the stickys, and ask any questions you like, we are here to help you :)

Anywho, if you can help via PM that'd be great, if not email (********* removed for privacy) or just say "post in the forums n00b!" ;) I run a series of vB sites myself and know how freaking annoying being the SA can be!

Yeah we do it all in the forums here, you can imagine, with 200,000+ customers, we'd be inundated by private messages, and we wouldn't have the benefit of, "as we help you, others with the same questions or issues are being helped!" :D

Is there a "Basic" theme to start with so that we can customize the look and not have to re-write 3200 lines of CSS? If not is there one theme easier than the rest to cusomize? A blank or no theme would be prefferable if at all possible.
Any of them, whichever suit your fancy, can be customized :D http://themes.smugmug.com or use the themes button on your site to see the different looks and feels :)

Is there an advanced user's guide listing things that can, and cannot, be done with examples of each? Can I write CSS to make certain elements "display: none;"? If not can I script (javascript) to
dynamically make elements "style.display = 'none';"? What exactly is the extent to which the site is customizable, and at what length do we need to go to get there?
Yes there, is. See Customizing for Dummies, listed above. And don't forget to get FF and the FF Webdev tool, both FREE and both linked in my signature. And you'll want the AIS tool for IE6, that's here:
http://www.nils.org.au/ais/web/resources/toolbar/documentation_v2en.html

I would love to fully customize it to look exactly as I would like it but I understand that there is some smugmug "branding" that will need to remain.

Thank you and have a wonderful day

Thank you, for writing! I hope we can help you get the site you want :D

Hi Andy. Hope you don't mind me emailing, but I'm a little confused with a lot of the script on my customising page, and was hopeing that maybe you would be able to help.

I've added some script in the 'head tag' section, from what I read from Mike Lane, but I'm not seeing the desired effects.
Very little should go in the "head tag," area - what exactly have you added? A link to your site is crucial for us to help you :D

I've got it so that I can click on the image to return to the home page, which is all good, but I've still got the purple line around it, and no matter what I type, I just can't seem to get rid of it.
OK, link us to the page in question and we can help.

Also, I would like to change the font on the link 'CLICK TO CONTACT', so that it stands out a little more and is different than that in my bio. I know that I can change the size, but when I do, it also changes the size on the bio as well. A little confusing, but I can't seem to work it out.
We can fix this easily when we have your site.

One more thing, if I could ask as well please. I would like to get rid of the search bar at the top of the page, but reading on Digital Grin, I can not find anyway of doing this, but I'm sure it's in there somewhere.
If you put in a custom header, you'll not have a search bar. So, let's see your site and we can help here :D

Any help would be really, really appreciated. As I have said, I'm a real novice on this, so if you could include something that I could copy and paste, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.We can ALL help you. Make a post in the customization forum (this forum) and put in your questions, with details, and most importantly, LINKS :D

:wave looking forward to helping you out - we all are.

Hello Andy, First let m say your site has been more than hepful in customizing my new smugmug gallery, but Ive run into a few bumps.

First is there a way to force my galleries into a certain style WITHOUT giving the users the option to change it. Basically I want all my galleries to be one style and only that style.
Sure - go to gallery customization: Gallery Tools>Customize Gallery, and force the viewing style there.

Secondly, I use the "smugmug" style on all my galleries, is there a way to force the image size when a user clicks on the thumbnail?
No, the main image will always be the same. If you click on the main image, you'll get lightbox. If you click on the single image links below the main image, you can get the larger images on single image style.

Finally, all of the details below my image i.e. what camera I use and soforth, is there a way to hide all of that information?

Yes, there is, via gallery customization, gallery tools>customize gallery>camera details - No. And you can further hide things, via CSS. Just make a post in the customization forum, and give the link to your site, and what you want to do, and I or the MANY helpers here will get you sorted in no time :D

This is the message:

Andy, I added navigation buttons to my page and I use the Old Family Album theme for the page and now I want to make the color of my navigation buttons match those of the boxes on old family album. Can you tell me where I can find that color code? I am very new to this and have to tell you that the guidance you have provided folks is great and so useful
[/qutoe]

Reading the CSS (by simply viewing source) I see this:

/*== Buttons ==*/

.buttons,
.smbuttons {
color: #000;
background-color: #776655;
border: 1px double #000;
font-family: American Typewriter, Georgia;
}

.buttons:hover,
.smbuttons:hover {
color: #000;
background-color: #958c82;
border-color: #000;
}

I hope this helps. OH BTW, if you have photoshop, you can simply use the eyedropper to sample any color on any web page, just drag the eyedropper from an open in image in photoshop to the place on a webpage you want to sample. Cool Trick!

Hello Andy.

I finally took my flying leap into my free two week trial for my pro site at smug mug. I also finally registered with Digital Grin so I can get some help on the customization of my site. I was browsing around and saw your info for headers and such and I'm quite confused. I saw your site in the examples and the simple minimalist feel to your home page is exactly what I want for mine too. Of course, I want my own colors and my own font, etc BUT, I didn't see anything that might direct me on how to accomplish what seems like a confusing feat. I don't do "junky" or "busy" too well and prefer simple and clean so any advice you might be able to offer or any links to get me where I need to be so I might reach my 1st goal would be sooooo appreciated!!! Also...how come my domain isn't just www.herrmannphotography.com instead of \\herrmannphotography.smugmug.com? I want that basic too...;-P.

I'm so excited about having this site....it's only a matter of time before I'll eventually figure it all out....Thanks in advance for your help!!! :-D

Thanks!

Hi Andy,

First of all, I love the feel of your website, and of your photos. I have been looking at them for a few months on an off. You capture that peace, calm, and contemporary feel that I am drawn to.

