Saw this article (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1894&e=6&u=/ap/20041005/ap_on_re_us/beach_kudzu) and thought of those great beach shots you take Ginger. Hope this stuff doesn't make it to your islands!

It's so interesting to see, over and over, how man's attempts to control nature are, in the end, futile. Coastal erosion is a natural process, and is ultimately unstoppable. Our desire to arbitrarily stop nature's changes, to keep things as they are, can lead to undesirable consequences.

The best solution to beach erosion is also the most expensive, and slightly ludicrous: truck in massive amounts of sand to rebuild beaches once the storm has passed.

The economic imperative to reconstruct eroded beaches is powerful. Population growth along the US coastline has exploded over the last 20 years. Lots of local governments and businesses have come to rely on the beaches as providers of revenue. So we're likely to see more, not fewer, attempts to control beach erosion in the future.
