it's *that* time of year for many dgrinners! okay guys, let's see 'em. post your fall shots right here in this thread.

i went out today, it's still early for peak so i drove about an hour north and found these... still not peak, but i did find some really good spots for next weekend :D

need some help? either at shoot, or in post, there's plenty of poop right here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=2819)

these shots handheld, canon 20d with 70-200L f/2.8 i.s. aboard, iso 400. negative ec of -2/3s. shot in raw, processed in adobe camera raw, then contrast, color, exposure adjustments in ps cs. the train tracks shot was taken thru a chain link fence, from a highway overpass, and it's the full frame, in fact, all shots are full frame no cropping.

Normally, the June Lake Loop affords a great look at fall colors. However,
it hasn't really been cold enough to get things going. This is Silver Lake
which is about mid-way down the loop. June Lake is located on the Eastern
side of the Sierras. Between the towns of Bridgeport and Mammoth Lakes.

The sky is blown out but look in the trees for some color :D

Taken about 2w ago.

Hi Lonebear00. To make the link work, you have to have .jpg at the end of it. The link you used is to your entire gallery. And it looks like you have turned-off permission to link to your individual images. You have some beautiful pictures in your gallery, really nice work. :nod

Same problem, Lonebear00. The link is to your entire gallery.

Hey, click on this link, (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=92) it will tell you everything you need to know about linking your photos to dgrin.

But as I said, it looks like in your Smugmug account, you've turned off permission to link to your photos. :dunno Until you change that setting in your Smugmug account, you will not be able to link to individual shots. :cry

sid - thanks so much!

actually - i ran my velvia action on them, but then dialed it back to maybe 22% or so. the increased saturation on the oranges really started to look hinky.

i love vivid colors, but i'm finding myself being really critical lately in terms of oversaturating.

Its the middle of spring down here !!!! , you'll have to wait 6 months for some of the Autumn colours from Au.

Having said that though, I have a liquid amber tree that is thoroughly confused, and still has some of its Autumn leaves, whilst its sprouting its new growth. Might be an interesting contrast photo.:thumb

And I forgot that our Monarchs are an annual autumn event, so they are fall colors.

Am trying to get stuff worked up, takes a moment. One of my monarch shots could have used more depth of field. But I didn't plan this. Not at all. Planned to go home after church.

Andy, does the centering here bother you? I notice that I am centering a lot lately. I like it, but I hear a lot here about centering. I know there was a reason here, as in, through the viewfinder it looked best. I know all the "rules", but sometimes I like things centered.

How do you feel about that?

Andy

yes, it does. and that air conditioner unit does, too. unfortunately, if you crop, you'l have a t00-big stack of punkins for the scene ...

next time: step back a bit, and compose a bit more carefully :)

lovely colors though, and the scene is great

I am flattered that you liked this one - as a result I went back to the originals from that sequence of images and found one that I prefer. I am going to post it twice to demonstrate how different color spaces are viewed on the web.

The first is direct from Photoshop after post processing in Adobe colorspace and just saved as a jpg
http://pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/9731646-L.jpg

The second image was the same file in Photshoshop that was converted to sRGB colorspace before saving and uploading to smugmug. So the files are completely identical except that the second image had its color space tagged as sRGB before uploading to smugmug. The first was still in the Adobe colorspace when it was saved for upoading to smugmug. Notice any differences?

Lynn, is that the place that Kelby and others say to put on Adobe 1998, or something like that?

In other words, where do we change the color space?

ginger (I just love these questions I ask, they are so "for idiots". I just don't know some things)

If that is the place where Kelby says to put Adobe, there he gives us numbers and stuff for other places, curves I think. Is he "wrong" there, too? For us?

Baldy wrote me something about this, posted it, when I was trying to do the boy with the birds, I didn't understand how to apply what he wrote. I am thinking that this is it. So I am just trying to understand how to apply this.

think of srgb as the lowest common denominator - it's a color space that should display properly on most monitors...

I am sorry if I have been confusing, Lynn.

I have Photoshop set up so the color space is Adobe RGB1998. Indeed, my camera is set up to save the images in Adobe RGB1998. So when I bring images into Photoshop they are processed in Adobe RGB1998 and archived in Adobe RGB1998 as .psd or tiff or jpgs.