I am working on a Masters program in Spiritual Psychology, and one of our projects is to follow through on a passionate desire. My passion is to share my photography with a wider group of people than I have in the past, to create a "real" business, and with the success of that business buy more camera goodies, and to give my gift of photographs to those that can not afford it. (In particular taking photos of young kids in Mexico and giving these photos away to their parents). Anyway, with this goal in mind, my passion is not designing a web site.... that is just a necessary step along the way.

So, is there a way to just get a template similar to your Moon River Photography, and avoid the time to learn Smugmug web design? My project needs to be completed by June 2007, and with time constraints with having 2 young kids, work and school, I am just hoping there is a short cut here that I can take.

Thank you for sharing your gift with me, I truly enjoy my time looking at your photos. And thank you as well, for taking the time to read this, and your advise on this subject.

All my best,

Thank YOU for the VERY kind words :D you made my day. Now, just register on Dgrin here, and make a post in the customization forum, you'll get TONS of help and get this done fast. There's not a template, but our crew here will get you going!

Hi Andy,

I am searching around the sites trying to figure out how to do a custom home page. I am looking to have it so there is one pic and a banner on the main page and some buttons at the top. I would like something similar to your site. My site is glennkasin.smugmug.com.

Could you point me in the right direction?

Hi Andy,

Thought this message would be more fitting to send privately.

I was on your site this morning. Love your photos and how you organized it.

I was wondering if you be so kind as to send me your background image(just the textured greyish image). I would like to use on my site as I think it would provide a better contrast. Do you provide items off your site or maybe you do not like to do that?

Let me know and thanks for all your help so far. My site is coming together slowly but surely. I do have to say I am getting addicted to this site as it I look at it all the time.

:DHi, It's mine, I made it for my site. But you can make your own. It's a 6pixels wide by 3pixels high with a light diagonal through it. Make a post in Finishing School if you need help with making on :thumb

Andy,

Hello and I hope your having a great holiday! I have spoke with you before about website layouts through smugmug and with the forums it helps considerably but what I was wondering because you have a great style associated with your site is if you would sell a template of your site? minus a few changes to color and font and basic look and feel but the simple layout is awesome. You have had other pages I liked as well and didn't know if you had templates of those either!

Or what would it take to get something of that caliber? I don't have an endless wallet but a lot of time to put forth towards the bettering of my site.

I just need a lot more knowledge in the matter.

I think simple is better and would like to emmulate your page!

Thanks for your time,

Hi, my site redesign was a big effort I did over the past week. It's not for sale, sorry. But no worries - YOU can create your own look and feel. You just have to ask the right questions. Make a post in the customization forum, and I, our Support Heroes, and the whole community can help you get to where you want to be.

I followed all the steps last night and started to make my SmugMug site look pretty! I have two questions I made all my background pages and boxes BLACK and now when I am on a category page the titles of each seperate Gallery no longer show up, I would like them to be white. Also on each category page my gallery thumbnail links run vertical on the page I would prefer that they run horizontal. Any advice how to rearrange the pages where the galleries are listed? The tutorials are great, I have never done anything like this before and I could figure it out and understand it for the most part. Thank-you!!!

Quick Question

I know my theme on my site is now dark arts. But i'm trying to customize it. Which at first takes alot of deleting, and I am unsure of how to delete code that all comes packaged with the Dark Arts. Because the look I am going for is, the Banner I have no with just a basic white background with some type of slide show and a simply navbar as "modern" styled buttons. So you do see why I am trying to delete this such as the bio box, and bio pictures and all the borders, because I am going to included this information deeper in my website for now though I just want to set up a homepage with a links to a pages ( ie. one button for.... bio.. gallery.. pricing... contact info stuff of that sort.

Just wondering if this is possible and some tips .
The deleting of the code is what I am focussed on now I know all that other stuff is a ways out.

I'm sorry - no private messages.

You don't delete code from the theme, you use your customization which overrides the theme stuff. Bio box, can be hidden in control panel.

For a bio, or about me gallery, use our faq: http://www.smugmug.com/help/customize-faq.mg #29...

Post any more questions in the customization forum, in a new thread. Don't be shy, let us help you :D

Hey Andy, I'm trying to figure out how to do a redirect to a galleries page from the home page.

Home - dboras.smugmug.com
Page I need the redirect to go to - http://dboras.smugmug.com/gallery/2348744

What would be the easiest way to do this? I don't want the home page to show up at all really. When a viewer types in http://dboras.smugmug.com it needs to go straight to the gallery page that I've posted above.

Have you used our FAQ:

Do you think you could walk me through it?

Thanks...

Hi, please make a post in the forum, so that we can help you :)

Be sure and list your SmugMug site. Thanks!

You do yourself a disservice, too - I'm not the only one that can answer - and I have been known to be incorrect ...once or twice :lol3

So, please - no private message questions for customization help.

Thank you for 100% cooperation and understanding.

Hey Andy,

If you've got a minute we'd appreciate your help... we're trying to add slide show buttons to our website (which is in it's very early stages). We found 2 links to help add slide show buttons on Digital Grin but we're lost on how to implement it to our website.

Buttons are located in post one here:
http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=28348

Please post your questions for the Slideshow in the slideshow thread.

Thanks!

Hi,
I am very new to your site/forum ... just discovered it a few days ago
while searching for a java script allowing slideshow navigation.
I guess it was meant to be ... I have been reading it "round the clock"
ever since.

My question is not necessarily photography related.

Can the script be easily adapted to work within another website or
does it need to work within your site's framework?

The navigation buttons are VERY stylish. The BEST I found.

