Starting off with this:

I used the pen tool to create a vector mask for a hue/saturation adjustment layer. Adjusting sliders to taste:

If anyone cares to play around with this image you can click on the original for a full size copy, and here is a link to a full size mask (http://ab0wa.smugmug.com/photos/61983091-O.jpg) that might be helpful.

Because this image contains such a simple set of colors, I thought it was an interesting candidate for a color change without any masks. So, I converted to LAB and applied a curve on the A channel (which is where the red is strong). I got this result:

By applying this curve with no masks:

I would guess that this image could be manipulated without a mask in other ways using things like selective color, etc... but I didn't try those methods.

Just thought I'd share. I love to avoid a mask whenever possible.

Here's one done using selective color in RGB mode targetting just the reds.

With this selective color setting and no mask:

I just happened to use this image for practice with the pen tool.

Ahhh, I get it. You're working on sample images for your chapter 4 writeup on the pen tool. Cool!

BTW, it was RGB select color range, then apply color gradient. Clone away the Katy, and slap on Cletus :D
