View Full Version : SmugMug weekly maintenance window: Thursday night / Friday morning
Wireless
Mar-30-2006, 02:22 PM
SmugMug's weekly scheduled maintenance window is Thursday nights from 2200 Pacific to Friday morning 0300 Pacific.
We totally understand, downtime isn't fun, and you just might be one of the few that's up in the wee hours of the morning uploading photos. Unfortunately, there are cases in which we really need a time to bring the site down to perform various tasks and upgrade systems. This is one of the low points of the day/week, and it also coincides with our marathon feature testing/release night! We apologize if this impacts you.
Hopefully this gives you two gifts: Some extra sleep, and some new features to play with when you wake up all rested the next morning.
We will do our best to keep the work within the window, and we'll post to DGrin Thursday afternoon that we're going to be working that evening. Not all weeks will have new features or a need to perform maintenance.
The old Maintenance thread is here: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=2161

Hey all,
We expect to take the site down for a big feature release tonight during our normal maintenance window, assuming testing continues to go well. It'll likely be offline for the entire duration of our normal maintenance window.
We are going to try something new tonight. If it doesn't work, please don't kill me, but we're gonna try to put the site into 'Read Only' mode so people can still browse your photos, see them embedded out on the net, etc.
But that means you won't be able to upload new photos, log in, edit captions, leave comments, etc. Only view. There will be a big notice on the top of each page letting you know the site is currently undergoing maintenance, is in read-only mode, and may go offline at any time.
There will probably be a few minutes here and there where the site may not be as speedy, but if this test goes well, it should remain mostly online throughout maintenance.
Wish us luck!

Kudos for moving to a read-only update where the site keeps serving images during maintenace! That's a great move. I hope it works well tonight.

Don,
that sounds like a great maintenance feature, especially for us Europeans over here that get hit the complete Friday morning. :barb
I'm staying tuned to the release as well. :clap
All the best,

We didn't finish testing in time, so we're waiting until next week.
Enjoy SmugMug tonight, everyone. :)

That's alright! We better have a properly tested release than a buggy one and still can wait another week. This also gives you maybe a little time to relax your bleeding eyes.
I overslept the maintenance period anyways and I'm glad that I didn't miss the new read-only feature! :D

During our normal weekly scheduled maintenance window tonight, we’ll be making some database architecture changes.
We hope and anticipate that the site will remain up the entire time, though it may go into read-only mode for a short while. In the event we have to take the site offline, we’ll do everything we can to minimize the downtime.
Read About it, here (http://smugmug.wordpress.com/2008/05/01/site-maintenance-tonight-51-10pm/)
And subscribe to the feed of that blog to see be notified in the future, as well :thumb

Is this just to do with the N levels galleries? Or, is there something else more exciting? Like COUPON CODES, PACKAGES and/or Analytics plug-in? :ivar Perhaps something even more super-duper like AJAX based drag and drop gallery layout, etc..? :clap

Oh bringing back an old thread containing "Hopefully this gives you two gifts: Some extra sleep, and some new features to play with when you wake up all rested the next morning" was just WRONG! Ya had me all excited till I read the date on it. Hope it's not just a behind the scenes database thing that we won't notice... :D

So I'm getting the read-only message. Any idea how long that will be? I don't see anything about maintenance today in this thread and didn't get a message about it.
I do realize it is smack right in the middle of the weekly maintenance time and that was poor planning on my part. Just wish I had known about the maintenance or read-only mode in advance.

Sorry for the hassle. You could expect a maintenance to happen every week during our scheduled window, then you would be on the safe side in terms of planning. More info on all maintenances when they do happen can be found on our wordpress blog (http://smugmug.wordpress.com/).