Since I am not a pro or even advanced amateur I hesitate to ask questions
at this point. I've been using Canon S40 since late 2002 and
would love to take my skills to a next level. Last couple of years I've been posting
my pictures on a team website (I've coached charity marathon runners) to provide
a "photo journal" and motivation.
(http://www.runwithjan.com/slideshow3.html
http://www.runwithjan.com/photos.html
http://www.runwithjan.com/memoryLane.html).

Having seen photos on your and other sites makes me VERY humble
and anxious to learn at the same time.

I am planning on getting my first DSLR (XT or XTi, still debating) at BH
with a couple lenses Ziggy recommended in one of the threads
(EF 50mm, f1.8, Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro).

I hope both work well with XT/XTi and will definitely take much better "action" photos than S40.

Do not really expect a response, you must be getting hundreds of enquiries like this one.

THANK YOU for all I've already learned at your site/forum.

My Best, Jan.

Thanks for the kind words :D

\Andy,
I was following the scripting for removing the "fullscreen" button on a slideshow gallery I've made on my smugmug webpages. I added the text from the FAQ to my CSS, but nothing has happened, and the button is still showing. Until now, everything I've done based on FAQ's has worked...but this is frustrating me greatly! Can you help?
The gallery is: http://www.memoryhill.com/gallery/2644796. If you can help, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Thanks.

Add this to your CSS:

.buttons[value=fullscreen] {display: none;}

Please ask all q's in the open forum, thank you!

Emailing this to you instead of posting to the forum.

Hi Andy,
I'm new to SmugMug. Love the customization and hacks. I should have the basic mods done soon.

How about adding the update button at the top or bottom of each customization section. I have to keep scrolling down to the very bottom each time I need to update the customize page. That's got to be an easy thing to do and it would really help the UI on that page.

Thanks!

Is there a formal way to submit an enhancement request to the way SmugMug works?

It would be nice if the NavBar could be selectable left to right as well, rather than having to copy and paste a non-supported string of HTML code other folks are sharing. Putting the thing on the left is a good feature. One of the first things my wife said when looking at pics I posted was "that thing popping up over the picture bugs me." Folk naturally drag the mouse pointer over what they are looking at. When the NavBar pops up as a result, you have to move the pointer off and wait for it to go away. Not the most natural feel.

Hi, yes, there is a FR thread, here:
http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=57396

we love to get feature requests :) It's how we improve the site.

As to your navbar question, that's best asked in the customizing forum, here. Please start a new thread, and then let the experts help you... it's all do-able what you are asking.

I think the navbar she's referring to is the popout photobar. It can be
positioned on the left or bottom with some javascript but requires a power
or pro level account. With a standard account 'bout all you can do is turn
it off under customize gallery.

Al,

You are right. I was talking about the popout photobar. If there is a way to do it with (I have seen examples of it working on others' smugmug accounts) a power level account, I will upgrade from standard to power level. I struggled with the decision when I signed up, but was not sure I would use the features added.

I now think I will have application for the power level account.

Rick
He, not she...

P.S.: I tried it when I was signed up as a power user under the trial period and was not successful following the instructions of a post here. I will research more and find out if I can copy and paste someones code who has already had success moving the photobar to the left, which is my ultimate goal. I think it is much less distracting over the thumbnails than the main image.

To move the photobar to the bottom requires this simple addition
to the javascript. See it in action here (http://atsmith.smugmug.com/gallery/1625758#78866762).

SM.PhotoBar.config.position = 'bottom';

Hello!
I am not looking to re create the wheel that was created by smugmugs fine team of web designers. I would just love to be able to use your very agreeable format ! Is it possible for me to obtain the code for the 6 125px X 125px photo/links at the top of Digital Grin's site ? It is my hope to only have to change the location of the photos and change the digital grin name to my companies name. Is this allowable ? and is there a step by step that I can follow ?
Thanks Andy! Keep up the GREAT WORK !

Thank you :)

Dear Andy,
I have been trying to get my web on smugmug set up for the past 4 or 5 hours today and keep ending up at the same point. nothing i do seems to work. anyway, i looked around your site and then the different forum strings and couldn't really figure out how to get things right. i was wondering if you could help me with the following.

1.) I seem to have been able to set up a different page for gallery and clients but i can seem to change some things on them. for example title in each page that says "gallery categories", i would like to turn that off and cant seem to do it. Also i would like to figure out how to make the gallery page on the homepage unviewable when i'm not logged in, but viewable when i am.

2) also, when i'm viewing my galleries on my page (where you can view each picture and buy them), it takes me to a smugmug page. and on yours i see it still says moonriver photography. i was wondering how you got it to do that. thanks

We want to help! :) Please post your questions in the customizing forum, so that we can all pitch in. Don't forget to give a link to your website :thumb

You do yourself a disservice, too - I'm not the only one that can answer - and I have been known to be incorrect ...once or twice :lol3

So, please - no private message questions for customization help.

Thank you for 100% cooperation and understanding.

Andy Im looking to do make a search page similar to your find page. The only thing I would like to switch is the order of the search features to be search, timeline, map, then keywords.

I have started a thread here http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=70952

Could you please help me out.

Yup you bet - but please read above....

Hi Andy,

I was wondering how on your site you get the hover to display below the picture? Assuming it's just some simple CSS, but couldn't find the answer via search.

Thanks,

The answer you seek, is in this sticky thread, in the customizing forum:

Just like yours
Andy, is there an easy, effective first step that I can take in customization to get my website home page tp look like yours?

