The price (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=194450&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) just seems utterly ridiculous. Probably because it works on the 180L lens, they think the can jack up the price. There has to be some other option out there. It makes the Sigma 150/2.8 very attractive since it comes with the hood and collar and has a longer minimum focus distance.

Do you really need a ring with this lens? I have one, it never occurred to me to use one. :dunno

I don't think it's necessary at all.

So it's nicely weighted on a 20D? I'm just looking out for the ballhead on my long-range radar.

As long as you have a decent ballhead, this lens shouldn't be a challenge at all.

I just used the Canon 100mm macro on my 5d using the L-bracket on the 5D yesterday. No problemo.
The only real advantage to the tripod collar is that you can rotate the camera and lens on the lens axis if you decide to switch from portrait mode to landscape mode. That is harder to do in macro mode with an L-bracket.

I have the old model and mount the body on the tripod and hang the 100. There shouldn't be any issues at all doing that with the new one.
