I need to rent a 300 2.8 lens but I noticed that my rental place has a 2.8 IS L and a 2.8 L flavor for the 300mm canon lens. Is there an difference in quality/sharpness? The cost difference is only $5, but I know IS lenses weigh more.

They're both razor sharp. But, I'd get the IS. And a monopod.
Bones - you have two emails from me - involving a customer of yours. Can you please respond :evil

I rented a 300/2.8 once. Wanted to try it. I found the AF to be slower than I was expecting. Slower than my 70-200/2.8/IS. I was told to expect that, and that the newer version was much faster (this was a VERY OLD and well worn rental lens). I have a 300/2.8/IS now and it focuses lightening fast. And it is my sharpest lens I own.
50/1.4, 24-70/2.8, 28-135/IS, 70-200/2.8/IS, 300/2.8/IS

Depends what you're gonna shoot with it. If it's sports or fast moving critters, IS may not be terribly helpful.

Depends on the sport. :) If I'm doing a long-shutter pan in motorsports, IS mode 2 is very helpful. When I (briefly) did youth football, fast shutters ruled and IS was always off.

Ugh, I gotta update that email address for you Andy, I barely check that one (too much spam). Thanks for hitting me here.
The lens will be for motorsports racing photos. I cannot afford to buy one now (nearly 4k and I just bought a 1D Mark 2 and a 24-70 L 2.8) so I can rent one for $35/day.
I chose the 300 IS L 2.8 and a monopod in the end.