Easy? You can't wave a wand or anything, but sure, you can do it, anyone can. I am not a programmer or coder. I learned it ALL here on Dgrin. Start in the Start Here Sticky, become familiar with how things work, and start a thread with your questions. The whole community will help.

I really like the "find" page you have on your site. It seems like those items are only available on a homepage. I'm not quite sure how you get access to that stuff on a static page.

Do you have any pointers (I imagine there are links in the forums to these methods) that could get me started on something similar?

I'm all about using the search function in the forums, but I'm not really sure where to start on something like this. I don't want you to think I'm lazy or anything...

Thanks.

PS: Your site is a fine example of what you can accomplish with SM.

Thanks for the kind words :) Now, make a post in the form so that we can help you :thumb

I have set up my smugmug account (pro)
I have done a great job with everyones info on the forum but I am stuck with some small stuff.

In my guest page the smug logo comes up and not my banner.
Also I cannot get rid of the slideshow option in my galleries except the first one I created.

Also I want the pop up on the photos to open at the bottom. I got the first one to take but cannot get the rest.

I am not sure what thread I am suppose to post in, or if I have to post in different ones?

While I am at it. I like the way when you open galleries up the way they line up and the title of the galleries under the picture and not on the side.

Basiclly I have lloked at your site for several months until I decided to do this. I like yours the best and layout.

Thanks

Thanks so much for the kind words! Post a new thread in the forum, and we'll help you :)

Hi Andy,
I am trying to do several things cutomize my site. I have asked on dgrin and also looked through some of the help guides.
I am not technical at all and am struggling with trying to figure out html from scratch and how to get anything done. I was able to change my site to black and then some of my text to black but not all. The nav bar, Home, Galleries etc..wouldnt change to white. After messing with this and still not being able to make it look right, I put it all back. Then my galleries, disappeared for a while. Someone with support found somewhere that needed to be changed, something I had not changed myself. I am leary to make any changes for fear of my site being screwed up to viewers and then me not being able to get it back.

I need to do these things or I will have to buy another template somewhere else and get it looking right, I would rather not do that. Is there a detailed guide, step by step for dummies that I can use to get what I need, and I mean code, where to put it, everything?

1) change my logo on all pages, maybe reposition things
2) all black site
3) all text white
4)spash page for options to enter site or enter blog
5) client proofing nav, type in password box then directed to proofing site. I don't like how the galleries are set up for private galleries. I want a link directly from my menu
6) I need to have my galleries, sublist for each subject then go there

suggestions on how to get these things done and ASAP?

Please post all of thse questions in the Customizing Forum :thumb

how do i remove the "share photo" button from an album that already has the "nophoto" option used? for example, this one:

thanks,

Hello! OK so go to the Category view, then click "customize" under the gallery thumbnail. Then you can set easy sharing to "no" for that gallery.

Hello Andy,
I'm pretty new here, and have found tons of useful info to start getting my site set up. However, one of the things I want to do, is to create a pricing page simular to your page here:
http://www.moonriverphotography.com/gallery/830860
But I can't figure out how to do it. I tried creating an "About Me" page, but can't figure out how to keep it from looking like a Gallery (ie showing the "Buy this Photo" text, etc. Here's what it looks like now:
http://rockin-photos.com/gallery/4195667
Also, in the very top (blue) bar of my browser, the title reads "Rockin' Photos - Photography by Jerry Bishop- powered by SmugMug" but I don't really want the powered by SmugMug line on there.

I've got more questions, but I'll give you a chance to answer these first.

Hi, please post this in the customizing forum - where all the customizing help is given, thanks! :thumb

It's really easy. my pricing page for portraits is a forced-journal style gallery. Turn printing off. No cart icons. :thumb

Hi Andy,

I figured rather than starting new thread and letting it die after you fix the problem, pm'ing you would be better..

I seem to have messed up the code in my bio box, now when i log in and click edit, the little editable box doesn't show up anymore.

would you be able to reset or remove the problem that i created.

I added a <div> tag to the top of the slideshow script and it stopped working

Hi, you can go to control panel, settings tab, and edit your bio from there, whenever this happens :)

Holler if this doesn't work....

Andy,

Is there a thread about creating galleries like you and Mike Lane have?

Specifically all square thumbs on the page with the larger image (looks like a change to standard smugmug style). Boarders around thumds, and main image resizes as window expands and contracts.

If there are threads you know for these can you point me in the right place? if not let me know and I will post the questions in the forum for answers for everyone.

thanks

I have been trying for days to get my homepage right and have been working through it with Allen who has been a fantastic help, but I am still stuck at the moment and was wondering if you would be able to help me.

I really liked the way that you have set up your homepage with the simple logo, nav bar and slideshow, and that was the style that I was looking to create as well. Just a nice attractive front page devoid of clutter.

Anyway, despite much tinkering, I still have issues which I haven't been able to solve, but which appears to work beautifully with your homepage:

1. For some reason, I initially was able to move my logo into the right position using top and left values, but then they disappeared from my code in the banner section. After I put them back in again, no matter what values I enter, the logo still doesn't move at all.

2. In Firefox, the photos fit perfectly within the frame that I have set up, however, in Safari and IE, the picture is not within the frame and the location of the nav bar is moved in relation to the frame so that it is not flush with the right border anymore. I have looked at your homepage and it works perfectly in all 3 browsers so I thought you might be the best person to ask:)

3. My next step is to have the same logo and nav buttons but higher up on the page on all subsequent pages after the homepage so that visitors don't need to scroll down to see the images fully. I'm not sure exactly how I would go about doing this...would I copy and paste the code for the logo and nav buttons again and paste them in a section under galleries (and then re-tinker with their formatting values) so that they override the top most homepage formatting?

