One of the "rules of thumb" is usually to leave room for movement.

I want this to have an 5x7 aspect ratio and to have the runner pretty much fill the frame (verticaly).

So here's the subjective question... which of these do you like better? Shoud I give Eric room to run and cut off the shadow, or keep the shadow and have him running from rather than to?

I prefer the top one. The shadow does not add enough to the phot to go to great lengths to include it. Give him some running room in the photo as opposed to running out of the picture!

The first one looks like he is running to something. The second looks like he is running away from something. I think you want the emotion invoked by the top photo, not the bottom.

thanks. I'm not sure why the shadow was bugging me, but you've helped me get over it :rofl
