Absolutely! Proprietary raw formats are at best a headache for the consumer.

I'd be a lot more sympathetic to Adobe's .dng campaign if they weren't trying to screw us out of money by forcing us to upgrade to CS2, before letting us use it.
In other words, they're hypocrites.

Huh ?!?!? Do you need to be more specific about your comment? From the system requirements (http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/main.html) for the free DNG converter:
"DNG is supported by Adobe® Photoshop® CS2, Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements 3.0, and Photoshop Elements 4.0 (Windows) software."
You sound like you might be talking about CS not supporting newer Camera Raw versions and therefore not supporting newer Raw formats, which is a true bummer, but in that case, DNG actually saves the day. If CS can't open a newer Raw format, the file can be converted to DNG using the free converter and then the DNG can be opened in CS.
On topic, if Adobe completely walked away from DNG, it would still have legions of supporters. The OpenRAW site mentioned in the first post is not commercially affiliated, according to its About page.

You know, I read that same page. I downloaded DNG, tried to open 5d RAW files - no dice. :dunno

OK, I'm a dummy. Of course, I've known this for years, but I do try to hide it from others. :evil
After reading colourbox's post, I went back to Adobe's site, make more mistakes, and finally found and inserted the CS RAW 2.4 update. Now, DNG works.
So, I apologize for accusing Adobe of trying to extort money out of me in order to use DNG. Actually, they're only trying to extort money out of me in order to convert 5D CR2 files.

I didn't know this either. Very interesting. I am going to try it again and see if I can do what I need with CS.
edit: Never mind, I mistook cs for PS7. Nevermind, I thought I saw a glimmer of hope of dumping the activation scheme.
Oh well, I have to wait longer.