BUT when I KNOW I plan to upload a jpg to smugmug for display on dgrin, I wil convert the image to the sRGB colorspace before uploading it, so that it will not be displayed online in a paler, less contrasty version. I do this by going to Image, Mode, Assign Profile or what ever the command is on your version of PS... :clap

Here in the Washington DC area fall has hardly started, except for some of the younger trees and grasses/ground cover as here
http://roadrunes.com/images2/PA120002.JPG

Rather what has been so noticeable this year is how GREEN everything has been this fall, usually by now the colors are becoming muted, but if anything they are more vivid now than all this past summer. Even the pic above shows this. Another picture taken 2 weeks ago up in the highlands of Md does show some color changes but not much.
http://roadrunes.com/images2/tree-in-pond.jpg
This one is kind of fun, notice how the middle area seems a little rippled? That's because this is acually a reflection in a pond. I just turned the picture upside down because it seemed a bit confusing somehow having so much of it a reflection . So in fact the "reflection" at the bottom of the picture is really the "original" and the "original" is the reflection!:D

You reflection shot is great. I never would have noticed that the majority of the frame was a relection. In fact it took me a minute after i read what you wrote to really see what you meant. Its too bad you caught some of the reeds from the bank you took the picture from in the top (or bottom depending on how you look at it) of the frame. Great job though.:thumb

This is a nice dried out sectional leaf. It has a darker leaf pattern on it that is rather neat..

I will definitely be back - but probably not this riding season. I would like to come back right after Labor Day and ride 650s on the back roads a bit. I might be able to talk my son and his KTM to join me also :1drink Thanks for the invite.

We don't have fall colors in San Diego. We do have a few liquidambar trees. And I mean a few. We have 3. There are a few planted around town. They are just starting to turn red. Here's one nice leaf.

And here are the trees that dropped it.

We do have some berries. This is a California native shrub. A Toyone, I think.

This is the Episcopal church in Newton Lower Falls. That maple tree was aflame yesterday afternoon! It's kind of cliche, but then agaain, how much more prefect could it have been?

Jim, your fall shots are wonderful, but I was especially struck by these two. I knew right away without having to look that you were the photographer.

http://pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/10235323-S.jpg

Wonderful composition and great find. I love the golden field in the foreground. I wonder if it would be possible to bring up the background a bit and make it look a little less misty? Some sort of curve steepening move might accomplish this without any local touchups. I'm not sure if it would actually be an improvement. I love this shot the way it is, but if it were mine, I'd try to make the background more clear.

Isn't there a Clint Eastwood chick flick about you, Jim? How many covered bridges are there within a 1 hour ride of your house? It's amazing how you keep discovering ways to make this subject fresh and interesting.

Both of these are swell. I've been trying to capture the fall colors of water surfaces, but you've done a better job than I have been able to do. There is this property of calm water this time of year -- it's both highly reflective and very black. It's very striking to me and I see it everywhere. I wonder what's the cause. Optical? Biological? Anyway, your leaves in the puddle image captures it perfectly. Don't lose that shot!

I like your water lilly also Thomas. The green colors are very soft and restful.

I was thinking about Rutt's statement about black water and tried to process a few of my shots of leaves in the water but have abandoned them as they are not worthy after Lynn's lovely shots.

John - your maple tree and church front are lovely and belong on a New England calender.

I went back and tried to improve my barn per your suggestions. My biggest problem is that the barn is 200 or 300 yards from the road and I have not had the temerity to just waltz out on the fellows field to shoot the barn from closer up and hence my image suffers from significant atmoshperic haze. I did not use a polarizer and in retrospect this was a mistake. I was shooting at f22 and 1/30th sec at 200mm with a 70-300 DO IS on a 20D on a tripod. I should have gotten permission to get much closer and the image would have been much better. You have seen this barn before when I shot it in the snow - it obviously is a favorite subject of mine. I'm a would be farm boy - I admit it. I am not an urban dweller by choice.

Here is the image I posted that you commented on

Here is the same image after further sharpening and a little bump in saturation with the saturation brush. Is this any better?

Actually the chick flick was "The Bridges of Madison county" but it was in Iowa. I live in Indiana. That's a different state that begins with an I to you right coasters.
:D
Parke county is about 25 mile north of my home, and claims 32 existing covered bridges - most of which are in use by traffic every day. Putnam county claims 9 covered bridges and I think I have a photograph of all 41. My goal is to have one of each bridge in the four seasons if I can accomplish it. There is also 1 bridge just over into Illinois and one in Vigo county where I reside.
I don't know why they fascinate me, but they do - they tend to be in remote rural areas, frequently with gravel roads in rugged hilly terrain unlike the usual Indiana flat farmland of cornfields... Some are impressive structures like the West Union bridge which is no longer open to traffic, but is a double span bridge......
