stand alone CF to DVD Burners, anyone use one?

I've been looking for options to store images on trips.

Prices are getting kind of crazy for HD storage so I am looking at just burning DVD's of RAW's for trips directly from CF cards.

Anyone have any opinions.

Addonics MFR, the CD version, about two years old. Hasn't let me down yet.

(and it plays DVD movies, which is why it is kept in the TV cabinet. Only photo product the wife actually likes and uses :lol3)

I'll probably get the 8x DVD burner before the Utah trip since it's in the mid 200's, and you're right, $600 for something backup, is a whole lot of money.

Takes longer, sure, but I'll be able to accomplish a real genuine backup every evening (making two duplicate DVD's), then wipe the cards clean for the next day's shooting.

Hard drives are going perpendicular. The first are available late this year, early next. This primarily will affect the smaller devices, but I think it will effect all hard drives (External, internal, server, etc.) Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think the price per GB will fall as well. (Laptops are going to start coming with 160 GB HD (http://www.wired.com/news/wireservice/0,70024-0.html?tw=wn_tophead_13)) Initial expectations are double the space, and long term projection of this technology has boasted 10x the space. so your 300 GB external drive for around $200-300 that everybody is considering will soon be a 3 TB (terrabyte) drive for about the same price. The technology will definately affect MicroDrives as well. And your 60 GB ipod Photo could soon be a 600 GB ipod Photo. (Years away, but the technology has started)

Something to consider in purchasing any HD or new Card for your camera, or a backup device. DVD's are transient as well - BluRay standards will be out soon.

My recommendation (FWIW) would be to wait a year or two on a backup device, and then the 300 GB External bcakup drives will be under $100, rather than blow the money on a device that can only backup 4-9 GB per media. (Course, by then we'll all be shooting at what... 40 MP?)

Jamoke, waiting isnt really an option. I only have 12 gigs of CF cards and I just took pictures of egrets and herons for 2 hours and filled up a 4 gig. So I can go buy 8 more gig for $300 or a DVD burner.

The other thing is, you need you back up your hard drives with DVD's or another hard drive just in case when you travel. So why not make 2 DVD's of each CF card and be done with it as there is little chance of a DVD degrading in a month.