Thanks so much for your help Andy.
Much appreciated.

Hello Andy,

I saw you post on a thread that somebody named JerryR does CSS websites for free. I am trying to get a more professional site up, but don't really have too much experience with CSS and flash.

The thread I saw your post on is as follows:

Thanks!

You do yourself a disservice, too - I'm not the only one that can answer - and I have been known to be incorrect ...once or twice :lol3

So, please - no private message questions for customization help.

Thank you for 100% cooperation and understanding.

Hello,
I am thinking of going with the google checkout as I have allot of products to offer but can't customize smugmugs cart. My question is what happens to the smugmug cart does it stay and just process the prints? Also is the google checkout authorized by smugmug in any way. Thanks,

You can turn SmugMug's cart off by selecting 'printing=no' in your gallery settings :thumb

I read your thread about having pictures in a journal gallery set so people can not click on them. I applied your code and it works great for one gallery, but i want to apply it to other galleries....

How do I do that????

Thanks

I don't have the patience to locate my request in the forum, so please bear with me....

I would like to have a single photo (like your website)for my "home page" instead of what comes standard....it's too cluttered.

Can you point me in the correct direction to get this done? I appreciate it. I'm still trying to decide if I should be dropping my webpage geek and doing this on my own with SmugMug...So far...undecided!!

Thanks!!

Hi Andy, I have been trying to design my website and I am having trouble with the slideshow on my home page. The images in this slide show have a poor quality, like a squiggly line on the edges. Also the "smugmug" that appears in the center of the slideshow...can I get rid of this? like to moon gallery one? I dont want my slideshow images to be a clickable link to the smugmug home page....help!

Any help much appreciated! Not too familiar with html.
Hi, slideshow questions, post 'em here please. And in post #1 of the slideshow thread is a link to the wiki page where the params are to not have the slides clickable, and not show the logo....

I am starting to focus some of my marketing materials on Commercial photography which is one of my categories on my site. So my url for those ads will be jerrycahalan.com/commercial so that prospects don't land on my home page with wedding and portrait stuff. my question is: can I have more of a home page feel on that page? I dont want them just landing amongst a bunch of folders. I need an introduction of my commercial photography abilities and intro to my site if that is where they will land. I tried fitting a lengthy one into the description field of the first folder and it is eclipsed by other folders. What's my best bet? I would hate to have to construct a whole new site just to have an intro to my commercial section. Thanks so much.

smug has not been able to help. They keep giving me a hack that adds a line of detail above the folders but that's not what I'm looking for. Do you think I need to open another site to do it right? I cant look like a wedding and a commercial guy. I'd rather pay for a new site I think. Thanks so much fo any help you can give me. talk soon.

Hi Jerry,

"Smug" is me :) I'm the General Manager.... just making sure you know that...

You can use the 2nd homepage hack, why not... make it /commercial instead of /galleries. Works a treat. Make a Special DIV that would hold your intro, put that in your header.

<div id="myintro">
blah blah text here
</div>

then use this in CSS:

#myintro {display: none;}
.commercial #myintro {display: block;}

when you get that far, you can post again and we'll help you position it.

Hi Andy -

I was wondering if I could ask you a quick question - I would really like to have my banner/navigation bar like you have yours on your website; can you tell me how to do that? How to change the style/location of the navigation bar, and also how to just get text up into that banner area? SmugMug won't let me upload a Jpeg file with text in it, but if I save it as a PNG, it won't let me use it as a banner!

Thanks so much - I love your site. The MoonRiver page was the one that convinced me to join SmugMug! It's lovely...

Thank you for the kind words. Sure you can upload a JPG with Text - we do it all the time :) PNGS can be used as a banner, too. Please post in the forum, and let us help you. Thanks!

Hi Andy,

I'm looking to hire someone who knows how to put together galleries on Smugmug and help me with 2 to 3 galleries I have with you guys. I need help with the navigation bar, the look of the galleries - and don't have time to do it myself (I know I can go through your tutorials<s>). There are 3 or 4 more Pro Galleries I want to set up for clients that I work with - but need someone to help me along.

Anyone, if you could recommend someone easy to work with and knows Smugmug Galleries inside and out - I'd like to hire them for a few hours here and there to help me get going. They can be located anywhere in the world. My main work is videography work and over the years mineral photography. Here's one of the Smugmug Galleries I want to get into shape so we can start selling from it:

Andy,

I'm trying to freshen my site up and wanted to have the look and feel as you have done with your demo site. I know there is a step by step instruction but I don't know if we need to get rid of some of our existing code or not. I want to have to graphic in left corner and have a gold line all the way across were the nav buttons are. I would like to increase the size of the font so it doesn't look so small. I also would like to have the code to stretch it so what ever monitor someone is using it will go to that size. Can you help and let us know how I can achieve this...

Thanks,

I’ve set my bio photo as well as my custom header in my control panel. I then updated and then submitted. However when I go to my site on another computer neither is visible.

Ron

Here's the code:

#my_banner {
width: 750px;
height: 150px;
margin: 0 auto;
background: url(http://memories-matter.smugmug.com/p...5_DMxeJ-X3.jpg) no-repeat;
}

It's because you have your header in a locked gallery with external links off. Turn ext links on so that the world can see the header graphic :)

Gallery tools>customize gallery>ext links - Yes.

hi Andy,

sorry to bother you but justwanted to ask how do you get a smugmg website look like yours? I just spent hours trying to get a grip of the help provided but it all just went wrong!

I'm on the Power user lelel at the moment and tried to do something similiar with the page (i.e. banner with name - simple, then few buttons on the right to get you to the right place, home page with a slideshow as an opening)

Is there any tutorial on-line (guess I'm not the first person asking the question?!) or could you just give me some idea where to start and where can I find the code for the different parts of the www?

