lcd monitors

thought there might be some folk in here who may be able to share some knowledge.

i have a laptop w/ an lcd screen that i do all my photo-manip with. depending on what angle i'm viewing the montior from, images are brighter/darker or have different tones. how am i to be sure that what i see is what everyone else sees? is there a standard?