It's a shame that Dgrin was down during the same time. Yes, I know that's why you have the blog. Yes, I subscribe to the blog.
- Andy's blog update was at 9:56PM PDT.
- I happened to notice at 10:43PM PDT (I was trying to write some docs for parents at my son's preschool on how to use AlbumFetcher).
- FeedBlitz sent me a notice at 11:24PM PDT that SmugMug was down.
Yeah, so much for a blog being the solution to downtime notification.
So yes, this was during your weekly maintenance window. I suppose we've been lulled into complacency because uptime has been so good, and usually maintenance just means a red box at the top of every page (read-only mode), or worst-case, a cartoon with servers in the desert.
This time, it was this nasty error message:
Internal Server Error - Read
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Reference #3.6b41a45.1222407709.1e68652
And what really gets me is that while SmugMug has time and time again said they will not send e-mails with outage notices, I was surprised to get this e-mail just last week from news@smugmug.com:
Subject: [SmugMug] Quick News: Yo ho! Ye have metallic prints and more to sell...
From: news@smugmug.com
X-Mailer: SmugMug v1.0
On International Talk Like a Pirate Day ( http://www.talklikeapirate.com/ ) , the good Ship SmugMug stashed extra treasure in the hold. Landlubbers won't be seeing it until ye set yer prices, so cast your eyes on the booty ( http://smugmug.com/prints/catalog.mg ) and make some extra doubloons. Yarrr!

OMG, I would so prefer to get notices about last-minute "hard" outages like this than what's new in the store.
Ah well, least now Dgrin is back up so I can whine about it somewhere. :-}

I'd really like to get an email at 5-6 PM on the Thursdays you think you might need to use the window.
Also, the error message tonight is especially nasty. Can we at least get the cartoon instead of the death-screen? You're getting a few new topics from users who are confused about such a "severe" appearance...
[edit @ 3 AM.] ...there we go, got the "window browsing mode" finally. Wish I could do some overnight uploading too, but it's all good! Just culled four events and processed three, I'm headin' to bed!

I believe so... I can see my pictures, but can't do anything with them. I'm also unable to login.
It would be real nice if they could post a solid time when the site will be back up.
This banner has been at the top of the site for the past 5+ hours:
"The Sorcerers of Smug are adding new magic right now, so we're in window shopping mode. You can view all the photos you like, but for a few minutes we're unable to sell prints or take new photos or comments. Stay tuned! The SmugMug team (http://cmac.smugmug.com/gallery/2504559)"

Sending the emails is not a trivial thing, but I'd love it if we could. I know the Ops guys would, too. We can't always do that. I'll run a few more ideas by the guys after things settle down today.

Andy,
I'm still unable to add new photo galleries. The dialog window appears but no "enter/send" button for initiating the process. Many logo's are "faded-out" which leads me to believe the website isn't fully functional as yet. This was at 8:50 AM EDT, 9/26/08.

It's not trivial? As I mentioned, you *did* recently send a note about Talk Like A Pirate Day/new merchandise to news@smugmug.com.
Seems like people who have opted-in to that list might be interested in an upcoming 5+ hour outage where their websites look really really broken (not read-only, no cute cartoons).

Hey, does anybody have a screenshot of the "SmugMug is in read-only mode, blah blah blah" that you put up during downtimes like that?
One of the parents at my son's school was trying to upload on Thursday, and gave up in frustration. and I think she was just using the Simple uploader, so she should've seen the message, but she claims she didn't.
I was going to send a note to all the parents to beware of uploading Thursday nights, but if I could attach a screenshot of what exactly to look for, that would be even swell-er.
Also, the image of the computers in the desert for more dire downtimes would be nice as well.
Thanks!!

Very sluggish today. Trying rearranging Fine Art galleries and won't do? Hi Al. Can you please run some tests for us and email the results to the Heroes: http://www.smugmug.com/help/emailreal.
First run a Traceroute from SmugMug to you. We've got a handy tool to help us see the connection quality between you and SmugMug. Go here:
http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/traceroute.mg
You will see the results on your screen and also receive an email with the results that you can send to us.
Then run a Traceroute from you to SmugMug:
Try these instructions to run a traceroute on a PC:
http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/2959046
To run a traceroute on a Mac, follow the instructions here:
http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/3073291
Finally please run a Line Quality test:
You go here: http://www.dslreports.com/linequality
Sign up and run the test. Registration there is free. After you run the test, copy the link to the results for us. That will let us know if there is an issue with the line preventing photos from arriving to our servers. Email us the link to the results when you get them.

