I bought my 60 Gb ipod for 3 reasons:
Transfer photos from my Canon 20 D when I am travelling
Travel with business information from one computer to another
Have a complete list of my contactsI do not know how to write directly on the ipod the contacts.
Can you give me a hint please ?:dunno
I will buy the connector for the pictures transfer later on.
Do you have any experience about this ?
Does it work nicely ?:dunno
Thank you.:thumb

There's no way to enter contacts on the device, other than through synchronization. I've only tried this on Windows: you can sync your contacts from a PIM like Outlook through iTunes. I'm sure either iTunes for the Mac has similar functionality (with Address Book), or may be it even uses iSync?
You will be disappointed with the photo storage. My review is only a few words long: it sucks on the road! Speed is dog slow, and it's killing your battery life of both your camera and your iPod. To proof that I'm not alone: Mike Lane had some experience too, as you can read in another thread (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=2465). His words: EDIT: The iPod is not a good solution for portable storage. Move along, move along.....
Enjoy the iPod for music storage, for data storage, for picture viewing (when synchrnoized...) but save the bucks for the camera connector and put those towards another Portable Storage Device.

Forget about it. The iPod maybe could be cool for that, but it isn't. Believe me, it sucks.
Now with anapod explorer (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/) you could very likely have a way to sync biz docs and other files from your computer.

The thing was expensive (rather) am I do not want it for music but only for the contacts and the photos...
I should have posted before and not after the purchase. :bash
Thank you. Very kind of you to give me these sad notes...:):

I went for a PSD without a screen. All I want is to offload images. Reviewing I'll do at home. I finally ended up comparing two devices: the Compactdirve PD70X and the NexTO CF. I went with the latter, since I needed a Firewire port (it's the only fast connection on my old iBook). If USB2 would have been sufficient, I would have went with the PD70X, since it uses regular AA batteries. Both use regular notebook type harddisks, which are user replaceable. I've ordered through jaldigital.com.au, and had good experiences (in price and service) with them. Even with shipping and VAT, they were very competitive.

Well, this doesn't fit all requirements for many, but I would argue that you're better off bringing a laptop and downloading at the end of the day. One thing that I think is important is to verify your files, to make sure they aren't corrupted. You wanna shoot all day on a bad card, download them and then go out shooting again? No, that would be bad.
I don't know for sure, but I would bet that having a PSD with a screen won't help, either, since the embedded preview could be fine, but the image file itself could be bad.

I am going to get one of these (http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?sku=5637756&SourceID=k22350):
basically Google for a USB "On-the-go" enclosure. These act as USB Host, allowing other USB devices to connect and download to it, including your camera. You then purchase a harddrive (on sale of course) and plug it in the enclosure. For less than $100 (with the right HD deal) you can get a standalone 60+GB photo vault. T

I generally agree with your assessment that ideally the ability to review on a notebook screen would be best. I would have loved to bring my iBook to my trips in Africa, but there's this weight limit in those small Cessna planes, and the thing that I didn't have access to any power source for 10 days in a row. The Nexto CF (with the free additional battery) gave me 30 GB of backup in those 10 days. Since firmware 1.3 the Nexto CF does have full file verification, comparing backed up data on the HDD and original data on the CF card to verify the backup result. Not perfect, but the best I could do.

Just a little tip between my gymnastics and my formal dinner:
my ipod is from Aple. It has 60 Gb.
Does this change anything ?
See you.

Nope, alas it doesn't change a thing. All iPods are Apples, otherwise they'd be MP3 players. I'm sorry, it's a great device, but not for the major things you'd like to do with it.

So at this point, either enjoy your iPod for music, and might I recommend the Studio-Lighting.net Podcast (http://www.studiolighting.net/)? But, why not give the Belkin device try? It may work for you, slow or not.

I was lucky enough to read Mike Lane's post before I bought my ipod. Instead, I did some research and ended up with an 30GB iaudio X5. It's not the best for everything, and has some issues like most devices out in the market place. However, it was the best fit for me since I wanted to listen to music, allows me to transfers photos, and use it a portable HD when I need it (USB host). I can find better devices for each task, but the X5 does all it in a that is size of an ipod.
Over all, I'm pretty happy with it.

I have some recent relevant experience. I just returned from the Dominican Republic, where I had my new Ipod 60G Video, and my 20D, complete with Apple camera connector. After the first day, I connected, loaded my pictures into the Ipod, and from that point on was unable to listen to music for the rest of the trip. The song index was present, and all my songs appeared there. However, when ever I attempted to play one, it simply skipped the song after a few seconds of silence, and moved onto the next song. So it kind of cycled silently and quickly through 20GB of songs without actually making a sound. Connecting it to Itunes when I returned home magically fixed the problem. Boy was I pissed. :splatI did not try backing up any photos after that because there was no indication that the first set of photos were still there. After returning home, I also discovered the photos were on the Ipod, however, the last few I'd taken were missing. That was odd.
I will say that both RAW and JPG files were in the mix, and perhaps this is what confused the Ipod. Also, I had Ipod s/w V1.0, and just upgraded to the new 1.1 release. So I guess I'll try it again and see what happens. :dunno

Thank you for sharing this experience.
I do not intend to use the ipod for music but only to photography keeping.
I also own a 20D and I'll shoot RAW and JPG as you did. Only for the sake of having a look at them, while travelling.
Tomorrow I will have the cables and the stuff (Apple camera connector) for the transfer of the photos from the camera to the ipod 60Gb.
I am going to make some experiments during the week end.
I will let you know...:):

Even though it's definitely one of the more spendy PSDs, I have the Epson P-2000 and LOVE it. It's got a great screen (if you're needing to look at your pics), good RAW support, simple interface, reliable backup/verification and reasonable battery usage. I used it this winter on a three week trip in Thailand (mostly rural) and it worked great.
Have a look at the P-2000. (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=355953&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation)

I use my iPod to listen to music and tend to avoid the photo/video capabilities. The screen turns out to be too small for me. Go figure. BUT I *do* use it as an External Firewire Drive as well.
Since you have the iPod, have you thought about using it as a storage/transfer device for your photos? It mounts on your desktop as a iPod icon, but if you double click it, you can see that it acts just a like a hard drive.
60 gig isn't too shabby when it comes to small portable storage. Just trying to throw out an alternate perspective.

Antonio, I use the 40g media gear portable and it works great. I got mine for $120- it held all the trips I took with my 20d in Burma and china(around 3000) with only 12 gig.

The Belkin Adapter would be an okay way to go. I've looked them up on ebay and theyre going for around $20 shipped.

I'm not sure if its compatible with the video Ipod like yours, but these should work with the older models.
Otherwise, you can invest on a really tiny laptop. You'll probably have more uses with that when you're out on a trip anyway. :thumb
But I might try out that Belkin link, for < $20 bucks, heck why not ;)

Apple says the ipod is compatible with the 20D.

Of course, it is true! :):
The camera must be in Comunication PTP !
Later on, I will try with the 350 D and let you know if it works or not.
One thing thought, which is not important, we can not see the RAW files.
So, we must photograph RAW and JPG if photos are to seen on the ipod.

I hate to bump an old thread like this, but this is the only article that covers specifically what I'm wondering about...
Does the iPod Camera Connecter (Apple version) transfer RAW files from the Canon 20D, regardless of whether or not you can see them?
The above responses aren't clear, but the answer seems to be yes.

Whoa whoa whoa... hold on peoples.
Using a program like Ephpod (http://www.ephpod.com/), you can add/edit contacts manually on an iPod (as well as import Outlook contacts like iTunes does). (It's free, btw).
I've used it; it works. Hope is not lost.