Thank you,

1) post in the forum :D

[QUOTE=John Keane]Andy,
I apologize in advance if this is not the appropriate way or place to pose this question.

I love the way your website opens with a slide show and has options to go to galleys. It's very clean. I'd truly like to do that with mine but can't figure out how. How can I get help with that?

Thanks.

Another bit of help required if I may be so rude!

My issue is whatever I am doing it is not a different home page to my gallery page! I believe I followed the tutorial but obviously I missed something!

I want a home page with banner, navbar and slideshow, NO Galleries

then a gallery with banner, navbar, NO Slideshow and My galleries.

Please can you help?!

Andy,

I am just a Rook at this stuff. I like your Banner and Navbar font, style etc. It is just clean. Are these PNG files? Can you share with me the ideal length, font, format etc?

I am going to have to ask a friend to make it for me for my site since I am not PhotoShop literate and so I need to give him the exact requirements for my site.

Thanks,

Hi, yes my logo is a png. My navbar is just HTML.
The font is Helvetica Neue. Size? You can really make 'em any size you like :)

More questions, please ask away in the forum, thanks!

Hi Andy,

I was wondering how to get my blogger title, to be the same as the "no-banner (but slick), custom header". I see that you have it on your site, and other people do too.

I read that thread on how to make your blog look the same as your sm site, but it must be a little outdated or something because nothing is the same, and there isn't anything mentioned about getting it like how you have it.

Hi, please post this in the blogger thread, or start a new thread, thanks!

sorry andy, didn't know about this thread, I'm still new to the site and havent ventured around enough... I just kinda thought you could give me the code you use for yours and then I would edit it to my specs, but whatever I'll ask again in here.

well, anyone know how to answer my question? I want to make my blog look exactly the same as my smug mug, and to do that I'm running into the problem of getting the sleek smug mug banner that goes on the top to work on the blog.

www.winterbergphotography.com (http://www.winterbergphotography.com) and the blog is at www.blog.winterbergphotography.com (http://www.blog.winterbergphotography.com), I know the background isn't the same right now, I'll fix that later, right now I'm trying to get the header or banner or whatever you want to call it, to even show up. thanks in advance.

ndy,

I have been "messing" and also looking through forums but do not have enough experience with CSS to solve my own problem. I was wondering if you would help me?

I have the following goals:
1. Have the banner (name) and links (I'll need 5-6) be laid out and built like on Mike Lane's site. It's important that the banner and nav line-up with the edges of the content (Mike's home banner and nav is different (auto) width from his gallery view page). I don't need a fancy banner, a small gif with web name is fine. Two of the navs will be home and gallery (explained below) and the others can be "journal" pages with custom HTML content; basically info pages (i.e. - contact, about me, etc.). I would also like if my footer would line up like Mike's.
2. Have a search bar like mike (preferrable with mag glass instead of submit button) and also a shopping cart icon.
3. I would like my home page to be ONLY a gallery that just plays like Mike's with no BG around it and no controls.
4. I would like my galleries page to have any items I want from regular smugmug homepage selection (i.e. - keywords, galleries, popular, etc.).

My website is www.toypix.net. I've succeeded with pieces of these but like I said don't know enough CSS to put together completely.

For instance, using your forum/tutorials I was able to make a home page and 2nd home page (galleries) and figure out how to filter with .homepage: none and the like, but couldn't get the bio slideshow to not have a BG or play without any controls...

I thank you in advance for any help you can lend. Direction (or even code) for what to put in CSS, Header, Java, and so would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Andy, I'm new to SmugMug and I need a little help. I posted a thread about another problem, but got no replies. I can wait on that, but my current problems needs addressed first and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong in posting in the forum.

I tried to do this:
So, if you are using this cool flash slideshow in your bio, you will want to also add some text (that will be hidden) so that your searches on SmugMug do not look like this.
It will also keep a Google search from picking up only the slideshow code in the bio and will, instead,
show your text first.

I inserted the code in my bio box, it didn't work, I decided it wasn't that important, went back to just delete the code and now when I click on the edit box, the slideshow goes away and the box with all the text and code doesn't show up.

Here's my site address: http://millercreekparadise.smugmug.com/

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated
Hi, I fixed your bio issue. You had an unclosed div, and just didn'tfollow our instructions exactly, no problemo :)

Hey Andy,

I've been checking out the message boards a lot, and you do a great job of moderating them and supplying excellent tips and advice.

Quick question: how do I add the very thin double border that you have on MoonRiverPhotography?

check out a2-sf.com

Thanks much,

It's art, I made it in Photoshop. It's not a double border, it's a one pixel line.
Post in Finishing School forum here on Dgrin for how to make one, in Photoshop... then post in Customizing Forum for how to place it on your page.

Thanks.

I am either trying to put my slideshow in my bio with text beside it in the body of my homepage or add a slideshow in my header next to my logo. neither are working and I don't know what to do any suggestions?

Hi, please post in the customizing forum, okay? Tutorials:

Hi, Andy -

By reading the Digital Grin forum, I was able to find a way to have an .mp3 play for a particular image by putting code in the "caption" area. On Firefox it works great by putting a small QuickTime player in the caption that the user can click on to play the tune once through if they would like.

On Internet Explorer, it uses Windows Media Player and my only problem with that is that it offers the option to "download" the .mp3 being played. The author doesn't want people to be able to download the music (just listen to it online) and the download actually fails but I feel the message about downloading will generate questions/problems with the users.