Hi Al. Can you please run some tests for us and email the results to the Heroes...Email us the link to the results when you get them. Hi, Nick. Three tests completed and emailed to Heroes. Tests seemed okay. Had a bit of problem with DSL Reports Line Quality. Their instructions for Norton are very old. I finally set my router to allow pingback and worked okay then.
Anyway, running latest updates of XP Home and FF with no problem until this AM. Cleared FF cache, rebooted and tried again. 'Arrange' simply doesn't work when trying to use for galleries under Fine Art category. Selected last gallery, PhotoArt, and moved to first place and saved. Gallery remains in last spot. Have tried a number of times. Doubt if it is a connection problem. Help :scratch

Last night (and this morning) I am not able to log in to my account. (I first discovered this with Jeffrey's Lightroom Plugin retruning an error -- the I couldn't get in manually.) I thought maybe a Smugmug system cahnge might have generated a new password, so I requested a "forgotten password" ping last night -- and I still have not received a response. (I use IE 7)
Any ideas on what is happening?

Just read this there:
"SmugMug is currently offline. It’s for just about the dumbest reason I’ve ever seen for a site being offline (our load balancer licenses expired – and the guy in charge of them knew they were expiring – but it had slipped his mind).
Thanks to the nature of the outage, we can’t even put up a friendly and apologetic error message, which makes things even worse.
Needless to say, we’re very embarrassed and working on getting it resolved. A thousand apologies for this stupid outage. "

i like the new uploader better... it doesn't "hang up" on the jpegs until i close the browser like the old one did... you know...like, upload a photo then can't rename it or delete it or anything since it's "still in use." plus it doesn't have that stupid always-on-top pop up in the way either. :thumb

There's no use kicking and screaming. They are working as fast as they can, just have some patience. I too have been waiting to to a major upload. At least they do regular maintenance, it prevents major problems from happening. Everyone complains to them about more and more features, well, looks like they are working on one. So, sometimes if you want more features, you have to have some downtime, that's just the way it works.

I know time flies when you're out chasing after those issues, but it feels like eternity for people who have to wait in the dark. You can tell people truthfully that you don't really know exactly how long it'll take, but people don't like to hear that. It's better to give them an estimated time and be done earlier or keep them informed if extended time is needed.

The New Simple uploader (in-browser) has a feature that is very good: skip duplicates - so you can dump all the files in again and we'll ignore dupes for you.

Thanks, Andy, I'll try that. I've killed the 9 strange "error" duplications, I think. So I'll dump the whole last upload in and see how it does, since 30+ out of 180 failed.
Those considering Smugmug, this is quite uncharacteristic.
ETA: Simple uploader, some worked, errors claiming "file format" problems, horrendously slow. Uploaded to a different gallery, tiny one. Errors nearly the whole way, maybe one or two photos uploaded. I'm done. Will go check my connection next.
ETA 2: It appears my ISP is chugging along at dialup speed, I'll bet that's at fault for today's stuff.

I find that the skip duplicate option is not all that accurate. I had 10 errors in my last upload (out of 150), I tried the skip duplicate option and the numbers didn't add up. So, with only 10, I went into the log, wrote down the file #s and selected only those for uploading. Would not want to do this for 400+ images, however. With that # I would consider scrapping the whole gallery and starting fresh when everything is up and running again smoothly.
As for how often this happens - I know the stats are out there someplace - all I can say is, when Smug Mug is working, it's the best - can't be beat, but these down times are hellish, and this is the third Biggie I can remember in the past 6-12 mos.
Edit: It turns out that when I was putting the finishing touches on my gallery, sorting, editing, I discovered that out of 294 files, only 210 loaded (which explains the discrepancy between error # and non-duplicates). I am now starting the whole gallery from scratch. It might behoove others who downloaded anything today to check their galleries carefully.

You're right. The entire gallery was FUBAR so I've just deleted it all and will re-add. My stats will go to hell and my users will be inconvenienced but that's the breaks. I've done several small galleries since with no problems.

This was all I could get from any SM site inc SM homepage, my site, email help and also DG:
"Internal Server Error - Read
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Reference #3.acdaf180.1250249110.19c5e9f"
So not read-only mode. Don't know if you guys at SM were aware that this was happening but all I (and apparently others (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=738083)) could get was a blank page from any SM site with the above error message

We got the maint part done, but the new feature didn't get launched, due to the network surgery taking much longer than expected. Stay tuned!

