I'm a rank newbie at this, but took this photo of the Eiffel tower-I find myself drawn to compositions with structure and contrast. I took this with a Canon SD 500, so I didn't have too much flexibility with the settings (but it sure is cute and easy to haul across Europe!). I though about cropping this square, but I think I like the length this gives.

Whip away!

well it's unmistakably the Eiffel Tower but I find it lacking a central point of focus/interest.

I find it the same as above, I am wanting to see the rest of it as I look at it. Where is that darned scroll bar on the bottom!

Welcome. Sorry mom, but I agree. It's nice but nothing more. I know it's tall but maybe a full view :dunno

there are so many eiffel tower photos and I like the effort to make one different with composition... I think this particular shot would go really well with a series of eiffel shots also selectively composed... I think this would satisfy the viewer's desire to see more without compromising your selective composition

I didn't feel like I needed to see more. This is a good composition. I like how you arranged the graphic shapes in the frame. I know it's the Eiffel Tower yet it seems that's not important for this shot. The shot is about the shapes....

The problem I see is that the contrast doesn't help bring out the shapes you're trying to show. The structure is too drab and the bright sky...well, it's too bright. The lighting is just not working for you here.

I find the washed out sky more of a distraction than the crop you used. Since color is playing very little part in this scene, b&w may have been a better way to go. :dunno

In the end, it's better than any eiffel tower pic I've taken, or ever will......:rofl

From my perspective, the composition is fine. I'd like to see more detail in the underside of the tower, as well as a little color in the sky.

The boring sky is bugging me most.
Making a selection of the sky and playing a bit with "levels" in photoshop usually is a good trick to make skies a bit more dramatic.

The reason I think it is so close, yet so far, is that the tower isn't vertical in your shot. You might of lost some depth but I think it would of worked.

I think the composition is inherently interesting.

I think you either need a nice blue sky maybe, with some cumulous clouds, or you gotta go to a straight B&W and blacken the tower structure, and drive the sky to white.

It seems kind of in-between here - neither color or B&W.

I think that the composition is nice. It is a strong, graphic image. I think that it would have worked better as a B&W. The problem that I have with it is, due to keystoning, it feels like the tower is falling back and the the left of the image.