Do you know if there is any way for the SmugMug command to explicitly cause QuickTime to be used to play the tune since QuickTime doesn't offer a way to download the tune, it just plays it?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Thank you for any help you can offer. I don't actually know how to force it to use QuickTime (that is generally a viewer's system setting), but do you realize that many Windows users to not have QuickTime installed? Windows Media player comes with a Windows computer, QuickTime does not. So forcing QuickTime would probably mean that many Windows users would not hear the music.

I would like to know if I can change the functions of how any of the gallery style templates work? If I chose the journal style gallery the page loads with a journal feel, but if you click on an image you loose the journal style and it becomes a click through slide style gallery. I would like the journal style to stay and not have the photos clickable.

In fact, can I customize any of the galleries and the way they function? Like adding return to gallery buttons and other custom navigation tasks.

Hi Andy,

I hope you don't mind me messaging you. I have just signed up to Smugmug. Apart from the gorgeous viewing galleries my main reason for signing up is that I love your moonriver website and really want to create mine with a similar layout!

I have been sent the your tutorial by the help team. I've managed to create a nav bar and logo in the header. I have also made a slideshow following the instructions. However, the slideshow is very small and in the centre of the page. I really want to enlarge it so that it fills the whole screen just like yours. I've been informed that to do this i need to enlarge my bio box... Do you have any tips or tutorials available which would explain how I can do this?

I would be very grateful for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.

I tried to search the forums for this but unfortunately no luck or I must not know how to read the computer talk of html and css.

I tried changing this:

oParams.forceSize = 'MediumURL';

to a LargeURL but that just cut up my pics in the slideshow. I really like the size of your slideshow on moon river photography, please help?!

I have read tons of tutorials and even learning css and html, and well I still cant create what I am after. for the 3rd image it would just be my logo on the main page. also I just sent a request to the heros because my sub-catogory that I was trying will not delete. Can you help me some,

Is there an easy way to apply the wide slideshow similar to your site? I've published a post under SmugMug Support but the one response didn't solve my issue. Thanks again Andy.I see one post of yours but its unreleated to this question.

My slideshow is made from images I cropped to 1000x500 px. That's the best way to do a wide format, IMO. Then, in slideshow settins, I made the dimensions 1000x500.

Quick question, my nav bar is working great, but I was wondering if there is a tutorial to set up pages like Andy's Services and Contact pages on the Moonriver site. I have the custom domain set up through godaddy, have my blog set up and have a web host as well if it requires that.

Do you have a tutorial on how to create a contact form like you have on you site: /gallery/4217152?

Dead simple, go to wufoo.com and make the form, then copy the code to a gallery description area, being sure to put it inbetween <html> and</html> tags. More? Post in the forum :D

I like my navbar as but I am afraid of changing it. I have found some code here but not sure how to integrate it in my current navbar. under my packages I would like a drop down to differentiate weddings , portraits ect. and in galleries I would like my galleries to have a list of the actual galleries ex. Art, football, soccer or infrared ect...

It must also be functional for FF and IE.
Thank You

I was searching posts on how to modify slideshows and didn't really find an answer. U seem to know your stuff and i was hoping you could point me in the right direction. What i was trying to do is make it possible to click an option in the navbar ex(Portraits) which would NOT take me to galleries but instead just a large screen slideshow with the navbar only. So, far i have it close but cannot seem to figure out a clean no frills slideshow in the "customize gallery"-->"gallery styles". I don't want arrows and a filmstrip or even a play button or speed. I just want it set and done with no options for the viewer. Any ideas how i can attain this?

I really love the simple layout of your Moon River site and wish to do something very simular. If you could guide me on the coding needed to set it up.. or point me in the direction of another that could, it would be very helpful. I have customized my site
so understand the basics, but find the theming to restrictive and prefer your theme with the new wide browser implemented.

Again any help would be appreciated. And what would be your suggestion if I have two photo business's, but want to share one smug mug account. I know I can set the theme, but can I have more then one alias for the web address?

Post your customizing question in the forum, so that everyone can assist.

Only one CNAME per account, I'm sorry :(

Your site is beautiful and I want mine to look as clean and slick and easy to use!! :-)

So I JUST joined smugmug and this forum. I was able to customize quite a bit - although some of the code on the FAQ page in smugmug doesnt work - like being able to have the caption above the photo - instead of bellow...and I am sure I will be able to find answers on this forum (prob by you or Ivar) but I was wondering if you could direct me as to where to look on the forum?

For example - I like how your contact page the picture is a nice size and then all the text - mine when I make the gallery into a journal - the picture is HUGE and I can't get it to change

Also - you obviously didn't use a pre-set theme - your pages are so clean - how did you do that?

Finally do you have any advice as to how to set up a client page with galleries for individual clients? Is that possible?
Ok too many questions - sorry. I will search the forums but if you could direct me at all I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!Hi, we can help with all of this - the way to best get the help is to post messages in the customizing forum, so we can all help :D

I would like to know how to build separate pages on my website. What I would like to have apart from my homepage is the "about me" page, "galleries" page and a "contact me" page.

I don't know much about website building, but I guess before following the tutorial on how to build a navbar I need to have those pages already created so that I can then link them with the navbar.. But how to create them?

I would really appreciate you help with this!

Lots of amazing help here on Dgrin - when you actually make a post in the customizing forum, helpers can help :D :wave thanks!

I have a person that I have been modeling my site after and now he has changed most of his site and still in his site there are things that i like and would like to do in my site this is his web address ****
I have my site set up the way I like it except for the breadcrumbs that lead the way to my Categories to the Galleries **** I don't like that people can go some where that I don't want them to go. For instance the Recent Works gallery had the breadcrumb of the travel blog in it till I found out how to delete it. Now it goes to the recent gallery which I don't like but have no idea on how to change, so that it won't.

