by the way, we do have joshua trees in utah, just not in such high concentrations. nor are our utah j trees juxtaposed with such awesome quartz monzonite boulders.

Awesome shot. Love the vivid color. Makes the climber just jump out at you!

thanks for noticing. you wouldn't believe how hard it is to get these sort of athletes to do the most important thing.
wear bright colors that contrast against their enviroment!
it's no accident that he is wearing bright colors.
i called him weeks before we got together and stressed the importance of bright clothes.
i called him a handful of other times before the day and reminded him.
i made him change into brighter clothing when we finally got together AND borrowed someone elses white hat for the final red white and blue ensemble(sp?).
did i mention the importance of bright clothing?

What a difference it makes though!!! Don't get me wrong, the 2nd image is awesome too. But the contrast is so awesome with the right outfit.
Professional athletes, they just don't get it. lol I can say that because I raced snowmobiles professionally. One track minds, I swear!

This one's got a great look to it.
I'd like to shoot more climbing. My only climbing shots are from El Cap
Meadow and aren't all that exciting :D

free soloing = crazy!
but it sure makes for some nice uncluttered shots. I love that your climbing shots focus on the climber and his environment, rather than a closeup. While those sport type shots are powerful, I really like your take better.
great work :thumb

thanx for the compliments, Doctorit.
it is one of my goals to make viewers want to actually go and climb the routes and problems that i photo by shooting the whole thing from the best angle to show off the climb.
in essence, the climbs are the star.
however, i think everyone should use ropes and/or pads for safety.

I don't think this one is as compelling as the other. With the first, the viewer
kind of gets a peak at what the climber will see when he tops out. The lighting
is much more even where as in the second, you've got a lot of shadow in the
lower third of the picture

I agree... I was wondering why the second one didn't excite me as much, and you hit the nail on the head, you lose that gorgeous skyline in the second angle.
