This is my equipment for back up when far from home.
I use both gears for the same photos.
I want to be sure I will not loose my pictures...
The ipod works fine. :thumb

Thank you for sharing, redundancy is always a good idea.

How about getting a satellite uplink to the Internet and uploading to Smugmug too?

Hi! How did you hook up your iPOD with your Digital SLR ?
Not difficult as long as you have the compatible camera.
In the 20D I had to choose a different comunication.
It doesn't work with the 350 D (for my wife). There I have to move the CF from one camera to the other.

I need to send a warning here... I used ipod for backup, the only thing is that it drains the batteries of the ipod really fast. (I mean, REALLY FAST).
You have a big risk of loosing the contents of your flashcard...
I would never advise to anyone to use an ipod as sole backup...

I do put pics on my ipod when I am at home, when it is safely attached to the computer, so it can not go dead on me...

It also goes really slow... Forget downloading a two gig card on the ipod...

If I knew what I do today I would not buy the ipod for back-up. Because it is it's only function for me and please read the rest of this.
I do no listen to music throught it.
May be in some time I will use it as back-up data for work.
You have to look into the ipod home page the list of the compatible cameras to check if the Nikon X, Canon Y, works with it or not. Here:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipod.html (http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipod.html) and mainly
http://www.apple.com/ipod/compatibility/cameraconnector.html (http://www.apple.com/ipod/compatibility/cameraconnector.html)
I know there are not many cameras compatible. Be aware !
Not ALL the ipods are compatible with the cameras Be aware !
My ipod does not drain the energy that fast.
Anyway - as time goes by - that will be a problem ... The battery is going to be worned out and lazy...
I thought of such problem and I bought the charger...
Yesterday I read some manificent (!) trhreat about equipment backup here.
http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=32495 (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=32495)
This is excellent information about back-ups.
The cables were not included. Nor the charger, nor the adapter for the camera. Very expensive the hole business !...
I have only a 1Giga card the Sandisk Ultra III and I've never shot more than those 102 or 103 photos it allows in a day. (too few pictures ?)
But I do carry the ipod and the cable with me all the time...
Hope I have been of some help.
Regards for all.

I took my new video 60GB Ipod on vacation back a couple of months ago and used it for backing up my 20D. After downloading maybe 16 pictures as a test run, suddenly my music wouldn't play any more. I could see the songs show up in the display, but the Ipod would skip right over them and not play. Also, the pictures couldn't be viewed either. When I got home from vacation, hooking into my PC with Itunes immediately fixed the problem with no other intervention on my part. Personally, I think Ipods are extremely flakey for anything other than their intended purpose of playing music.

regards,
-joel