It's fine now Andy, didn't need to clear cache, it was justa bit freaky earlier as it wasnt even read only - just blank pages with that error message, and I'd never seen maintenance do that before, and not to DG as well as every SM site - so it caught me off guard to get a total blank at every turn:(:

Everyone seems to stay very gentle which is fine but from my side I'm becoming more and more nervous (and disappointed) every week with those maintenances.
I'm loosing time and money by having this site too often offline for solving issues. This is becoming unacceptable.
As customer, may I ask you what are your plans to avoid in the future those issues. A read-only mode from time to time (very limited in time) could be acceptable but a complete shut down for many hours is unacceptable and have a business impact on your customers.
Thanks in advance for your clarifications.

Over the years we've rarely used our Thursday maintenanc windows... we've done a whole lot of network and operation surgery lately, to make Smuggy stronger and more stable as we grow. Our CEO posted here about it http://smugmug.wordpress.com/2009/08/10/scheduled-maintenance-tuesday-811-and-thursday-813/
it's not our normal routine and I expect we'll very soon get back to 'normal' which means using our weekly maintenance window not-so-often.
Sorry for the hassle, and thanks for being here with us.

Why is it we never get to know what the upgrade is. I know some upgrades I never new about until I stumbled on to them months after they were already there. And yes I check the wordpress but as any one can look pack and see that it never says what the "upgrade is" It would just be nice if we were told because some options are nice to actually put to use.

Hi Folks, new feature being added, but we're doing it Friday night late (10pm CA time). http://smugmug.wordpress.com for more info. We would have liked to finish during our window today, but there was a risk of going over time, which would impact folks on the east coast and Europe, who are in their daylight hours right now. So, we'll finish the job tonight while most of our customers are sleeping. Thanks as ever, for your patience and support. We're all really excited about this release, it's been a while in the baking and making.

Also, if they redid the Advanced Customizer to make it more user friendly and with larger input boxes would be great. However I don't expect that will happen in this release. I'm sure there are several things that we all would love but can't happen all at once obviously.

I actually do most of the code editing in a real editor then paste it in. It's MUCH easier, I get code collapse, highlighting, etc.. and there's much less chance of messing something up :)
Notepad++ ( http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm ) is a great programmers editor. Free too! :)

Hey Andy
First of all, thanks to you and all your team for efforts making SmugMug and SmugMug served websites better everyday, God bless you all.
I wonder if the said features are kept as a surprise for us SmugMug users, I'm dying to see what they are.
Now, being a user from Dubai (UAE) +4 GMT means I'm one of the most affected users by being offline since the time that you consider most of the users would be sleeping, my visitors and I would be awake. I know that users from my time zone could be a minority among SmugMug users so I'd like to request from you and your team to generate an automated email notification sent to each respected user 12 or 24 hours before going offline, I hope it could be possible:scratch . Of course it's not convenient to keep on watching the blog at all times to see if there's maintenance or not. It happened several times to me that my website went offline right after that I sent online promotions to visit my website especially when upload new stuff.
Thanks and good luck

Can you please write us with the results so we can help diagnose your speed issue? Using the nav flyout menu, try going to Client Access --> Wedding Clients (or any of the subcats in that menu)
Also, if I go to Gallery --> Weddings using the flyouts, it brings me to http://www.timnosenzophoto.com/Gallery and not the Weddings subcat
All subcats links fixed, should be fine the way they were :)

:nah that was about a year ago or more? :D
What has happened to my theme??
Now that we are back online - some of it has gone missing -
There should be a broad stripe through the middle. My theme is called 'Experimental'

I've tried this several times -- but I always get the following when I click the Entriess (RSS) to get a link I get:
The webpage cannot be displayed
Most likely cause:
Some content or files on this webpage require a program that you don't have installed. What you can try:
Search online for a program you can use to view this web content. (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=57427&protocol=feed)
Retype the address.
Go back to the previous page. (http://javascript<b></b>:history.back();)
I've tried the suggested alternatives ... no luck.

SERIOUS issue...
If your custom domain is set to www.wolfsnap.com and you go to www.wolfsnap.com it works. BUT, if you go to wolfsnap.com, this morning you only get the smugmug homepage! You're not resolving wolfsnap.com as equivalent and forwarding to www.wolfsnap.com as you've done since this upgrade.
