View Full Version : Canon Wireless Shutter Release ?

K - I bought a Nikon E8800 because it came with a wireless shutter release. It's a little remote that is no more than an inch long, with a single button on it, that initiates a timer on the camera. The camera itself has an IR port, and it works great for taking family pictures, where the photography doesn't enjoy running behind the camera a million times. - I would only need to move behind the camera when we switched positions, and then would wirelessly trigger to take 5-10 pictures from my pose.

But I converted. I sold all my nikon stuff including this point and shoot. and now I'm going to another one of these family get togethers where I will be required for the family picture. I own a 5D and a 20D, and was hoping that there was a wireless shutter release for either of these cameras. Recently the cables have been discussed, and wireless flash units are a-plenty, but is there such a device for the Canon DSLR's? It sure was a handy tool on that nikon...

3 Days Later - Well I'm leaving for said Family Event, and I guess I won't have the shutter release I was hoping for, and will have to settle for a 10 second timer. But If anybody has any comments.... - Or is it admitted this is one benifit for Nikon? Come on Canonites!

Well I thought there were no wireless remotes for Canon DSLR's but I was wrong. There are no cost effective wireless remotes for Canon DSLR's. $400 at B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=383781&is=USA&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation). I'm sorry but that is just plain ridiculous.

Good find.

It's not just a simple trigger, tho. It's a device built with professional needs in mind. It can trigger three separate cameras indvidually or together. You can prefocus then wait to actually shoot. It works from 300', which is a long way. It's not a simple remote, it's intended for wildlife photographers who need to set-up remote cameras and then wait for their easily frightened subjects to come into frame. IOW, it's a pretty sophisticated device.

There's a good description here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007WK8LM/002-0892576-1044021?v=glance&n=502394).

I found out something by accident, when trying self portraits ,that may help you. If you set the drive to 2 or 10s timer on my 1DmII and then lock the cable release on (push button and slide forward) is will take a picture every 2 or 10s forever. Not perfect, but it should really help. I'm sure this would work with the 20D or 5D.

I agree that is pricey considering how much the ones for P&S are. It would of been easier to use I think if it had a hot shoe on top of it for a dedicated flash. I'm not a big fan of PC ports.

I'm wondering if one of the electronics experts here could make something similar using using the remote for the drebel and some kind of IR receiver.

I noticed Harry and several Nikon shooters at the Merritt Island Bird shoot were using small wireless remotes with the Nikon DSLRs. I was so jealous.

Canon makes a lovely little wireless remote for their old G5 P&S!!

I am amazed they haven't included one with every 20D, 5D, 1Ds etc. Canon has really have missed the boat here !!

Nikon's tiny wireless remote is the cat's meow!! These are little things that cost next to nothing to include in a digital camera. But they are really nice to have!!

Canon's wireless remote seems like overkill - Fine for a someone using the camera remotely to shoot birds in a nest say, but waaay too large to just use in lieu of a standard remote cable release, which is what I want. I want a wireless that is good for no more than 10 or 15 feet. Wy can't Canon offer us both??

Bob's suggestion of using an IR wireless trigger via a standard electric remote cable release sounds like a great idea to me!!

There is a couple different ones on Ebay. Never used one but for $80 it would be worth a try:

That wireless one in ebay is at least inexpensive. Who is going to be the beta tester?

I could have sworn that there was a wireless remote for a 20D that Canon offered. Maybe I was dreaming?:scratch

It's here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=116234&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
and i guess it's way cheaper that i said :D
but don't know if it works with 20D, it sure does with my Digital Rebel.

This appears to be a different seller but the same device is discussed a lot on dpreview. Most seem to like it. Sometimes it takes an extra effort to get it seated but most seem to find it works. I don't have one but will probably add at some point. Here is just one of the threads there. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=17472496

Thanks so much, everyone!!:):

I think it is unfortunate how expensive even the ebay ones are, but I do think they work. $80 seems steep considering how much the one for the Rebel is.

What you buy for the Rebel is just a device to emitt (sp?) the IR signal the receiver is already built into the camera.

The other models need TWO pieces. One which sends a signal - RF and one that is attached to the cable release socket and receives the RF signal from the piece that you hold and press a button on.

$400 - for the Pro Wireless Controller (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=383781&is=USA&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation)
$80 - for the Wireless Transmitter and Recieiver (http://cgi.ebay.com/WIRELESS-REMOTE-CONTROL-4-CANON-EOS-20D-5D-10D-1D-MkII_W0QQitemZ7600242909QQcategoryZ64345QQssPageNa meZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) from E-bay
$22 - for the Digital Rebel (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=116234&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) Owners

Makes me want to down grade to a Digital Rebel...

Does anybody know why Canon didn't include an IR port in their Canon 20D, 5D, 1 series, etc? It couldn't have been that nobody was using it, because everybody still uses the cable release (which I think is combersome compared to the wireless option) And it couldn't have been because of cost. Perhaps it was a combination of factors. :dunno

Thanks everybody for the input, I'll probably choose the Ebay version since I don't need all the functionality of the Professional version. I'd opt for the Digital rebel quality item if it were available. I thought it was the coolest thing about my Nikon, and I finally found a single regret for switching to Canon. :uhoh

I have the Adidt wireless R3T (100m range) that I got "previously owned". It's the same one on ebay for about $80 - $100. It works as advertised. I took my 20D out in front of our house and I went a couple of houses down the street and I was able to trigger the shutter just fine. I used to have the Adidt wired remote...that one worked just as well. The wireless remote on the XT/Rebel only trigger the timer shutter, and you have to be at the front of the camera since it uses infra-red...not radio signals like the Adidt R3T. The Adidt remotes (wireless and wired) can be used for timer shutter, immediate shutter, and bulb mode shutter.

Because the IR remote only works from infront of the camera with a very limited range (10 feet) or so, making the wired remote as versatile or more versatile than the IR remote

I just recieved the 30 M E-bay version (linked previously)

It works great. Just what I needed. I like the LED's on the back of the unit telling you how charged the reciever is. 5 LIghts each representing 20% of the charge. The remote is easy to use, and it can be used as a cable release or a BULB / Timed release as well. It has a bright Blue LED on the reciever which allows you to know that it recieved the signal, and took (In case you can't hear the shutter, from a distance), and is Radio Frequeny so it doesn't require line of sight.

Sorry - I'm just excited. New Toy Jitters.

How are you attaching it to your body? Does it come with a cold shoe or something?

I've got the 350D and so I can use the RC1 wireless and RS60-E3 wired remotes. (smug for choosing cheapest dslr I could find) I'd actually bought both those remotes years ago for my EOS30 film slr - I love backward compatibility.

I think when I get round to upgrading my camera body, (probably go to a full frame dslr in a few years when prices down a bit) I'd be tempted to make an extension lead for the wired remote. I'm sure those stereo jacks are pretty cheap from electronics shops. Assuming you're using it just to take family shots with you in the frame, the length wouldn't have to be that great.

I bet that would cost less than 80 of your American dollars.
