Was wondering if I can place a downloadable pdf or doc file on my website. Wanted to put a "portrait release" and price list that could be downloaded... or am I just stuck with putting up an image file of the information and emailing it to the person after they contact me:dunno ?

Does your ISP provide any free web space with your Internet account? If so, you can store files there and link to them from your smugmug pages.

You can put a pdf on your site. Remember, we'll make -L, -M, -S etc and they'll be jpgs. But the -O will be a pdf. So LINK it, from a gallery description or caption. I hope this helps :D
EDIT: July 2008 - no longer supported, as pdfs would go into SmugVault.

???
That's great!
But i thought you could only upload pictures to smugmug.
What other file-types, besides PDF, can be uploaded to smugmug? HTML pages? ZIP files? Any type of video file?

Anton,
try clicking the link. I was baffeled at first that no PDF-plugin loaded in my browser. That's because it's simply a jpg file which contains pdf-like text for which Andy changed the extension from jpg to pdf. :rofl
I assume you can do this with any picture into whatever extension you do like. The smugmug server sends the pictures like you request them.
As I once found out you can add your own text behind the S, M, L or O of the filename and the link still remains valid.
Sebastian
EDIT: By the way - here's your shrinked ZIP-Version (http://andydemo.smugmug.com/photos/57926236-Th.zip) of Andy's pdf. :D

Thanks... i'll try that out at some point :D
Does every uploader on smugmug allow files to be uploaded that do have non-image type of extensions (e.g. .zip, .pdf, etc.)?

Looks lile I haven't made myself clear. You can't upload any non-image formats (except for mpeg1-videos)! Those links Andy and I created were simple directlinks to images on smugmug. If you've had clicked my faked-zip-file you would have seen it. :D Only the extension is changed, but the content is still an image and regardless of the extension you add the browser always shows it as a typical image - at least IE6 did so for me.
Hope this clears things a bit,
Sebastian

Will you enlighten us then with what uploader you were able to upload this pdf? I tried to upload a pdf of mine containing some text, but the beta and the windows uploader didn't accepted them.
Your 'pdf' opens in IE6 without any pdf-plugin as a simple jpg. Guess IE6 is smart and detects the wrong extension and when I save it I get typical jpg-content in the file that won't open with a pdf-reader. Try it for yourself and open the file with Acrobat Reader. I bet the Mac version of it rejects the file as my Windows version did.
What software did you use to create the file? Have you redownloaded the file using the link you gave us? Maybe it isn't the file you were uploading anymore. Maybe it got converted during the upload process by your uploader.
Confused greetings,
Sebastian

so does this mean it can't be done? :dunno (having smugmug host non-image files)
I have had occasions where I needed to host a file and since smugmug is so great, I don't have my own website anymore...:wink

You can put a pdf but it'll turn into a jpg.

well, I can't think of any use for that "capability"... I guess the answer is no.

Is there an alternative to allow for a pdf to be linked to a site if the way described above is not supported any longer? Any other way to upload into a gallery for client viewing of PDF's? Or does anyone know of a host to "host" my pdf's for links onto a website...much like "Google Pages" did before it, too was eliminated?

Use Google Sites, or even better and smarter, getdropbox.com :D

I am having the hardest time with Google Sites - the "Google Pages" I had were supposed to "migrate" to the new Google Sites. But it just keeps sending me an error saying "Unable to connect at this time - please try again later." Google said this is a problem they are trying to resolve (since last summer????). So maybe I will try getdropbox.com. Thanks for the fast reply!

Use Scribd (pronounced "Scry-bid"), it's free, and you can upload a framed PDF, as in my example.
I have the download option turned off, but you can turn it on.
You get a default embed image size and can change that, widen and lengthen it to what you need.
It can host many other file types, too, but I've only wanted to use PDF.