Hi! Thanks for writing- great questions, please post them in the customizing forum, thanks!

I hope it's ok that I'm sending you a message. I'm not exactly sure how DGrin really works but see that you're someone who frequently answers questions so I'm hoping you can help me. I also hope that my question will be something relatively simple for you.

I would like to create a drop down nav bar. I would like it to be under "portfolio." In no particular order, I'd like my galleries in the drop down. Howevver, I would like "boudoir" to appear last as I am not sure yet how to make this a separate gallery (another day, another glass of wine).

I have received some limited help from another DGrinner. I haven't had any luck with the code she has provided. I'm very, very new to this and basically need things explained to be all the way down to the exact location to place the code. Also, there is someone that posts to this forum, I believe his screen name is dseidman. His dropdown is ideal to me.

Bits of code that I have tried has either resulted in my home page being a disaster or a bullet point version of a drop down right above my slideshow.

Anyway, any help you might be able to give me would be more than appreciated. I often bump my questions but only receive answers every now and then. Regardless, Smug Mug continually suggests that I post here.

Yup- post a new thread - it won't get lost. Put all your questions in there. We'll help - just not by PM, sorry!

Thanks :D

I actually do have my "own" thread. I had been posting questions there and receiving help with much success for a while. Then, I found myself bumping my question for two weeks straight then finally hiring someone to help me with what was probably a very simple fix. Because I didn't want to bump my question for two weeks this time or hire out again, I sent a private message. My apologies.

Hi,

I am extremely grateful for your tutorials which have helped me to set up my SmugMug webpage! I am running into a bit of a problem and am hoping you could help.

I first followed your tutorial for adding a custom header, navbar and slideshow. Things worked fine - although as I had yet to upload a photo to a gallery, the slideshow did not display anything. Next I uploaded a single photo. When I go to my webpage now, the slideshow displays the single image, however I have lost my custom header. If I tell the slideshow not to display anything (by choosing to display Most Popular) then I recover my header :cry

My page is christennantphotography.com. And I would be so thankful for any help you can provide.

Thanks a bunch,
chris

Hey Chris,

I think it might be that you have your banner image hidden, or in a gallery that has the external links disabled. Please check for that. If that doesn't help, please post in the customization support forum :thumb

add this and nuke all your other nophotos css

.notLoggedIn .nophotos {display: none;}

it hides it for all visitors across your site. YOU see it when logged in (useful).

FYI, my favorite version of this modification is:

.nophotos {background:none; border:none;}

This hides the box even when logged in, but still lets the buttons display. It allows people's site to work exactly like they used to work before the latest Smugmug change was made (everything but buttons hidden when logged in, everything hidden when not logged in).

It's unfortunate that this cosmetic style change was made in a way that caused ALL these people to have to modify their CSS. This enhancement (addition of border and background) could have been done in a way that wouldn't break all these customizations.

One question, how can i do a contact form as yours??? when you click the link another window pops!
can I put my background image, and one photo of me in it??

Really appreciatte your help!
Hi! Please do post in the forum. I'm on vacation in Sayulita, Mexico right now.

Best way is to just use SmugMug's contact the pro feature, if you are a pro on SmugMug - control panel, pros tab.

Hi Andy,
I'm sure you get tons of mail and questions but here goes - I'm looking to customize my smugmug website but don't know anything about HTML and CSS. I have read all of the tutorials and guides and got a little overwhelmed. Is there a basic template for a basic customization so that I can simply cut and paste into the appropriate areas for customizing? I want a simple banner created to appear on all pages with a nav bar that contains a home, galleries, about and contact form. I tried using the easy customizer but things didn't line up and I believe I had some tug of war between smugmug defaults and custom stuff. Anyway, my question is...are there simple cut and paste templates out there and if not, can you recommend someone to produce custom code for me? I don't want to spend a ton of money on it.
Thank you for taking the time to read/respond to this.

Hi! Don't feel overwhelmed - simply post in the customizing forum, give details on what you want, where you want it and the helpers will help you.

Post away :)

Andy, I really like the way you've set up your banner and Nav Bar. I'd like to have mine configured in a similar way. Can you point me in the right direction to a post or set of code I can copy/paste and modify as appropriate to my own site?

Just curious about the BLOG and the ability to add horizontal lines between separate posts. I've been looking around, but I find it hard to source the most pertinent material on the forums.

Can you point me in the right direction for setting up a blog like yours as well?

Sure - just have a look at http://andydemo.smugmug.com

Hey Andy,

I used your code for 4 across and it works like a charm, but I ned to add a some space on the top of the "boxBottom", or vertically center the contents in .boxBottom

I played around with some margins and stuff, but couldn't get it to happen.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Andy,

I found the answer to a customiztion question I had here: http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=300387&postcount=8

It centered the gallery description text underneath my featured galleries like I wanted. But it created a problem. It cuts off the last letter. The name of the gallery is "Cinematography", but it reads: "Cinematograph" after I added the centering code to my CSS. Any way to fix that my friend?

Can you tell me how you were able to create your individual page titles, starting with how you were able to remove the "-Powered by SmugMug"???

Many thx.

Hi, the page titles come from your Nicenames - gallery and category names. Be sure to fill out the page title in your customizing page also.

More? Post in the forum, thanks!

I have nicknames on all of my galleries and I have filled out my page title in my site wide customization but I'm still getting "-Powered by Smugmug" that shows up on all of my page title during any google searches.

Primarily, I would just like to remove that.

I just don't know where I am going wrong.
